The contract renewals of the "core 4", that started a year ago, has finally ended. With the prior contracts and some new FA signings Tanny and the CS have shaped up their "core 10" (in terms of contracts).

O: QB Sanchez, WR Holmes, LT Ferguson, C Mangold, RG Moore

D: CB Revis, CB Cromartie, OLB Pace, ILB Harris, ILB Scott

in 2011 and 2012 (except maybe Moore) these 10 guys will be the heart of our team, we'll only go as far as they take us. Of course some youngsters will have to step up but you get my point...

Are you guys confident in all of them? Some choices you don't agree with?

Personally I think we kind of overpaid (not by much though) Cro, Holmes & Harris (although detailed contract info isn't yet available) and that's to be blamed on the lock-out. However with no lock-out we would have had a ton of dead money so who knows what would have happened. All in all I'm happy they're back. Also it seems like Holmes left money on the table to come back with us so maybe it's just me not assessing his value correctly.

Pace and Scott's contracts aren't all that great either considering their on-field contribution but one can see why we over-paid at the time. When Pace came here the Jets were in dire need of a pass-rusher and took a gamble, while Scott HAD to be a Jet since he was supposed to be an extension on the field of Rex.

Revis, Ferguson and Mangold's deals are a magnificent work done by Tanny.

Sanchez's deal unfortunately is part of the old rookie system where top 10 picks would be paid money they didn't actually deserve. It's no one's fault and Tanny couldn't have done anything better.

Moore doesn't really belong in this conversation but he is the 10th highest paid member of the Jets. My opinion looking at his contract and next year probable cap hell is his deal will be re-done, either adding a year and reducing his 2012 salary, asking him to take a pay cut or cutting him outright. Still, if his production remains untouched by the hip surgery, he's worth the money he's making...

The Jets have so much money at linebacker over the next two seasons that it's crazy.

Cromartie, Scott, Harris and Pace are all overpaid. Even Harris is damn good but not a 9 million a year player.

Holmes, Mangold, Revis, Brick are all great contracts.

Sanchez is just a product of a past system that was a broken. His cap numbers the next three seasons is awful.

All I cay say is that the Jets better draft well because they are not going to be able to make any splashes in free agency for a few years.

This is an excellent post and I agree completely.

Cromartie's contract actually isn't THAT bad if he improves his physicality. I really, really hate the fact that we can't touch those LB contracts. It's insane. The fact that Scott and Pace had to guarantee their deals for next year means Tanny must have been desperate to clear that 2 million off the cap this season. Both of them will be gone in 2013.

Sanchez will get reworked next year, which is a big help.

I get the feeling a big part why (apparently) Sanchez hasn't been asked to restructure yet is because Tanny knows he'll have to restructure his deal in 2012 already.
However maybe it's just because they don't want to keep him off the field until August 4th and after that deadline he'll get re-worked...

As far as Scott and especially Pace all we can hope for is that they step up their production a bit... hopefully the new DL will help.

Is it possible they will do a rework and extension for Sanchez before Thursday? Those cap numbers over the next 3 years are insane. I guess the question would be, are they 100% sold on him as the long term answer. The cap numbers are crazy and he has 3 years left. Then in 2014 I'm sure his agent will want some insane contract with 15 million per year.

In a few years when the TV contracts are re-done (I think 2013?) the cap will probably be much higher. Don't worry, we'll be fine.

how can we be a ground and pound team and not have a RB in our core 10?

O: QB Sanchez, WR Holmes, LT Ferguson, C Mangold, HB Greene

D: CB Revis, CB Cromartie, ILB Harris, ILB Scott, NT Pouha

negotiated between Pouha and Wilkerson but Pouha will probably be more effective especially on the run

I'm talking in terms of contracts...

That said when 3/10 highest paid guys are OL you know you're a run first team...

Contract #'s are going to increase lock step with the TV contract. In case you have forgotten the Players have X percentage of all league revenues. With an aggressive team/GM this cap game is going to be a perennial endeavor.

How high will that TV Contract raise the cap? I heard 220 Million which add 100 million on to the current cap. Thats insane and ridicolous but I guess all the players will be making more money.

If Brandon Moore's production remains untouched by hip surgery, he'll be one of the best values on this team in 2012 at $2.75 million. The guy has been one of the best run-blocking guards in the NFL for some time now. He's underpaid, in my opinion.

I brought this up in the Cotchery thread and I know what an uncomfortable idea it is, but it might be wise to trade away Moore next year while we can get something for him. Frankly, if I'm Brandon Moore, and I've been a good soldier my whole career, and I have another great season in 2011, I'm holding the fuck out in 2012 and getting the last big payday of my career.

I wouldn't think any lesser of him for doing it.

Roughly $93 mil will be divided amonst these 10 players in 2012. Don't expect a single splash next year.

I really hope not. If we can clear this year's number, it would be for the best. We won't diminish next year's number with a restructure right now. Next year is the time to restructure and extend his contract.

No one is worrying about 2013. 2012 is Tanny's big magic year. It's when we see what he does when he can't afford any big free agents. This year is going to be one hell of an evaluation period.

Don't count on Shonn Greene getting a second contract with the Jets.
