DMW I understand what you are saying and to me it would fly if we did not watch Duchasse and more importantly Hunter struggle last year,,,but we did. Sanchez had enough of his own problems without these 2 clowns being inserted into the lineup! I honestly believe that they believe the team under performed last year and that it is loaded with talent,,,,I truly believe this . I also do not want to hear about how they have guys on the practice squad ready to step in because I think that is also a line of BS,,,,,,there was a guy named Matt Mchesney that was on our PS and they talked him up a storm , he was voted the world league best off lineman or some other award that escapes me now,,,,long story short he did not even make the roster that year ! I used to follow Tanny blindly,,,,no more ,,,,not after last year,,,it is time to Shut up and put up it is yr 4 and yr 3 was beyond embarrassing
Deep down inside the media know that they are the winners because we have Tebow, someone that will bring them useless headlines for years to come. It's funny how everyone attacks the Jets constantly after one mediocre season.
I think our offseason was good. What more did people want we adressed alot of problems that we had. What were people looking for bring in Mario Williams, along with a number 1 WR and a new RT, its just not possible.
Jets added the best back up QB in the NFL. Jets added the best Wildcat QB in the NFL. The Jets just improved their running game. The Jets added a Strong Safety and re-signed their own players that they needed. They now go into a draft where they have 10 picks followed by a FA period where teams in cap trouble will be cutting some decent players that the Jets can pick up cheap. Depending on the Draft and second round of FA the Jets could very well wind up being one of the off-season winners. After that all one can hope is it translates into winning during the season lol.
i never said the jets were losers in FA, they just had opportunities and didn't do enough. eric winston 4 yrs $22 million deal was a steal, jets could have easily afforded that, gaither is the other tackle that was available. i don't know where you're coming from as far as the jets added depth landry maybe, schilens is a scrub and then there's nothing. jets could have done better but i suspect players don't want to come here after the cluster F**k end of season display!
I don't know what you are talking about, a bad off season! Tanny and Woody MUST know what they are doing! They are in charge, after all!
If you view the Jets as a very good team that could compete for the SB by not doing much in the offseason and adding depth in the draft and FA we are fine. If you see a team that looked like it peeked and is in decline by the way we collapsed down the stretch last year than what we did this offseason is probably not going to change that.
1. Eric Winston says hi. ($22m/4 years ~= $5.5M/yr, hardly breaking a bank, even for Jets' constrained situation.) 2. Makes even more sense to see the wisdom in keeping WFH - if he was cut in time, Jets could get Winston AND get a backup RT. 3. So are you telling me Tannenbaum did a masterful job here? Are you sure? He didn't even bother calling up Winston's agent. Now what happened to that "Leave no stone un-turned" philosophy?
Holmes is the only over rated receiver on the team. Mark was under duress because the OLine - that's right - the whole OLine , not just Hunter - had a down year. Moore was the only one who had an outstanding year. DBrick played Sub-par. Mangold's injury (which would have been covered by Turner had he not been injured the 3rd preseason game - which leads me to ask - who thafuck was available then?) Slaw was injured during a play covering for poor play by Brick. Hunter = obvious. Mario Williams? Brandon Marshall? VJax? Eric Winston wanted to be a starter and its obvious the CS is not giving up on Hunter just yet, especially with Ducass in the wings. How about we see what the draft brings and THEN wait to see if they sign anyone else. They may pick up a PR, an OLB, and then a tackle and no worthwhile WRs may be available and they be shopping for Braylon Edwards. Alot can happen...
What? Hunter is making 2.5M this year. How does cutting him and signing Winston at 5.5M help us to get a backup RT? Winston was probably the next worst RT in the AFC after Hunter in 2011. He's a name. His sacks allowed and penalties were both high. He was cut for a reason.
I agree with your assessment of the FO's take on Hunter and VD. The problem I have is what is their assessment based on? On field performance? It's hard to make that case, isn't it? Hunter was imo clearly the worst starter on the team last year, and not worth what he is getting paid now. VD couldn't play himself into getting more time? It's not like he was sitting behind a Pro Bowler. But there clearly does seem to be a commitment to this tandem. Why? My theory is they don't want to admit they made a mistake on both counts, and are avoiding not only admitting that, but also starting to deal with the need to clean up the mess. As a result the mess continues for another year.
I didn't say you said the Jets were losers in FA - thats the point of this thread - that there was an article which painted the Jets as being one of the losers in FA, which I feel is ridiculous. Eric Winston was cut by the Texans for a reason and Gaither is a major health risk with his back issues and in any event he re-signed with his old team, so was never really in play. We lost not a single player of note and brought in potentially a top safety, WR depth with Schilens, brought in Jay Richardson and Dengelo Smith and got who knows what with Tebow. The worst thing you could say about our offseason (which is not over yet) is that we havent been very aggressive (probably not a bad thing) or that we havent hugely improved the team (as yet). How someone takes that and turns it into "the Jets are losers in FA" I have no idea.
By not being aggressive I mean we have not mortgaged our future by signing a high profile FA to a back loaded contract nor have we given up a top draft pick as part of a high profile trade. Giving up a 1st rounder for a Mike Wallace is an aggressive move in FA, trading a 4th rd pick for a back-up QB is not.
the team desperately needs quality oline and quality backup oline for the ground and pound to flourish. the jets have not done enough in this area to date, when there were players available!
I'm not sure how anyone could think we did anything other than lose this offseason. We didn't get noticably worse, but we certainly didn't get better. The Tebow signing was just Woody getting a woody at the marketing $$$ when Tebow became available. The only area we improved was at the OC position. Our WR core is a joke, our OL depth is as deep as Jersey Shore, and our best pass rusher is known as one of the biggest busts in Buffalo history. These are areas that really needed some FA help, and they received none at all. Our locker room seems even more divided than before, if that's possible. Winning will take care of that, but are we in a position to win more games? Only the relative softness of the schedule is any sort of indicator that we can. Many of you veteran posters know me as a hard core sunshiner, but I am also a realist, and I just don't see how we have addressed any real issues at this point. Add in Tanny's recent draft history, and it looks even worse. Go ahead and jump me for these thoughts if you want, but I see another season of mediocrity and underachieving headed down the tracks. Fact is, Tanny has put together a team that doesn't mesh and is undertalented, and has settled for making headlines the Washington Redskins way as opposed to the New England Patriots way.
We could sign Barron and package some of our 9 remaining picks and/or a player to move up in the 2nd round where there will be some quality pass rushers. We could reverse that if Barron doesn't fall and take Upshaw at 16 and a safety high in the 2nd. This class is relatively deep for 2nd tier prospects at those positions. Load up on receivers and oline for the rest of the draft and UDFA and see what pans out in camp. Particularly due to the new rookie pay scale, this is how competitive teams will be built from here on out.
