Agreed. Now is not the time to start him, especially with a spotty (for now) O-Line and a non existent running game.
He looked solid, although he did let the ball fly and tried to float it a couple times, once almost resulting in a pick if the Buccs second team could catch the ball.
Kellen Clemens I was very satisfied with his performance last night...but i just dont think hes ready yet. I think he should be the 3rd QB and maybe thrown in there for garbage minutes. He made some good throws, but none against the first team defense. However, he did have 4/5 of the starting OL. The one play that stands out to me and shows me he isnt ready, was his completion to Reggie Newhouse. I believe it was in the drive at the end of the first half that he managed very well, so props to him for that. However, it was a very poor decision by him. Newhouse ran a sideline pattern, and was in tight coverage. The BACKUP CB on the Bucs watched Clemens eyes the whole way and was able to jump the route. He didnt intercept the ball, but should have and it went right through his hands. Newhouse caught the ball and ran for about 25 yards. Meanwhile, Cotchery was streaking down the right sideline wide open (I know this because of TIVO). Clemmons was stuck on one target the whole time and wasnt really reading the defence. It worked out more than fine, but in the heat of the regular season against a solid starting CB, instead of a 30 yard completion, its 6 points going the other way. I think Clemmons will be a star one day in this league but he is just not ready right now.
Yea, and if I was 1 1/2 - 2 inches longer I'd be in Hollywood. Until a decision is made by Mangini, all else is purely a guessing game. Why does Bollinger have to be bad in order for Clemens to be good? I think they are very similar in height, movement, and passing skills. Clemens is not head and shoulders above any of the QBs' on the Jets or in the league, that's your fairy tale. Who said he'd be #1 in the draft with another inch or two? The Brothers Grimm?
Ron Jaworski said he thought Clemens was the best QB in the draft WITHOUT an extra inch or two of height.
The broken leg and incomplete season had more to do with that imo. Some of us liked Cutler more than Matt and Vince to begin with. Clem did well, and I'm looking forward to seeing a lot more of him later in the season.
that's one play.... ...it's also nice that you can see the entire field with your TIVO. It's a different story when big, bad & hungry D-lineman are breathing down your neck. No QB sees the entire field for an entire play.
You got a lot to learn if you plan on thinking like that. Cause first of all you should always care about any player who gets hurt. "Rooting for Chad"? "Could care less"? A little confued there... Second of all Clemens has done jack. And also has done jack to show he can be a leader and a starter. He had a couple of nice throws but that's it. You sure as hell can't tell if a rookie QB is going to suceed in the NFL from one Preseason game. Think back to Rick Mirer. That is if you were old enough to watch him. Oh boy. Here come the bandwagon Clemens threads.
Clemens looked really good... I was especially impressed with his ability to run the 2 minute drill effectively... we should have had a TD there, had Cotch made the endzone grab... this was only his second series in his first "NFL" action, and I don't care if it was against second teamers - it was still a 2 minute drill... The one bad pass wasn't DROPPED by the defender - it was almost batted down - no way that guy could have caught the ball - maybe an A-teamer would have been in better position and snatched it, but on that play there was absolutely no danger of an int... That being said - it is only Kellen's first pre-season game... he will definitely have some growing pains, although I did like what I saw a lot... As far as Chad goes, he looked decent - he made all the 5 yard throws that people will expect from him during the regular season if he's the starter... With no running game to speak of, and no deep threat thanks to Chad's lack of arm strength, opposing defenses are gonna stack the box and cheat up like crazy on us... I really don't see the point of letting Chad start a single game this year - I don't care "how hard a worker" he is, etc... If I was making NFL money you can be damn certain I'd be a hard worker too - does that and one good season in the past mean I should be the starter? That didn't mean much for Kurt Warner when Eli Manning was inserted... I say we suffer through the growing pains with Clemens right from the begining - if he shows enough promise by year's end, then we get a top-flight running back in the draft... If not, Brady Quinn... I don't think anyone can possibly say that Chad Pennington is the future of the team at this point, so why waste reps on him? Our offense is in such a shambles that it probably doesn't matter who's at QB anyway -put Peyton Manning back there and we have absolutely no shot of making the playoffs... so... lets build toward the future... out with the old and in with the new...
I could possibly see him taking over at some point in the year, i.e. Eli over Warner, but it's not likely at all. Maybe next year that will be the case, but he is a rookie still.
Clemens was playing against the 2nd and 3rd string defense. With little of the Jets offense in place yet. And little of the TB defense being displayed. To try to say anything other than Clemens looked good for a rookie is crazy IMO. Saying he should start any time soon is just as crazy, it could even hurt his confidence. Chad has been around awhile and gives the team the best chance to win right now. Let Clemens develope and stop thinking he is some wonder kid. He looks like a good player that needs time to learn. Chad looked good to me and he was playing against the TB 1st string and had no running game to help. Again once the entire offense is installed we will have a better idea of how things look for the future.
I never said Clemens was any type of wonderkid... He played well for his first preseason game... and looked better than Chad... I dont understand however, how people say that Chad is our best chance to win now... How is this? We have basically no running game at the moment, and Chad clearly can't make the throws required in 80% of any NFL playbook... run heavy offense w/ no running back and QB who can't make deep throws (or even feed the slot on a 12 yard slant for that matter) does NOT = best chance to win now... Am I missing something?
exactly great post. Maybe the Chad of old gives us the best chance to win, but the fact is his rebuilt shoulder can't make a lot of throws anymore. Sure hes a good guy and a good leader, but they doesnt mean he gives us the best chance to win anymore. Everyone is just going to stack the line and force him to try and throw deep outs to beat them, something that was his weakness before, now its even worse. Personally I'd rather have a player out there that can at least keep defenses a little off guard once in awhile in fear of the deep ball.
