From Tom Rock's (Newsday) Blog, August 24: "Don?t expect too much in the way of a regular-season scheme from the Jets on Friday night. Eric Mangini said he won?t use this third preseason game as a dress rehearsal for the starters, as many coaches do. Mostly that is due to the fact that most positions don?t have clear-cut starters. ?It really hasn?t changed,? he said of his philosophy heading into the Giants game. ?To me, whoever the starter is going to be has to just show that that?s the position that they deserve. You?ll see more rotation this week. It will be the same deal, it could be on the offensive line, could be with the quarterbacks or it could be with the defensive backs. It?s just another opportunity against a new opponent to distinguish yourself in a positive or negative way. The guys have been doing that and this is another chance for them to do that.? Guys: Many of you have been complaining of the lack of creativity of our offense in pre-season, but as the above demonstrates, Mangini isn't using the games as a way to showcase the playbook (right or wrong)....
Which is probably the right approach... The fact is going into the season the Titans will have absolutely no idea what to expect from the Jets and it will make it very difficult to game plan for us. Granted this surprise factor won't last very long, but it will definitely help in the beginning.
I agree as well. I noticed it, but I am not surprised and I am actually quite happy with the style of offense we have been using in the preseason so far. We've only thrown a couple of long passes which is fine. The running game has been very basic, despite the rediculous amount of motion going on before every play. And special teams has been playing well in addition to them trying new plays and rotating lots of players. If we already whipped out those trick (unconventional) plays on special teams, I'm sure Mangini and westhoff have plenty more up their sleeve.
Tell yourself whatever you want but the Jets offense is going to be conservative this season, if for no other reason than lack of personnel. Schottenheimer and Mangini can ask Pennington to throw downfield to Coles all he wants but at the end of the day for the Jets offense to run effectively with who they have now they have to lean heavily on the short game and trust Coles, Cotchery, Barlow and others to make plays on the ground.
The only problem I've had with the playcalling this preseason is that god-damn sideline pass to a WR with no blocker... I hate that play. I hope the only reason they keep running it is so that teams prepare for it and then it never happens.
I tend to agree.... the offense in TC isn't all that conservative. Having said that, I think the team would benefit from opening it up some.... let's see if this line can protect the QB long enough for a WR to get downfield. I don't think regular season games are the right time to try untested plays against live competition on the other hand.
I tell myself the same every year, and every year we come out in the regular season and add nothing of note to our repetoire.
what gives me pause about our offense right now is it reminds me of Sean PAyton's offense BEFORE Jim Fassel AND Bill PArcells took away placalling. A lot of meaningless shifting and smoke and mirrors and not much actual daring. The Giants ended up getting too many penalties and they could never get their rhythm going. Sure, he's a head coach now, but that's about five years after he was a hot name. Optimistic me says we're drilling the movement in preseason and in regualr season we'll add the daring.
I remember 2 instances where they broke 4 yards, the rest seemed to be anywhere from 2 yards to a loss of a couple.
I think we should try some things downfield as well....we don't have to open the whole playbook, but some 15+ yard routes couldn't kill us. But its one thing to call a play and another for chad to actually go downfield. I've seen plays with guys running go routes, posts, etc....but chad is king of the checkdown.
The offense hasn't been completely boring. There was a spark or two last week. Gotta give it a chance. I can already tell that we will be better on opening day this year than we were last year. The Jets will be ready, as a team, to play football.
Taken from today's Daily News... Guess we're back to beige on offense again. Kinda makes you wonder if Paul Hackett has been re-incarnated as our new OC but then again, the Jets have never been a sexy offensive team anyway. Hope you all got your coffee pots working this year..
