Interesting article from Pat Kirwin on having 3 Safeties who can play, with at least 1 being able to play SS/LB hybrid. Might clue us in on why the Jets seemingly have 3 safeties who are probably in the strong safety mold - although I don't see how having 1 of the 3 safeties being more of a coverage FS would make the Big Nickel any less effective. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/...-need-one-to-combat-hybrid-offenses-this-fall
It's a copy-cat league. Always has been always will be. RR is capable of adapting and playing human chess. Belicheat has proven to be an innovator on the offensive side of the ball in addition to the defense.
well, maybe Rex is banking on the development of Wilson..... with that, the JETS having 3 1st rd talents at CB, maybe REX wants safeties more apt to lay the lumber over coverage skills. (which is something he didn't like in Rhodes)
Thanks for the read. Interesting. I really hope the defense can dominate and deliver fear in the other team's offense.
Interesting article. Thanks. First thought, damn, I wish we drafted Iloka. I really like his pedigree as a big safety that had man coverage skills. Had a built in mentor in Wilson who went to the same school and plays in the secondary. Too bad. Second thought, yeah, things are changing. Just the fact that the league has gone pass crazy and we already have three CBs of note on the roster, is a sign to me that Rex is forward thinking. Rex is inovating even before the offenses have fully made the move. So as much as I have my opinions, positive or negative, on the Jets moves, I have to think Rex knows better than me. Third, why does Rex watch offense evolve and not want his offense to participate in the same? Well, he did want the offense to go three WRs at the begining of last year. It just turned out they weren't ready. So as much as I dislike Schotty, I do have to think that Rex was behind some of the push to go pass crazy just like the league allows. Rex knows what is going on, and he can build a defense to defend it, and also wants to push the offense to exploit it. But Sanchez is a step behind, and therefore the next move is to fall back on the ground and pound and wildcat as a complication and difference maker on offense. Edit: Fourth, its also makes me rethink the last two first round draft picks. I had trouble understanding why we went with DEs instead of OLBs. 3-4 DEs are space eaters and shouldn't be so important. But if in fact we are really barely a true 3-4 team anymore, then having an athletic line may become more important. Just the same, when you have to pull LBs off the field and replace them with secondary, maybe Lbs become less important and safeties become more so. I dunno. I'm just looking for a ray of hope.
Makes sense. Jets got thrashed by the run when playing with extra db's last season. But the point here is can your nickel guys cover and play big against the run. The jets safeties can certainly play big against the run but do I have confidence in them covering grok and Hernandez? Not at this point. I do think we have upgraded though. I have more confidence in Landry, bell, Allen, or Davis to cover a tight end than I do Bart Scott, David Harris, or Eric smith. How much better we will find out. One thing for sure is Rex has something brewing and I'm very excited to see what our defense looks like this upcoming season.
Maybin-Coples-Wilkerson-Pace Davis-Landry Revis-Wilson-Smith-Bell-Cro Is something we could see, or would be cool.
You're never gonna out finesse the Patriots. The way to beat the patriots is to be aggressive & physical.
This is an astute point. They can win regular season games but get beat out by the truly physical teams in the playoffs. But on point with the topic of the article, isn't bringing in fast and strong safeties "aggresive and physical" as opposed to finesse?
Man, you Jets fans can be hilarious sometimes. Listen, If the Jets really had this big plan to run a defense predicated around 3 big safeties, you would make it a priority to find and sign those guys. They signed possibly the biggest injury question mark in free agency other than Marcus McNeill with Landry, didn't draft a safety until the 6th round, and waited until the end of May to sign an aging vet. Those minimal moves do not have the look of an offseason plan to stop a dynasty and create an innovative move that defenses in the NFL haven't seen in 10+ years. Just accept the fact that Landry was a risk that Rex "hopes" will pan out, and Bell was a crappy veteran (who was left on the market in May for a reason) to sign as depth to a crappy safety unit. Not everything has to be some amazing, grand master plan.
Is that how we call it these days? That was once called 3-3-5 stack. -_-;; 1 FS, 2 SS who can also play LB, 1 OLB and 2 ILB, one of which can play OLB.
Man, you Jills trolls can be hilarious sometimes. A decade in the basement of the AFCE and you still come on to a Jets message board talking shit. Keep grasping at straws, your joke of a franchise will be on the bottom of the pile once again this season. Enjoy!
Dont get caught up in the fact that I'm a Bills fan that you miss the argument. I'm sorry that it pisses you off that I post something, but it is genuine.
