1st point, same can be said of many jets fans, it's not inherant to one teams fans. 2nd, the jets had a dominant oline when they were contenders, that is not now the case! 3rd, yes they should have passed on coples (too many questions on heart) and taken decastro much more dedicated and sure thing in an area of obvious weakness and need on the team. the jets should have gone oline on 2 of the first 3 picks. guard and tackle.
2009 the JETS were the true Ground-n-pound team leading the league in rushing...... since then Faneca and Woody have been replaced by Slauson and Hunter, and there went the running game. With each piece the slide continued downward. * The problem is the personnel, and why DeCastro was my choice as 1st pick...... * (please do not bring up Thomas Jones, as his KC performance shows why he was replaced by a better back. LT)
its a waste to spend a first round pick on a guard unless you are a team like the steelers that has very few holes. if you look at the top 10 ranked guards for 2011 not one was drafted in the 1st round or even the second round, most were either late round picks or undrafted free agents. 1 Kraig Urbik BUF - 3rd 2 Marshal Yanda BLT - 3rd 3 Carl Nicks NO - 5th 4 Chad Rinehart BUF - 3rd 5 Josh Sitton GB - 4th 6 Brian Waters NE - UDFA 7 T.J. Lang GB - 4th 8 Kris Dielman SD - UDFA 9 Brandon Moore NYJ - UDFA 10 Jon Asamoah KC - 4th
Same agents as Revis - LYING PRICK HEADS!!!!! Could be why ARZ let him go... Just not worth it to have to deal with schmucks like that unless it's for Revis and even that IMO won't be worth it on the next hold out.
Besides being bit by the injury bug and besides the Play calling - Two things most of us agree shit the bed last year.. One thing I recall is a lot of Confusion.... Time outs, getting to the line late, Delay penalties and players just looking completely lost and out of step... This game is so much about Timing and working as a unit. My Hope is that STEP 1 in fixing the mess is having everyone grasp what they are doing and on the same page and eliminate the 1st and 20 holes and needless MENTAL mistakes... THAT ALONE should make a difference....
If it were me, even if I agreed with all I wrote in the OP, I would have signed a bunch of guys at some point and drafted a few later on at least just to get some bodies in and see what we have... Doesn't have to be names like you stated but, how about ANYONE? I remember last year the Ravens signed some guys on the cheap before the season started and I thought - Wow - that could be THE difference between the two teams right there - I think it was Mckinnie and another guy... Pats just gave Gallery a contract... Watch him thrive in NE. Jets?
BUT! Part of the point that I made starting this thread is that the Jets rolled the dice like teams have to do all the time... If Mangold went down and 2 other guys were dinged on the line when Slaw was inserted at LG then Slaw wouldn't have had the support of the best center in the game on his right side and he might be out of the league right now..... people would have KILLED the jets FO for letting go of Faneca!!!!!!! But, the plan worked because the unit stayed healthy and was given a chance to grow and develop.... With limited Offseason and No Center or Guards healthy.... THE WHOLE PLACE BLEW UP!!!! So, it's funny how the FO gets Mad credit or gets KILLED really based on health. So much of this game just comes down to health - Damn, if Kris Jenkins lasted a season this team might have a SB..
The Jets have had issues on the offensive side of the ball for several years now, primarily related to having a young QB, having new people every year and having an overly complicated system in place that it was hard for the new guys to pickup. Their answer to this next season apparently is going to be to switch systems to what should be a less complicated system except that it's going to be a dual system in which all the linemen, runningbacks and the receivers are going to have to learn both roles. When a team changes offensive systems they generally take some time to click at the beginning of the year. This certainly has been true of the Jets recently. Going to the kind of system the Jets will apparently run is likely to magnify that effect. Given the pressure various people are under to perform well out of the gate and the fact that the Jets face strong defenses early I think it is not unreasonable to project a massive ongoing clusterfuck by game 5 or so and a team literally on fire at that point.
But the FO knew Turner was down with an injury in the preseason, their #1 backup and they did nothing to address it. That is the concerning part. They knew their #1 backup who could play many different positions went down and they signed nobody. Health does make the FO look better or worse, but it can't be used as an excuse on why they didn't fill a hole made in the preseason.
