I am 100% aware this has been talked about in bit and pieces of other threads before but we have Kenrick Ellis and Mohammed Wilkerson who I assume will be pass rushers and run stoppers. This leaves someone else on the defensive line whose gonna have to go in on third and long...

Mike Devito is not a pass rusher as seen last year, he had 59 TOT and not one of them was a sack.

Sione Pouha had two sacks last year while better than Devito its still nothing impressive.

Ropati Pitoitua seemed to impress the staff last year but he was injured.

Shaun Ellis had 4.5 sacks which again, not impressive. If he stays for less money though he might be our option on 3rd and long and other passing situations for pass rush.

Opinions on who this 3rd person will be ?

I don't think they have plans on Kenrick Ellis being a big pass rusher.. I'm not even totally sure how much Wilkerson is going to be able to get to the qb this year.

As we saw last year, the Jets usually put Pace and/or Taylor as a down lineman in passing situations. We usually saw Shaun Ellis and/or Pryce at DT with Pace and Taylor on the ends. This year will probably be pretty similar. We'll see a lot of Shaun Ellis (assuming he's re-signed) and/or Wilkerson playing inside on passing downs, with Pace and whoever else we bring in (Taylor or a F/A, or maybe even Westerman) to play outside. We could also see a lot of Pitoitua playing across the line if he is healthy and ready to contribute.

The sacks will come from everywhere due to the nature of the D employed. DLine, OLBs, ILBs, Safeties, Nickle Backs, and even CBs will make plays. It would be a big surprise if any one player had more than 8 sacks.

I truly believe that Wilk could be an impact player from day one. This isn't based on anything but a hunch but I wouldn't be surprised if we're calling him our best d-lineman by mid-season.

Devito gushed about him after working out with him for an hour. Wilk could see some serious time late in the season.

Wilk is going to get plenty of opportunities. but as fans we shouldnt expect much from him early on. He hasn't had an offseason, and has a short TC to get up to the speed of the NFL game. Anything we get from our rookies this year is a bonus. I expect everything to be very much like last years rooks.

Wilk had a shot at rookie of the year with an off-season to learn the scheme (might still since every rookie is fucked).

Hopefully Devito gave him a decent heads up. By week 4 he'll have more career sacks than Gholston. Mid season.... beast mode.

yeah he did, but just studying a playbook isnt enough without being able to put it into practice on the field...

With this truncated off season I think this will be a redshirt season for most rookies......god knows what with an UDFA. If any contribute if at all that will be a serious bonus, especially early in the season.

3-4 defensive lines don't have pass rushers.

Whoa, whoa, whoa...this is a thread about pass rushers on the defensive line.

Talking about pass rushing 3-4 OLBs makes too much damn sense for this thread.

Not sure why Pouha can't be a three down NT, is it not like they are looking for ten sacks from the NT position.

Rex loves to put smaller faster guys in the middle in passing situations.

He creates no pressure from the middle.

What Jenkins could do isn't common, but Pouha can't do it at all.

We need a NT who can move a OL when they're in pass pro, moving the QB off his mark. That's why when Jenkins was in on 3rd down back in 2010 it was almost a certainty the defense was getting off the field.

2011 was a very different story.

Good points, I would think Ellis will take that role then.
