I know we already signed star QB Kevin O'Connell as our 3rd stringer after putting McElroy on IR so it might be too late for this anyways. But why not pick up Troy Smith as a wildcat QB who can also serve as one of our backup QB's? The kid can definitely run good enough to run a wildcat and although he isnt cut out to be an NFL quarterback can obviously throw well enough to run a wildcat, I know Kerley has looked good running it in preseason but I have to believe that Troy Smith would be a much more legitimate threat to throw and teams would have to take that into account. I know a lot of players that run the wildcat are ex college QB's like Brad Smith was, but there aren't any ex NFL QB's running the wildcat. It would add a little more of a threat if the defense perceived that your chances of throwing were closer to 50/50 instead of 95/5 like it is now. Commence blasting me.
For this year no but I'm not against having him on board next year... with O'Connell not on this team any longer and Brunell retired.
I should have mentioned he is currently a FA and Rex has said on record many times that he likes the kid a lot from when he was in Baltimore with him.
Already have a wildcat qb. Already have a young backup. It just doesn't make much sense for this team.
You are Crazy! Never in our lifetimes should Troy Smith be a Jet! THAT IS SICK! WHAT KIND OF CRAZY PERSON ARE YOU? THIS IS PLANET EARTH! Good God! Come on pal! Unbelievable idea. Terrible suggestion!!! ///Blasted.
whats odd and something people dont remember is the only reason Flacco saw the field early was cause of Smith being in an out the hospital with that sickness
Naw, it's a cat licking it's paws. There are a lot of players who are without jobs who could run the wildcat, but they need to bring more to the table than just that. I say no to Troy.
Yeah I know I'm not exactly cracking the code to win multiple rings with this idea but I can say this... Him being able to run the wildcat brings something to the backup QB position that O'Connell doesn't have. Him running the wildcat brings something to the table that Kerley doesn't have. Real NFL QB pedigree. I know this sounds hokey, I've just been pacing around all antsy waiting for kickoff so I figured "Hey post one of your harebrained schemes on TGG".
Yeah you're probably right but you gotta admit he was electrifying to watch at Ohio. And that's what running an NFL franchise is all about right?... my viewing pleasure. Seriously though, I know it's not a need, but it's never a bad idea to present a new problem to a defense that they haven't seen before. I personally would probably shit a brick right on my couch on our defense's behalf if one game the Pats threw Ryan Mallet out there to line up in the wildcat against our D. Then again, my proclivity to pants shitting is why I'm on the couch, not on the field or the GM's office.
I assume that, if he does find a job, he'll be a backup somewhere that is built around a mobile quarterback, similar to VY on the Eagles.
I'm all for picking up Troy Smith as a quarterback-quarterback. I think the guys got talent. He never got a shot in Baltimore, which is understandable, but he also never really got a fair shot in SF, which is questionable.
I'm all for it. Smith wasn't all that bad as a starter. He never really got a legit shot. It was never firmly his job so you really only got a sample set of a guy who was constantly looking over his shoulder with an impatient coach in Singletary.Would I want him as my full time starter? No. Is he a capable back up? Absolutely! Just because he's black and can run, doesn't mean he's only good for the Wildcat. He actually has a stronger arm than McElroy and has been pretty decent when called upon. I'd do it in a heartbeat. I also say that knowing that if Sanchez goes down, we're screwed anyway. =/
I totally agree. Smith is exactly what you want out of a backup quarterback: he's smart, he protects the football, and he's athletic enough that he can make big plays from time to time. I've never really understood why the 49ers have been so insistent on going back to Alex Smith whenever they get the chance, but I think they would've been better off with Troy. Kerley hasn't played QB since high school, he's in no way qualified to play QB in the NFL. He can throw a football but he's never learned to call plays or read a defense.
