You might be confusing belated with elated. Good news though. Off year this year but confident our special teams will bounce back.
Either she has terrible grammar, or used the wrong word. No one would say "I'm a bit belated" You might say: "Not sure if this tweet is belated, but Jets ST coach Mike Westhoff will be back in 2012. Team expects him to retire after '12 season."
Seriously. Maybe we were spoiled with great special teams but last year was terrible. That sinking feeling that there was a good chance that something was about to go wrong, in every aspect of special teams.

I thought he was retiring this year...maybe he would have if the special teams hadn't been god-awful, I'm sure he didn't want to leave on that note and with what happened to the Jets in general.

I think THIS is the reason he's coming back at least one more year. If the Jets get back to the Playoffs and get as far as the AFCCG(hopefully they'll break through this time), then I can see him hanging them up on a brilliant coaching career.
I don't think this is really news. He said at the beginning of this season they next year would be his last.
