Your offense doesn't get a first down until the second quarter and get 14 total. Also doesn't help when the Patriots had 72 offensive plays compared to the Jets' 53. Not to mention the Pats had the ball for 34 minutes compared to the Jets' 26. The playcalling was pure shit.
Don't forget drops on 3rd downs. They play calling got better late in the game. We're so used to just blaming Schotty, do we forget the drops? Players have some fault too.
His bad play calling far outweighs his good play calling. I would rather have a good OC with an occasional bad call, than an OC who consistently calls bad games with few stretches of brilliance that fools people into thinking he is not the problem.
Hate that argument. The pats got the ball after our score with about 6:30 minutes left in the game. If we get the hell off the field by stopping the run in 3 plays, we get it back with ~4:00 mins to play. That drops the pats TOP to 31 minutes and its our ball with 4:00 to go. we need to get off the field, they hadnt been on there all day, and our offense just put a good time consuming drive together. They had no tired excuse at that point in time, they needed to put together a stop
The play calling was horrible late in the game. Down two touchdowns to Brady with less than 11 minutes left and he calls almost an equal number of running to pass plays(5-6). What was he trying to do eat up the clock? He did, took 6 minutes off it.
Phil Simms nailed this correctly. The Jets needed a long, time consuming drive to give the defense a rest. They had already been on the field too much due to the wretched offense. The Jets got the score and the defense was given a breather. The defense needed to make one stop and give the offense one chance to win the game.
Offensive plays is a bigger issue than TOP. 73 offensive plays is too many. Some of this goes to the D, but most to the O. Remember what 3 and outs do to field position.
We can cry about the drops all we want, but the offense had more than enough opportunities to outscore the Pats.
34 mins to 26 is not a crazy advantage. After we scored to make it 27-21 the TOP in the game to that point was: Jets: 25:03 Pats: 27:50 The D does not get the tired excuse. At the half it was about 16-14 i favor of NE as far as TOP goes, the D then had 12 mins at the half and allowed a quick score to open the 2nd half- were they tired at that point? stop w/ the excuses for the D. Did the playcalling drop passes and make poor throws? We sound like the dolphin fans who thought the problem was all henning last year. is brian a problem? of course but he's part of the problem, the biggest problems we have had this year are awful OL play and lack of execution.
The Pats had the ball for 8 more minutes, but you have to remember a good chunk of their offensive drives were done in a no-huddle or hurry up.. The jets defenders had to rush back to the line, couldn't sub, and had to play every play knowing if they make a slight mistake, Tom Brady is going to torch them. Face it, the offense gave the D NO HELP today, as usual. No first downs until the 2nd quarter. No passes thrown past 10 yards until the 4th quarter, or maybe it just seems that way. Shittenheimer is a joke.
It's hard not to agree with this. The Pats got the ball with more than 6 minutes left. An immediate 3 and out wasn't even necessary, but....we all know how it ended up. You can certainly blame the drops. Connor (I know, not on this team to catch passes) makes a ridiculous drop, Jets punt and 3 minutes later, Green-Ellis is scoring TD number one. If Connor makes that catch, which he should have, we extend the chains, and who knows. Holmes had a pretty bad drop right after that, and then Burress with two horrid drops. These guys are not helping Sanchez out at all. The pass was slightly behind Holmes, but, c'mon, he makes that catch 8 or 9 times out of 10. I know this is getting beat ad nauseum, but Schotty is the problem. He has no confidence in his QB, it shows in his play calling. I said this in another thread, his running plays are so unimaginative, Greene gets yards because of his strength and the o-line, not from any help on the play calling. Up-the-middle, up-the-middle, up-the middle....These stupid fake reverses, end-arounds, and double reverses are fooling no one, please just stop with the misdirection. Its not fooling anyone. The Ravens game, I could understand the trepidation, Sanchez was getting the piss knocked out of him, but yesterday? The Pats defense is amongst the bottom in the league (especially the back 4) and their middle linebacker, their defensive QB is out of the game (Mayo), and you play right to the other team's few strengths? Square peg, meet round hole. Promote Cavanaugh or Callahan now. You can argue about continuity all you want, or how you don't fire a OC mid-season (logic I don't understand), but an in-house guy (I prefer Cavanaugh, who I think who embolden Sanchez immediately) can't do any worse than the guy who's presently fucking up.
Good points. The D was tired and the Pats hurry-up skews Time of Possession. Total plays is better indicator to see why the D was shot from the bad offense (72 - 53).
great post, while schottenheimerdinger deserves blame it has become overbearing around here with everyone piling on him and not even bothering to realize the other deficiencies.
It was 59-48 in favor of NE after we cut it to 27-21. Bal ran 17 more plays than us a week ago plus had a bigger edge in TOP yet our D played well. Enough w/ the excuses for the D.
Nobody should be exonerated, you're right. Everyone's hands are dirty right now. Special teams, mostly, being the exception.
Yeah stopping Joe Flacco and Tom Brady are both equal tasks.. Good point. I can't believe how many people watched that game and want to blame the defense. Umm you guys are aware who we were playing, right? It's not easy to stop them ever.
So was it facing Brady? TOP or plays run? I see new excuses every few minutes. The bottom line is the D failed when we needed them most but b/c everyone wants to scapegoat Schottenheimer people are giving our D a pass.
