Cumberland is insanely athletic. 260lbs with a sub 4.5 is pretty bad ass..... Tom Moore was a great addition to help the offense as well!

    Love the intelligence behind that.

Anyone else notice Sanchez yabbering and audibling more at the LOS than in previouis seasons?

If these two can pick up their blocking thus allowing us to use 2 te sets more frequently, this can completely change the dynamics of our passing game, and more than overcompensate for our significantly aged receiving corps.

I think its pretty likely we see some injuries to the WR corps this year, meaning that if these guys can get their blocking up to par the 2 TE set can just flat out kick ass tearing up the middle of the field as well.

Also really like Josh Baker to make the PS this year. Whats funny is Mulligan was just abused last week against houston as a blocker. Yet he is all but guaranteed to make a roster spot over one of those three, even if they are light years better as receivers. Looking forward to seeing more of Cumberland and Baker tonight!

I wish we could take a Mulligan on Mulligan.

I wonder how Cumberland went undrafted with that kind of physical talent. Even if he couldn't block at all, he has the tools to be a potent pass-catcher.

He played at illinoisand he caught like 40 passes in his career. So all he was, was a physical prospect with little production and zero blocking skills.

I just wanted to see Cumberland get more work with the first-team offense. Looks like that's about to happen.

WOW....sounds a lot like....the late, and unlamented, Ben Watson. A good but not great physical freak that the Pats had a while back. But I digress

2 TE sets are VERY difficult to defend, especially when you have the right skill set mix. It presents a lot of match up problems in both the running and passing games. ie

    1. you spread out the D with 2 WRs. You get 7 across the front.- all the front 7 are covered and being blocked. Even if the offense is stalemated on the LOS, creases and soft spots will occur and a tough RB can consistently make 3-5 yd gains.

    2. If you try to solve the problem by bringing the S closer to the LOS, you are opening up the entire middle of the filed to quick releases by the TEs, especially if they motion.

    3. Off this motion, you can use the TE, much like a trapping G all across the various holes from AB gap out to leading a sweep.

    4. and then you get the physical mismatches when team have smaller/quicker OLBs or undersized pass rushing DEs

5 You also get the advantage helping your pass blocking. Having 2 TEs moves the outside pass rushers WIDER by 3' simply by alignment.

On the negative side, Cumberland sound like Keller clone. The two TEs can be even more effective when you have the array of skill sets the pats have in their TEs. They have the pure blocking TE (the guy who blocks first and catches about 20 balls a season) The "Dallas Clark" pass catching TE, who can be split out or be motioned. A good blocker, but that's not what you have him out there for. And the guy who can do it all....say like a Rob Gronkowski.

I'm guessing the Pats are going to run more 2 and 3 TE sets than anyone else in the league this year. I wouldn't be surprised if the Jets aren't right up there in that category as well

When you see what teams like the Pats/Indy can do with the two TE set it makes you wonder why more teams do not use it. If Plax can stay healthy with Holmes and two TE's that is going to be tuff to defend. With Cumberlands speed he is a matchup nightmare.

One thing I like about this is that it shows that guys are moving up within our system that Sanchez has known for awhile. One knock on the Jets that I've noticed people say is that Sanchez has little chemistry with the receiving corps because Braylan, Cotch, and Smith are gone. What people don't realize is Keller, Holmes, LT, Greene, Cumberland, and don't forget Scotty McKnight know Sanchez for more than a year.

So far it has been Mulligan and Keller... Have they used Cumberland with Keller yet this preseason?
