I agree with what's been said about smith, he's great against the run but pretty poor in coverage. Pool is the best option in covering a TE. Our lb's are all too slow.
other article titles that wouldve worked "AIDS: the new threat" "The Industrial Revolution: Coming To A Town Near You" and "Newsflash! Bear shits in woods"
That was a role Maybin could have been turned into. Stand up Cover LB, to Rush when the TE doesnt release, and to beat the TE on Run plays.
He could have been a pretty good situational pass rushing project. Maybe not all that great this year, but a year or two under Rex could have turned him around quite a bit (assuming of course he also put on some bulk).
The problem I have with Pool, is that at times he just seems to either go to sleep or gets confused in zones / coverages , this is the reason he got dropped, I think. Smith knows the playbook, and last year when Jimmy L went down, we all thought our secondary would fall to pieces with Jim's D audibles, well Smithy stepped right into the job without missing a beat. Agreed on both counts. Also a big character in the locker room. I actually think they are going the other way, not built to block, but to be used primarily as receivers. Agreed on the type of player to cover though, maybe these Safety/LB tweeners that no one has wanted would do the trick
First of all this statement is garbage. Secondly its irrelevant since its unlike that Lewis will even play in the game. The Jets luck out again. Thirdly, the entire premise of the article is irrelevant since EVERY team is having trouble covering quality TEs. I think the rest of the league went to school on what the Pats did last season, and we are starting to see the results all over the league. Fassano had a great day against the Pats, not as good as Gronk's and Hernandez's but a god day nonetheless. Several other TEs had great days opening week. Quality TEs present a great problem for defenses in general. Its one of the reasons BB has spent a decade and invested a dozen draft picks before managing to acquire the 2 guys with the appropriate skill sets to make his offense go at elite levels. Watson and Graham were 2 better than average TEs for the Pats in the past decade but neither offered the combination of skills and flexibility of Gronk and Hernandez when they are BOTH on the field at the same time. As the season progresses the Jets may come close to duplicating the scenario with Keller and Cumberland as far as receiving goes, though Gronk and Hernandez are better blockers and Brady is a better passer. Its an old cliche that the NFL is a copy cat league. Increased TE production is a good example of it. But again, its not just a Jet problem, it is going to be a problem for the rest of the league as well. BTW I wouldn't be surprised if when the Pats play the Jets Cromartie doesn't get the call to cover Hernandez, while Wilson is put on one of the wide outs. It makes some sense. Small quick WRs are Cromartie's kriptonite anyways
With all due respect, you are full of shit. Belicheck waited 10 years for 2 decent tight ends? Look around the league, he missed out on some great ones. Henne passed for over 400 yds last week on your shitty defense, and now you face Rivers. Hahahaha.
