Simple question- Would a truly great QB like Brees, Brady succeed to expectations in Schotty's System and EVERYTHING (receivers, TE, Oline and Play selection) else exactly the same as this year? My Vote is - No Edit - I tried to include a yes/no poll but did not seem to work.
Schottenheimer needs to GO period talks ground and pound all week -- goes with it for a few plays followed by the usual end around drive destroying trickery talks ground and pound all week -- calls for his quarterback to throw the ball 59 times hopefully, he gets his walking papers after this season and the Jets bring hire Norv Turner, if available, or Brian Daboll, available OR promote Callahan to OC and MOVE ON from the error of allowing Martyball to continue retarding the progress of Sanchez and the entire offense ANY LONGER
I think a guy like Peyton Manning, who for all intents and purposes, is an offensive coordinator in QB's body, could make the offense work to the best of its ability. It wouldn't be a great offense if you consider the weapons, but it would be better than what we have now, so long as he gets to run his own offense. If he's shackled by Schotty, then it's a different story. Bad plays are bad plays, no matter the QB back there. What separates Manning from the rest of the pack is his ability to break down a defense by altering the play on-the-fly. If he can do that, then this offense would be better, but not great, though.
Three different quarterbacks with varying degrees of experience and ability have played for the Jets in this system. Chad Pennington was healthy for one season under Schotty and threw 17 touchdowns with 9 wins. His completion percentage was high but he only threw for 3,352 yards. He also had 16 interceptions that season (very telling) Brett Favre threw 22 touchdowns and 22 interceptions as well as 3,472 yards. Though he was injured the numbers would be better but not earth shattering by any measurement. he won 9 games that season. Sanchez now has them both beat this season in touchdowns and as of now lower interceptions with similar yardage. And he has played below mediocre much of the season. With a win next week, he reaches 9 wins for a third straight season. All three had better than average running games behind them, Chad and Brett went on to have career years the season AFTER leaving Schottenheimer's system. To answer the OP question, there is no doubt in my mind that the system is mostly to blame and that other quarterbacks will not put up huge numbers playing in it.
Are we asking if Peyton or Brees would perform exactly how they typically do or are we asking if they would perform better than Sanchez? Two different questions. If Brees had our WRs and Oline and play-calls versus what he has now, he would certainly not perform as well as he does in N.O. But he would perform miles better than Sanchez does with our WRs, Oline etc. Same for any Peyton, Rodgers etc.
The original question was "succeed to expectations" meaning the expectation of what most Jets fans expect out of their starting QB. Obviously Brees, Rodgers etc. would not put up the #'s they do on their respective teams but would Jets fans be happy with the season they would have under everything else being constant. I say no becuase I feel it is impossible to realy succeed and look good as a QB in this shit and we would be claiming that they are not the franchise qb we thought we had.
When did Schotty Jr actually develop a system? One week its the ground-and-pound, the next its air-it-out. For what it is worth, would a Brees, Peyton (healthy), Brady, or Rodgers succeed if they were switched with Sanchez? Well, not as well as they would with their current teams. Better than Sanchez has? Probably. That being said, it is not really a fair criticism to say that Sanchez didn't do as well as one of the four best QBs in the league would have. If we have one of those four QBs, do we go to the playoffs this year? Perhaps its enough to eek out another win or so and make it. Enough to win the division? No. Enough to get this team to the Super Bowl? No.
