Westhoff is the greatest special teams coach in Jets history and quite possibly NFL history. But this year, the unit has been frustrating to watch with the numerous fumbles in key situations. Fumbles that have cost us games (Oakland, New England and Denver come to mind). It sounds like Jimmy Leonhard will be returning punts for us going forward which is a start in the right direction.

I'm still concerned about the Kickoff Returns though. How injured is McKnight? Cromartie is unreliable - and I think that pooch kickoff that Baker returned was done on purpose because Cromartie has muffed a few of those. Is there anyone else other than Cromartie we can put back there if McKnight can't play?

Id file this in the PURE SHIT column.

What an insightful response, not even answering the question even though you have some kind of grand knowledge.

OP: They had Cromatie in there because we needed a big return, something they have been doing since it worked vs. the colts in the playoffs, so I guess they still trust him back there.

If not him maybe Kerley or Wilson will spend some time back there? Or a Touchback specialist maybe haha.

Special teams has certainly been a disappointing area of the team this year. Folk follows up an awesome kick with a miss on a much easier attempt, and he's been the most consistent part of special teams. The decision making on some of the plays is also questionable, and those here who thought that McKnight might make the Pro Bowl as a returner can forget about that one. And how about MacIntyre running into the kicker? They were lucky that was not called for the personal foul it certainly was.

If you want to add to the list of no shit items that don't tie to one individual player how about time management. We have to be the worst time management team in the league. Every game we seem to have issues. Yesterday, in a close game that could of easily come down to the last possesion, we use two timeouts on a single drive way too early in the fourth quarter.

How does this not get fixed. Total lack of awareness shown on this issue time and again.

Yes Jim should be the only person back there to return punts. It seems like every time some one other than him is in there returning bad things happen. JL is smart and knows when to signal fair catch and when he has time to make a return on the ball.

I am thrilled to see leonhard back there, nopt only does he catch everything but he usually tgets us good returns. No, he won't hit the HR but he will have 10-15-20 yd returns on a somewhat consistent basis and most importantly he catches everything.

If McKnight is out my guess would be kerley would get a shot returning kicks.

I can't stand to see TOs wasted in the 2nd half, I am sick of seeing that happen every week.

Jets lead the league in every statistical category in ST, but also turnovers in the negative column. So its the poor catching that ruins us. I still believe it cost us the Oakland and Denver games.

The Jets are not the worst time management team unless you are referring to 2005 Herm Edwards and Time Management "guru" Dick Curl...

Yeah, this has been resolved. Leonhard will run back all punts and Cromartie all KOs. Cromartie had a bad fumble too but that was on a punt.

Cromartie also had a fumble on a KR, it was a killer at Oakland in week 3.

Cro has his eyes on the big play every time and he looks down field before the ball is secure. His intentions are all well but at this point, who do put to return kickoffs? Personally I'd say Kerley since returning punts is much more difficult than a kick off. I like Kerley's change in direction and speed.

Yeah the continuation of ST fumbles has been a huge disappointment. Every game I'm thinking "This has got to be the last time this happens" and it's been what, four games in a row with one now?

It's such a silly mistake that almost assuredly leads to points for the other team, it's got to stop.

Remember when they stuck Holmes on a couple punt returns last year? Wonder if they might consider that again

    J. Leonhard should be doing this for the rest of the season.

Its not like we ever break one back the other way so I'd rather just have the peace of mind that we'll at least get the ball.

I can't put this on Westhoff, what can he really do to make these guys catch better?

I'd expect Kerley on kickoffs if McKnight can't go. On punts from now on I will be shocked if Jim Leonhard isn't back there short of an injury.

    Leonhard for lifeeee

And on kicks when teams start kicking short I dont get why we havent moved up 10 yards and just taken a touchback if they kick it deep
