How has it gotten so bad? Mangold and Ferg are suppose to be in the prime of there careers. Moore was a "pro bowler" last season. You can make all the execuses that it was just preseason but at the end of the day pass protection is the same new offense or not. Our first and second until oline were getting there ass kicked all game. Not to mention we still don't have a tight end on the roster who can block. No clue how Tanny couldn't get that filled with the clusterfuck of Mulligan last season.
The offensive line has gotten bad because all it takes is one bad position to degrade the effectiveness of the line as a whole. The Jets actually have two positions that are below average at LG and RT and that degrades the performance of the whole line because everybody on the line who is not subpar themselves has somebody next to them that they need to cover for.
Let me preface this by saying that i was disgusted by last night. They gave us very little to be excited about. The offense didnt showcase a single play maker & the unit's overall pass protection was terrible. But as the 1st team goes, I didn't think the front 5 was so much the culprit for the offensive setbacks. For the most part they played to the scheme. Brick flinched on a peel block that forced Sanchez to step up..but other than that, front 5 wasn't really to blame. The issue was Tight ends/ running backs picking up the blitz combined with the same problem of last year: No WR's getting open down field. Either way, I'm finding very little positives to take from last night. It was embarassing.
Jets will definitely be bringing in a few OL canidates & even possibly making a few trades by next week. The positives I see: Jets play Giants next week & Jets can upgrade there roster by signing a few Giants cast-offs when there cut.
Moore gave up a pretty bad sack. I didn't get to see who else let them in. Many were straight up the middle, unobstructed. The oline is our biggest weakness on the team by far, although we had some people out / playing 2nd team. Sanchez needs to take less than 2 sacks per game if we are to stand a chance. He had 3 in the first quarter. Maybe part of Slauson's negotiation was to free up money for somebody. We'll see.
Its about time we start looking at the OL Coaches guys....how can this unit be this bad? Theres some pretty good guys up front in the trenches for us. Is it OL coaching or strength and conditioning coaches?
Truth is we can't explain why an OL that was very good in 2010 was complete trash in 2011 with the same players. I'm still searching for answers. Hunter was fine in the 2010 playoffs but was a turnstile in '11.
Dave DeGuglielmo (offensive line) I was at the mini camp in June all this fat little bald guy did was yell expletives at all the guys. Rex needs to carefully examine this immediately.
What else is he supposed to do when they arent doing their job? You cant scheme around incompetence on the OL.
A coach is supposed coach them and school them. I dont think calling them expletives over and over is showing them a damn thing about football or the offensive line schemes. COME ON MAN....We have a a good core there something is wrong.
The difference between 2010 and 2011 was about four cascading problems. 1. At an age when almost all other teams are cutting backup offensive linemen the Jets instead decided to promoted a 30 year old guy to starter. The reason there are not many 30 year old backups in the NFL is that if you're not good enough to start before that age you're not likely to magically gain the ability after it. If you're a 30 year old backup, well that means you've successfully fought off about five guys younger than you over the last year or two, without the tools of a starter to help you out. It's just a very low chance. The Jets should have cut Hunter in the 2011 off-season, instead they made him a starter. 2. Slauson got hurt and was unable to play at an acceptable level after that. 3. D'Brick was stuck covering for Slauson, and like in 2007 when Clarke needed a lot of help D'Brick's play at his own position suffered. 4. Overall depth really hurt them all year long. Nobody to cover for Hunter when he flunked out early. Nobody to cover for Mangold when he went down. Nobody to replace Slauson when he was stuck on the field with a mangled arm. This is just what it is. The Jets thumbed their nose at the need for depth on the OL and they had a below expectations year as a result. The very sad thing about this is that apparently the Jets learned nothing from the debacle last year and this year is probably going to be worse with the main issues being the same issues that plagued them last year.
Slauson isn't hurt though. That eliminates half the list. Agreed that depth and RT are still problems.
The bold is great hindsight. Because Hunter came off a great stretch of games replacing Woody we should have cut him and done what exactly? I doubt many if any were saying cut Hunter after the 2011 season. They actually had depth last year and then Turner went down. Then they made 0 moves. I was fine going into the season with what they had but after Turner went down I think everyone on here was calling for additional OL
Maybe we should keep talking out of our asses......... The quality of your posts are very poor. One position that I really thought we shouldve upgraded that wouldnt have cost that much is a #2 TE. Martellus Bennett wouldve been a solid sign and he didnt get that much money from the Giants. Something is going to have to be done about this quickly because not one of our TE’s can block.
So long as they remain healthy, I have hope that the line should come together. Mangold is among, if not the best Center in the league. Brick is good, sometimes great, sometimes underwhelming. Brandon Moore is solid if not excellent. Slauson is serviceable to good when healthy. And Hunter, well, Hunter is not great at all. But who else has a line with three potential pro bowlers? How many teams are hiding a weakness on their line? Most I think. Sure a player like Damien Woody would bring this line back to the bruiser it was before, but that is also a huge luxary that most teams don't have and in some cases don't need. So how do other teams work around average offensive lines? In some cases, with above average, quick releasing QBs. In others, with a RB that makes his own yards. And still others, with big TEs or multiple TE sets or spread offenses. Where does that leave the Jets? The Jets are going to have to find ways to spread the field and keep defenses honest. That will include rollouts and dump offs to McKnight. Chip and release by Keller. Deep balls to Hill. Perhaps a Tebow wrinkle. Two TE, single WR sets with a FB that attempts to smash the RB through the hole - or from the same set, motion and spread Keller and McKnight out as 2nd and 3rd WRs. Its going to take some craftiness, but hey, thats what offense is. to worry that we are doomed by the line is to ignore the rest of the league. Yeah, its great to have the best line in football, but many other teams operate without that luxary.
McKenzie and Goldberg are both over 30 and suspect. That doesn't mean that either of them couldn't come in and help us out but we're more likely to find out why their old teams let them go.
