1st quarter What I hoped for: 3-1 What I expected: 3-1/2-2 What happened: 2-2 vs DAL - WIN vs JAX - WIN at OAK - LOSS at BAL - LOSS The first quarter of the season was not particularly good. Against 3 teams that missed the playoffs last year, the Jets went 2-2. By no means is that the end of the world, as Dallas and Oakland look like they could contend for playoff spots this year. But this was much closer to 1-3 than 3-1, so it's hard to be excited. 2nd quarter What I hope for: 3-1 What I expect: 2-2 at NE vs MIA vs SD BYE at BUF As important as the first quarter was to this season, this part of the season is twice as important. With three divisional games, and another game against a very tough San Diego team mixed in. Go 4-0 in these 4 games, and all the panic early in the season becomes a funny joke. Go 2-2, and we're 4-4 at the midway point with 4 AFC losses. Unfortunately, that's the most likely scenario. We should beat Miami. Posters who brush over that game as if it's an easy win, just because they're 0-4, are crazy. The Dolphins still have a tough defense, and they've won 4 of their last 5 games against the Jets. Still, a home team against a team with an awful offense should be a game we win for sure. The other 3 games are going to be tough, and there's a good chance we'll go 1-2. We're 9.5 point underdogs to New England, so that shows how much faith Vegas has in us. Then again, if I remember correctly, that was the spread for the playoff game last year. Personally, I have more confidence heading into this week. I'm not scared of New England like I was last year. Brady is playing phenomenally like always, but for as good as that offense is, that defense is just as bad. Still, it's hard to predict a win there, so I'll pencil in a loss, especially with Mangold's status still up in the air. That leaves at home against San Diego and on the road at Buffalo (after a bye). The Chargers are a tough team, but the Jets have had success against them. If Gates is still hobbled, the defense should match up pretty well against their outside weapons. And we know we'll have a huge advantage on special teams. We will know a lot more about the Bills at that point. Are they for real, or are they a product of a slightly easier schedule and getting by via smoke and mirrors? The truth lies somewhere in the middle. I don't think the Bills match up well offensively with us, though they'll try to screen us to death. However, the Bills have been very good at turning teams over, and Sanchez has shown he'll give the ball away. After writing this post, I'm feeling a little more confident in possibly going 3-1 in these games. This is going to be a huge stretch for us. While 4-0 is probably unrealistic, I think our defense will be too good to have us go 0-4. 2-2 is probably the conservative projection. Of course, with the bye involved, the first 3 games are going to be the more important ones. While the Jets have come out poorly after the bye 2 years in a row, I would hope Rex can figure out the Bills with an extra week of film. Still, there's a damn good chance we go into the bye week 3-4 with 4 AFC losses. Where we are right now, at 2-2, we need to go 8-4 in the last 12 to presumably get into the playoffs. 10-6 might not be enough, but it usually will get you in. 11-5 should get us in 95% of the time. 9-7, maybe, but you can never count on that. Our playoff competition will be New England (3-1), Buffalo (3-1), Oakland (2-2, tiebreaker), Pittsburgh (2-2), and Tennessee (3-1). This assumes that Houston (3-1) and Baltimore (3-1, tiebreaker) win their divisions. 2 darkhorse playoff teams are Cincinnati (2-2) and Cleveland (2-2). Sure, they're Ohio teams, and therefore kind of suck. Still, their schedules, going against the AFC South and NFC West, they can possibly get to 10 wins. If the '09 Bengals, '08 Dolphins, and '06 Jets can get into the playoffs, so can these teams. By the way, here are the last 2 quarters. 3rd quarter vs NE at DEN vs BUF at WAS This has 2 road games and 2 divisional games, one against New England. This HAS to be at least 3-1. 4th quarter vs KC at PHI vs NYG at MIA Again, this must be a 3-1 spot if we want to be a legit playoff team.
If the Jets play the way they played against Dallas in the opener before Mangold was hurt they're going to be 4-4 at best at the halfway point. In those circumstances they won't beat NE on the road next week and they won't beat SD at home. They'll have to beat two divisional opponents to get to .500 and we all know how AFC East games go, especially when one or both teams is on a chaotic tear as all three of these teams are. The Jets have won a game this year already just by showing up to play on the day while their opponent self-destructed. They've only got one other candidate for that kind of win on the schedule in KC.
I had us winning our first 4 and losing the following 3. Now I just hope we can somehow get 2 more wins before the bye.
"Tough defense" Get the fuck out. We can't stop the throw if our lives depended on it. Throw a bit and your run game gets going. You are overestimating our ability...Plus our coach is a field goal loving idiot...Easy win for you guys. I see you guys going 3-1. Loss at NE, win the next 3.
I think were overlooking this simple fact. Win next week, and were 1st in the division. Thats of course because im blowing off the Bills since any team that loses to Cinci isnt making the playoffs.
How so? The AFC West and South will only 1 team. The AFC North will have the usual 2. The AFC East has 2...with one team sucking and the other team is over performing...
I expect a 4-0 second quarter. Big win in New Englad silences critics and gives momentum back to Gang Green. Back to back home wins, and a win at Buffalo has the Jets at 6-2.
This is IF Mangold is healthy. IF Mangold aint healthy there is zero chance whatsoever of 6-2 esp after how exposed we were last night. Mangold COULD have another few weeks before hes ready
I said it in another thread, but don't let San Diego's record fool you. They have not been impressive. They have to do an east coast trip and will probably be without gates and floyd. the combined record of the teams they've beaten has been 1-11. and they didn't annihilate those teams either despite playing in SD for all 3 games. they squeaked out a win vs KC last week, the dolphins lost their QB and didn't have their starting RB and lost by 10, and they had to rally big time to beat minnesota week 1. revis will make vincent jackson disappear and they'll have a bunch of nobodies to throw to
4th Quarter of the season I'm pretty sure we don't face New England 3 times in the regular season. We're playing in Philly that week. :eaglessuck:
Hell of a post Mack. I agree with a lot of it. This team isn't SB bound at the moment, but that 2nd half of the season is definitely doable to come back and make the playoffs.
I never posted that... Mind blank there, I had the schedule in front of me, not sure why I wrote that.
