This year I don't care about the big name signings. I don't care about catching the ‘big fish’ in free agency. It just doesn’t seem like it’s worked out well for us in the past. The player doesn’t have to be high profile, as long as they fit the system. I’m all for building through the draft and keeping the guys we have, while letting the waste go.
Cynical Jet fans are cynical. It is a win/win situation as far as I can tell. Props to Tanny and D'brick now hopefully we can fit more pieces into this puzzle and win.
Cynical? I don't know how you got cynical from that. Yeah, I'm happy he did it, but to make him out like a huge team player (like he's losing money) is incorrect.
Read on nyjetscap twitter feed that 10 million more can be created with Sanchez, Holmes, and Cromartie, restructures.
Completely dismissing it as self motivated only instead of seeing it as a possible mutually beneficial solution and the "what a guy!" comment came off as cynical. I'm not looking for an argument just pointing out an observation if I misread it I apologize.
Love the thread headline, well done. Agreed. Overall he's done a good job as GM, even a good chef drops a couple of eggs on the floor.
He's not being cynical, he's right. Let's not pretend that Brick is taking some kind of hit for the team. He just cashed in on some money that he wouldn't have seen for years, if ever. I don't blame him but he's not sacrificing anything for the team. He's benefiting from the cap situation. The homer take - Brick is a total team player. The realistic take - Brick is a smart businessman.
Where did I completely dismiss it as only self motivated? And even if I did do that, if he had to give up money do you think he would have? Obviously not.
The only guy we have to give props to is Woody Johnson for his willingness to shell out 9 mill dollars straight away. He doesn't get enough credit.
If it helps the Jets and the cap why is it a problem if it helps Brick too? Props to Tannenbaum for either structuring the contract or just understanding the rules well enough to create a win-win situation. And of course Woody for letting him do it and paying the money.
Where did I say it was a problem? Just doesn't warrant that whole 'What a team player' sentiment when the player benefits as much if not more than the team. Perspective. Edit: I'm a huge Curtis Martin fan, but the team did the same thing with him for years to try to dig themselves out of the hole that Parcells put them in, and every time Curtis restructured, fans moved him up the ladder of sainthood for it. He was taking guaranteed money and the team was able to put off the eventual crushing cap hit until after Vinny was off the books. He was a team player for many reasons, I just don't see that as a striking example of why.
I understand, again to me it's a good situation for everyone. They set the contract up that way, Brick, like Martin, is a guy you don't mind getting his money because they're out there every game earning it. So in a sense Brick should be lauded for being one of those guys.
Another contract that could be restructured I believe is Sanchez... I just hope Tanny doesn't go all in for one guy like he did with Nmamdi. If the player was Mario Williams I wouldn't care because he fills a hole when Nmamdi wouldn't.
I don't think just living up to your contract is something that should be lauded. They are getting paid gaudy amounts of money to do this. That should be expected, not lauded. And Brick did not exactly have a career year in 2011. I still like him as a player, but he just cashed in big-time coming off a down year. That doesn't really deserve the hero treatment.
Great move from what I understand. As many said above thought, I really hope we dont plan on chasing one of the biggest fish in FA, I want a few players at positions of need. If we can get two quality staters from FA, maybe 3, then we will be looking very good heading towards the draft. I think a safety is a must sign in FA, #2 WR (Braylon) and maybe a RT like Gaither if we have the money. I know its hopeful, but these signings would be a lot more beneficial than one big fish. And I really dont want us to devote all of our time, money and effort on that one big fish, to only see it get away while every other FA is gone...
Either way it is good for the team and that is all I care about. Every year we hear how bad the cap situation is going to be and every year there seems to be a solution, Tanny deserves credit for that. Now lets hope he uses that money wisely.
$9m was his base salary for 2012 only. It's all money that was already guaranteed for skill. EDIT: Actually, his base salary was a hair shy of $10m, so presumably he's left with the vet minimum for his age and experience.
I'd have thought David Harris' base $9m would be a target, but can't happen till a year after he got the deal.
