Dear Jets Offense, There's a few types of plays that we run very occasionally (well, almost never) that have been successful for many teams. And they have worked for us on the rare occasions that we call them. Maybe during this time of OL injuries would be a good time to consider a few. 1) Draw plays. You know, the ones that look like a pass plays and end up being a running play? Helps to slow down blitzes, and can work to open up the running game. It might be nice if the defenses we face weren't completely selling out on the blitzes when we're in passing downs. And if a couple of them work for good gains, they became another play option pass fake we could use. I've seen Greene get some long gains on draws on the very rare occasion that we run them. 2) Screen Passes. Actually, we've had a couple this year for good long gains. But it's another set of plays that we've never developed much that could be very effective- especially with current weaknesses in the line. And I don't consider throwing a quick pass to a WR a 'screen play'. 3) Roll Outs, Misdirections, Bootlegs. One of the things our QB does really well is throwing outside the pocket. We used to do this a lot more but now it seems we are relying on a straight drop back and holding the ball until the play develops- which usually comes around the same time the pocket collapses. Sanchez throwing outside of the pocket is his bread and butter, and I don't think we've even seen him do it once in the first two games. I realize "Schotty Sucks", but aside from that, what would your advice for him be this week? There's another thread for the Schotty sucks contingent.
1. Say NO to draws. Especially if it's 3rd and 15. (Had to take a shot at it. Har har har) 2. Clear out then dink-and-dunk underneath 3. Screen passes.
Make the blocking on run plays simpler until mangold gets back. Too much fancy stuff and not enough smacking the other team in the mouth, at least against Jax. Let the line push some people around instead of giving them all intricate assignments.
I'm not a coach or scout, but can tell what play the Jets are going to run 90% of time by their formation. Very predicitable!!!
Actually I don't think the predictability matters in the grand scheme of things, as I realized. In smashmouth football, we all know what's coming in fact - it's more like "Stop us if you can" mentality. So far, the problem is more of Jets OL not imposing their will on the opponent, nothing more, nothing less.
Another one I forgot to mention is Stretch Plays. Having the QB sprint out to make a handoff outside of the tackles. This is how the Bills got some long pops running against the Raiders. Do the Jets ever do this? Almost never. Any creativity we had on our run plays seems to be with blocking schemes that aren't working at the moment.
Very true. And I liked how the Jets did that- back when it worked. But with current line problems we need to game plan assuming we won't own the line for the whole game.
One of the best runs in the first half against Jax was a stretch. Didnt see it again in the first half and haven't checked out the 2nd half yet. We could definitely use a few more of those this week.
I'm going to rewatch both of the games this week and try to keep a primitive tally on what plays we ran. Yes, I'm that bored.
Oh one more... Can you please try to run LT to the OUTSIDE? Watching him run between the tackles and getting swallowed by the D-Line is getting old.
i would really like to see Holmes run a slant and go... he runs the slant so perfectly and so often that i think any CB cant help but bite and get burnt for a big gain... this should be saved for the perfect time though... i would like to see a few more screens as a few of you guys said... maybe a little horned frog set?? kerley seemed to look good when they busted it out in preseason... this would be an experimental thing of course but it would throw a little variety into the mix
All runs off RG only..none of the usual LG pulls etc Keller..keller and more keller...Let them cover Burress all day and work the middle. Also can we actually try to get Mcknight some touches of meaningless play as a change of pace from Greene/LT..
Flea Flicker. I still have images of Drew Brees slaughtering teams in SD when he would pitch it to LT, and LT would toss it back to him. He's done it with the Saints on more than a few occassions as well.
I have a problem with the OP. It is really quite specific and simple. It implies that the various measures discussed have not been considered before. To some extent it also implies those steps have not been tried before. I think they all have. The real implication is that the Jets do not run enough of those sorts of plays in the mix of plays called. Now that's a different matter, and I think for each play or type of play, it depends. Some other comments: Screen passes. His first two years, I did not recall seeing Sanchez throw screens with touch and effectiveness. It seemed a weakness of his. If he can't show he can get this type of play done in practice, don't put it into the mix merely because some postesr on TGG think we should try them more often. Roll Outs and Bootlegs. The problem with these is they put Sanchez at greater risk of injury, all other things being equal. I don't want to see MS get injured just to add variety to the playcalling. Probably the best advice is to try some slants and also quick outs. Gotta get the passing plays in there that don't take too long to develop, because the blocking is mediocre. But using the pass to help the running game is probably not a bad idea right now.
