From the Newark Star Ledger - Dave Hutchinson: Injury report NT Sione Pouha (knee), S Erik Coleman (illness), TE Jason Pociask (shoulder) and CB David Barrett (leg) didn't practice. Pouha, who injured his right knee in a pileup on Sunday, is expected to be out roughly a week. Coleman could be back any day.
Think this may be poor reporting cause I saw a blip that he tore the ACL & will be derailed for the year
The blip you saw was from 1028 in the wish you were here thread. While it may be true, it has not been reported yet.
Every day Coleman sits, E. Smith gets that much closer to being the starter. Good news about Pouha- our depth at DT isn't very encouraging right now, and the early reports about him from this year were promising.
I posted this thread because I also read 1028's report - and he said he had a source that told him about Pouha's injury. However, there was no confirmation. Hutchinson's report is the only PUBLISHED report on the injury.
Are you serious about that? I know Coleman isn't the fastest, nor the tallest, but he has been around for two years now, ans a starter. I do admit that Smith and rhodes looks better on paper than Rhodes and Colemn, due to compelmentarity, but to say that Smith is encroaching on the starting job is a bit of a leap to me. JMO...Interesting to see though
Quite serious about my statement above. Coleman did NOT impress in the slightest last year. He's slower than we'd like, and doesn't have the closing speed or run support that would find in a premier safety. His Freshman year was good by any standards, and he dropped off markedly last year. There's no loyalty in this organization anymore. All reports thus far are quite positive about Smith, especially making mention of his run support and heavy hitting- 2 things we haven't consistently seen in a NYJ safety since Victor Green. Smith is promoting himself and Mangini is watching. If you think for a moment that Coleman has the job either (a) by veteran default, (b) based upon his 1st season's performance or (c) because the CS feels bad that he's hurt and they are willing to wait it out, then you are watching this team with blinders on.
Would Smith be the FS or SS? And would playing time depend on the scheme, down, and distance. I figure Coleman might be better suited for passing situations and Smith for running given his big-hit abilities.
I hear you COZ.. I didn't know Smith was making such an impression on Mangini...until reading the two Rhodes articles, and I must admit I like Coleman mostly b/c he came in as a Rookie and stepped up...but as you said the new CS is much more shrewed than the last regime. I do believe though that Smith and Rhodes complement eachother better. than Coleman and Rhodes.
If they started, I would think Smith would be the SS. does he have the weight on him to be a hitter. I saw that Rhodes put on about 10 lbs of muscle tooo...quite impressive
Not to stir anything up, but the guy that was at camp yesterday and told us his source said Puha is done for the season.......the source was wrong....so what of the Martin rumour now?
I'm gonna say a rosary for Pouha.... I really HOPE he's OK.... he was about to emerge.... he was looking freakin great in camp. Let's see what happens.... it's hard to trust ANY source this year, including Hutchinson's report thsat Penny won the QB job.