This is where I place blame..right here. The Hunter risk was a calculated one..& it made sense at the time. But for whatever reason..when it comes to O-line..the Tanny/Bradway administration just doesn't put alot of value in depth. Now with that said...there aren't alot of quality starting O-linemen out there nevermind linemen capable of being a quality back up who are content playing & being paid as such. The days of being 3 deep at every O-line spot are over. Lack of quality as well as the salary cap have killed that notion. But clearly the Jets did not properly project how big of a loss Turner was. Moving forward...this is all solved by one thing & one thing only. Ducasse EARNS the RT spot. Now that remains to be seen. If he does..Hunter fits in nicely as an experienced back-up swing tackle. Meanwhile the interior has Schlauderoff & RG2. Team is really high on Schaluderoff & until he shows otherwise, we will need to take them at their word. The question is..what happens if Ducasse doesn't develop any further? Well then things get really interesting both via the starting 5 & with the depth chart
Hunter doesn't fit as a backup/swing tackle at this point. Look around the NFL at who plays those roles and you will find young cheap players. Hunter is an old expensive player. He's clearly not better than a cheap young 4th or 5th rounder who is being developed to take over a spot in a year or two. The problem is the Jets never spend 4th and 5th round picks on offensive linemen so Hunter becomes the next best thing, although he's not good enough to play in the NFL at this point.
There is no basis in fact to make this prediction. Why would Giant fans complain about their FO? Their FO has done very well by their team, beyond question. The Jet FO? Not so much. Instead of accepting that simple explanation, the simplest explanation usually being the correct one, are we to look farther afield as to why Jet fans would be critical even with the level of success the Giants have had? Like, Jet fans are by their nature (and why would THAT be?) more critical than Giant fans? Methinks Jet history is the better explanation.
Ftr the problem was not limited to letting Kendall go. The problem was, having let him go, THEY HAD NO REAL PLAN TO REPLACE HIM. See the distinction?
DING DING DING!!! WE HAVE A WINNER! THIS was the real problem with the FO's performance last year. And the reasons for it, which in part was they were already protecting an OL roster spot for the excrement pile that is VD, but beyond that seemed to be counting on the starters to not get hurt. Well, Mangold got hurt, and that pretty much blew up the season. If Turner had been available, yeah it would have been a drop off from Mangold, but not like what actually occurred. THis goes back to what Brad and others complain about - the trading up in the draft has left the roster too thin because mid level draft picks went to other teams. It all ties together. Jet FO Homers can't see it or chose not to. But it's there.
Sparano won't be in charge of the OL in NY either unless the Jets are going without an OL coach. The OC is the guy who designs the plays, selects which plays to use against the next opponent so that the team can practice them, and then usually calls the offensive plays during games. Sparano will probably design the blocking schemes, but he's NOT likely to be working with the OL directly. I also think you are putting way too much faith in a guy who has had no real experience as a coordinator to somehow be an offensive genius. Tony Romo did NOT "thrive" in any offense Tony Sparano created. All Sparano did in Dallas was coach the OL and call plays for a handful of games.
Really? Hunter can't be a back-up swing tackle? Funny cause that worked just fine for the Jets in 2009 & 2010 including the fact that Woody had alot of nagging injury issues & missed a handful of plays almost every game. You are aware that there are more than one ways to skin a cat, right? Why are you always so concerned with how other teams do things? Other teams aren't the Jets. Other teams could use a center like Nick Mangold & a Left tackle like Brick... As for using picks on developmental linemen: What was Ducasse? RGII? Schlauderoff(GB 6th rounder who Jets traded 6th rounder for)? Now you'll say that the Jets chose the wrong guys. Well therein lies the problem w/ OL depth throughout the NFL. Once you get past round 3 or 4...these Ol prospects are merely crapshoots. Nothing more. Furthermore, how can you develop a high ceiling guy & account for future depth when players like Ducasse get labeled a bust day 1 of training camp forcing the front office to move in another direction?
