When did the Jets become so bad at running in short yardage situations? Am I the only one who has almost no confidence in the Jets being able to punch the ball in the endzone in goal line situations right now? Yesterday I kept saying to myself that we might as well not even waste the down trying to run it in as it will only give us 1-2 shots to throw it. Maybe it's because our runs are so predictable but regardless, they aren't getting it done in those situations.
Very predictable + Injured Mangold + Hunter not nearly as good a run blocker as Woody That about sums it up in my opinion.
also, hard to tell whether or not conner is getting the job done... i lose track of the fullback most of the time so im really not sure... seems were not getting any push this year... this bye week should heal mangold up nice... and in general i do feel the line is getting better week by week... the more preperation time the better
we're having a tough time running it inside the 10 yard line. it's really tough to pass in these situations despite our success yesterday. would like to see this improve.
Yea it was always so obvious we were going to run on short and goal and we would get stuffed. Plax with 3 short tds could open things up for our run game or even our other receivers. No way hes not getting double coverage in red zone now.
Well it would be nice if Shotty called some plays down there where Plaxico was actually in and we ran, to at least pull some defenders towards him. Instead of that nonsense play we pulled with the rollout trying to hit Keller on 3rd down at the end. So dumb.
I can tell you exactly why: Shonn Greene is our just about only option as a short yardage back, we do not have another RB who is really built for those types of runs. Despite this, Shonn Greene excels running outside of the tackles. (18 carries, 96 yards, 5.45 AVG) He is not a "bruising" back he is a "down hill runner". The things about "down hill" backs is that they need either a large hole, or a few yards before contact to diagnose where the hole is, which guys to juke, or which guys to run over. Did you notice anything different about the successful runs this past game? A lot came on "stretch" hand offs where Sanchez runs to a side for a few steps before handing the ball off to Greene right at the edge of the tackle box. I said this weeks ago, and I know it is paradoxical, but Greene needs to get the ball more on the outside. Despite this, Schotty is Schotty and calls runs to the 1 and 2 hole when we need short yardage. Let's take a look at the last two runs of the game for us on offense: 1st down stretch hand-off to Greene for 7 yards. Next play inside handoff stuffed. Thanks Schotty.
Greene needs a push at the line to get things going on inside runs, just like any other back; take a look at 'cj2k' this year. I don't think you can blame Shotty for calling inside runs on 2nd and short, because that's what inside runs are designed for. Like most offensive issues, our problems are stemming from less than stellar, albeit improving, oline play. We get our o-line dominance back and the complaint will be "GOOD GOD WHY WONT HE JUST RUN IT UP THE MIDDLE," that seems to be the trend.
Teams need to respect the passing game which they disregard mostly with the Jets. Oline needs to coagulate some more. I think this will all improve after the BYE
A few reasons to account for: -Conner likes to go for kill shots too much which causes him to miss some blocks. -Someone else brought up the Woody vs. Hunter point. -I'm not sure but I haven't noticed us running the trap as much. Looks more like we're calling more dive plays instead. As I said, I haven't really payed enough attention on that front, though. -There's also Brandon Moore's hip surgery and subsequent absence from the beginning of TC due to said hip surgery which probably led to some problems early on in the season. -And, of course, Mangold's high ankle sprain has robbed him of some of his power since it happened. The OLine hasn't been in the best shape since the preseason started and it only got worse with Mangold going down and Hunter struggling early. These next few weeks are really going to prove the character of the offense and the proof is going to have to start in the trenches.
