Zach -- that's alot of needs you want filled-- your basically asking them to turn over half the team in one off-season -- 3 Offensive linemen, two pass rushing OLBs, two top tier safeties, and a new tight end, all the while retaining their top receiver combo (resigning Plax). Although those would all be great to have, that's alot to ask for from the draft and free agency. Unlikely to almost impossible to make that kind of turn over on the roster and have it be high-end talent. A good blocking tight-end should not cost too much, so I would add that as well -- those are a dime a dozen in my opinion. Focusing on the OL, and then deciding if you're going to go after either the OLB or safety position is probably required -- doubt you could upgrade both those positions realistically.

Re the OP and your point about the front seven:

I think the DL rotation is at least average. I think Pouha is having a good year, De Vito was hurt but seems healthy again and is a good run stopper, and Wilkerson is a starting rookie with upside potential. I thought he was not good at sealing the edge on several earlier games, but he has not looked bad more recently. Dixon and Pitouita are good, too. Well, Dixon can be mediocre I suppose...

And among the LB's you can look at them individually and see much to admire. Scott and Pace are good players. Harris is viewed by many here as the second best player on D after Revis.

But as a group the LB's seem to lack speed. They match up poorly against top TE's.

And now with Thomas out it looks like they are asking Pace to play the run more than rush the passer. So, who is rushing the passer? And don't say Maybin, since he's not been a consistent presence.

Bottom line is I don't expect many DL changes going into next year, but I will be very surprised if the starting LB's are the same.

Are you the same avrus from r/nfl?
I don't hate the idea of having someone to push/compete with Sanchez, but there's no way we can waste a 2nd or 3rd on a QB. We have too many areas of need to use a pick like that to play head games with Mark. If anything, they'll use McElroy or a journeyman FA.

You got it pontiac. Hopefully I haven't run my mouth too much there, but I've done most of my NFL discussions on reddit instead of over here.

I agree, if we're going to spend it on a 2nd or 3rd let's get our O-line back up to strength. We can't have the option of running or passing if we don't have an O-line to get the job done.

Looks like next season is going to be a "rebuilding" season at this rate.

The Jets really need Kenrick Ellis to turn into a very good NT. Pouha has half the job down, against the run, but he's lacking in pushing the pocket and so the Jets routinely sub him out on third down in passing situations. That's all fine and good but people pass a lot on first and second down also and Pouha hurts us in those common situations.

Why did BJGE go nuts on us in the first Pats game at the end in the hurryup?? Because Pouha was off the field because the defensive staff thought the Pats would be passing instead of running.

Why did Brady go nuts on that last drive in the hurryup in the second Pats game? Because the Pouha was on the field (Ryan didn't want to get beat the same way twice) and the Jets got no pressure on him.

Pouha looks solid but he's really just good enough to lose to good teams.

Devito has a better motor than Pouha but he's also on the outside and not dealing with two blockers as much. I like him but he's a rotational guy who should be giving a real talent a breather on every third drive or so.

I think the Jets need to replace several spots in the front 7 and a few people who don't need to be replaced are getting up there in years also. Watching Bart Scott standing next to Ryan while BGJE and Brady killed us at the end of both Pats games was horrible.

I generally agree with all the points, but I would put speed at LB as a top priority over safety.

This is how I would attack the offseason:

    1. Cliff Avril.
A little concerned that Avril will get franchised and he hasn't played in a 3-4, but this guy can fly and really has a good feel for rushing the passer. A thread was already started about Avril and I am jumping on board. I can't say he is a true #1 rusher, but I think his speed and ferocity will be a welcome addition.

    2. Carl Nicks.
Callahan knows this guy, a lot of guys on this board wanted the Jets to take him including myself. Put him there in between Brick and Mangold and 3/5 of the line is taken care of.

    3. 1st round Pick - Looks to me like it will be OLB.

I'm not sure if the Jets will be in a position to grab a Tackle at this point. It seems like the tackles will go high and there will be a big drop off. Looks like there could be a couple of OLB prospects like Courtney Upshaw, Ronnell Lewis, and Zach Brown. If there is a tackle that is available then that would definitely be in play, just can't think of one in the mid to late 1st round.

    4. Hire Tom Clements or Joe Lombardi as OC
Tom Clements is the QB coach for the Packers and Lombardi (grandson of VInce Lombardi) is the QB coach in New Orleans. I think both guys could really help this offense go and help develop Sanchez.

    5. Bring Braylon Edwards Back.
I'm not really sure why the Jets let him go. Maybe they viewed him as a diva, but I can't see him being more of a locker room problem then Santonio has potentially been with his comments. Maybe the off the field stuff which I could understand, but its not like Plax doesn't have his own baggage. I think Braylon ultimately is a better player than Plax. I just don't think he has had a great QB throwing to him for most of his career. The Jets seem like they really miss his ability to stretch the field

Are you kidding? Sanchez has progressed? What planet do you live on? Read the story on the home page to this web site and understand the problem, i.e. the jets have a great defense but a terrible QB. In addition to everything else Sanchez screwed up last night, even the Hail Mary he threw at the end of the game didn't even reach the end zone--even had it been complete, time would have run out. It is so ridiculous that people blame Schotty when Tanny/Rex give him the QB duo of Sanchez and Brunell to work with--How can ANY OC do much with that level of talent? You can't make an atom bomb without uranium.

    His completion percentage is up.

    His TD/Int ratio is down.

(and that is playing behind the WORST Oline he's had since he was drafted)

    Here's a dollar buy a clue.

(and I'll give you one for free..How's that Rushing attack look this year? I guess thats Marks fault too. Better QB numbers, behind a worse line. Clearly he's regressed)

DID YOU JUST SAY GREAT DEFENSE?????? :rofl2:

The Defense that took the field with a lead and 95 yards to defend, and LOST?

The DEFENSE that got pushed around in Oakland while Sanchez threw for 369 yards?

The Defense that's giving up 21 points a game (which is skewed by 2 games v. Florida teams)

Great? (is there a new definition of the word of which I am blissfully unaware, because the term that describes the defense, right now as I understand the language is MEDIOCRE)

Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Eli Manning, and Fitzharvard say hi.

Am I missing any other late bloomers?
