The one guy who is tearing up is Kellen Clemens...he finally got to breathe and show something(Albeit not very good) and then Schotty comes back in town. There goes the neighborhood, Clemens is screwed LOL. I'd love to see how someone defends Schotty considering he was a Schotty/Mangini pick. That was suppose to be "Schotty's guy".
I really wouldn't call it a, "system." It's more of a, "cluster fuck." Entertaining at times, yes. But for the most part it's just a headache. have fun!
@ longtimeJetsfan I can't see links yet, I need 10 post lol. I imagine I'll get there. I'll revisit your post haha. Thanks though. @ bakermaker Bwhahahaha! Good point about Clemens though. It didn't even slip my mind. Having him around in camp will be good for Sam considering he knows the offense. Hell, who know knows with this team. We could have a QB controversy.
Rams Fan, Schott was very good at his job in 06, 09 and 10. I think this year he strayed away from what worked for us (run first, play-action passing) and tried more of a spread offense.
Yes along with a 1st time GM and 1st time coach. All 3 of the guys had a say, especially Schotty considering he has the offense at his hands. Mangini did not interfere with Schotty's offense, which was one of his downfalls as head coach. I won't get too hard on Clemens in 07 since that O-Line was god awful but they brought in Favre over letting Clemens start in 08 and likewise drafted Sanchez in 09, basically shunning the Clemens pick.
How much responsibility is put on the QB in his system (er clusterfuck haha)? Line calls etc. How complex or hard would you consider it to be for quarterbacks (or other pos for that matter)?
He simplifies his system(I.E. Green/Red signals on playcalling in 09 for Sanchez) but then babies his QBs with conservative playcalling and gadget plays that never work(Unless you can have Brad Smith) Its a pretty simple offense, which is both good and bad. Its suppose to be QB friendly but very rarely does he fool opposing defenses because of the same plays. Schotty has been helped with a tremendous running game and excellent O-Line play in 2008/2009/2010 so if something ever happens to S-Jax, then uh oh. He's going to feed S-Jax until he can't no more and there will be games where he relies heavily on Bradford at QB and doesn't lose faith in him throwing over 40x.
I doubt very much that he made that pick, all the coaches, scouts, etc... will offer their input but to say he made that pick is silly. Anything else you want to blame him for?
Coaches and OCs do want to draft "their guy" in the 1st year, I do hope you know that. Mangini and Schotty never cared for Pennington but rode him in 06 due to Clemens not being ready obviously. 06 Jets took care of a baby schedule and got blasted in the wildcard round by NE.
Well, we had the luxery of Nick Mangold to make the line calls. Sanchez was left without that duty last I knew. Shotty started in NY with a very, very complex system that had multiple pre snap shifts. Favre asked him to ditch that stuff and he did. He continued to run the simplified version of his offense with Sanchez. Brian is capable of designing very complex things that can work, but I think at times he outwits his own players as much as the opposing defense. I think part of the problem he had here in NY was that he coached to his system instead of trying to build a system around those players he had. This past year he really failed to stretch the feild which left defenses with 8 in the box and jumping the shallow routes all too often. This could be due to a lack of protection as much as having a true deep threat. Our line was awful at giving up pressure off the edge. I also have an issue with his play calling. Too often sticking to some plan instead of attacking waht seems to be the weak points of a defense. The Fresh start may do him some good and I didn't see him as a great fit for the style of team Rex wants. Brian wants to run a more classic west coast offense were as Rex wants power running and playaction. Good luck to him and your team, as long as your not playing the jets.
I have no problem with relying on the run and PA. Especially when you're the Rams. When you're a team that is this bad/young you need to focus on utilizing your teams strengths, instead of trying to exploit the opposing teams weaknesses (to an extent). As in... "Hey, McDaniels. We aren't the 2007 Patriots. We are the fucking Rams. Stop trying to spread out the Seahawks with 5 wide 17 step drops when you have revolving doors on the line. Maybe try using your best player and/or Pro Bowl running back." One of Rams Fan many rants during the shit storm we called a season last year.
The Schotty dilemma is not so cut and dried as some here will make it out to be. His time had run his course here so it was best to part ways on both sides. It was a mixed bag of Sanchez and Schotty sucking just enough to have the offense sputter time and time again. The combination of both of their inconisistencies is the true story here. My biggest gripes with him is that he can't seem to stick with something that works to force the the opponent to make an adjustment so he lets the D off the hook. He also consistently fails to exploit the matchup advantages he is given. He also can become too fixated on trying to "trick" or fool a defense instead of attacking it. It rarely works because much of the Jets offensive personel are too one dimensional in their talents (Greene, no hands), LT (only good out of the backfield at this stage of his career), Keller (below average blocker), Plax (only good in the red zone), Mulligan (no threat in the passing game). You will see it next time he splits his the fullback who has no hands out in the slot and motions him into the backfield.
I thought Brians system was a Coryell system? Good luck to you guys too. We do have a home game against ya though. Should be fun to see what has developed to the lead up of that game.
Yep but they aren't giving a 1st year OC any pull at all. You want to say mangini made the call? I can buy that but to blame Schottenheimer is asinine. We had a "baby" sched in '08 w/ a HOfer- how did that work out? we didn't get blasted by NE, that was a one score game utnil about 5 mins left before NE pulled away.
If I were to define his system, I'd call it a WCO with Coryell elements to it. Kind of a hybrid. I hate it, mainly because it shows potential but the way he designs drives is self-defeating. Sanchez would be getting into a rhythm and then he'd be lined up as a wideout for the stupid formations with a non-QB in the Shotgun (I refuse to call it the Wildcat) and it would totally kill the flow of the drive. Schotty outsmarts himself.
