Just like the Jets can't count on Kyle Wilson to start at corner? ...even when the Jets made the playoffs in 2009 with Lito Sheppard, Drew Coleman, and Dwight Lowery playing opposite Darrelle Revis? Mike DeVito should be penciled into one starting spot...and if Manish's report is true about Marcus Dixon playing an important role, then that means we already have two guys that are going to contribute to the rotation. Pitoitua is also healthy again. Mo Wilkerson will make an impact during his rookie year. It may take a few weeks, but he'll earn a starting spot this year. If the stay believes their defensive end rotation can play at a high level without Shaun Ellis, he'll be let go. Plain and simple. I feel like I've been saying this for years, but it's time to get younger in certain spots. The front seven finally has some young blood with Kenrick Ellis and Mo Wilkerson coming on board - this defensive line has a chance to be very, very good for a long time.
Ellis however is the only one of our DEs that has proven he can get to the QB. I know it's not a DEs job in a 34 etc but it still doesn't hurt... DeVito can't get to the QB, and it was also Pitoitua's weakness... How bad will our pass rush suffer from not having Ellis around? It's not like we have Wake and Matthews at OLB...
1. Cameron Wake is a faggot. 2. Hopefully younger, stronger, faster defensive ends will improve our pass rush. Calvin Pace needs to stay healthy though. I'm still hoping that the front office cuts Bryan Thomas too. Wilkerson is a lot more athletic than people seem to think. He'll make some plays in the backfield when he's asked to do that. It's not like Shaun Ellis racked up double digit sacks in 2010 - he only had five. Drew Coleman had four. Ryan uses his linemen to create space for other players. Our defense brings the noise from all over the place - defensive backs are dangerous weapons in Ryan's scheme. DeVito and Pouha are great at holding their ground. Kenrick Ellis is a space-eater too.
Nothing would make me more happy than to see this come true. IMO, the lack of D-line rotation finally caught up to us at the AFC Championship game as Mendenhall ran through our D in the 1st half as if it was sitting on the bench. I do want Shaun Ellis back (even though I started a thread 2 or 3 yrs ago that said it was time for us to trade him for a draft pick). Starters (for now) = S. Pouha, M. DeVito, S. Ellis Backups/Rotation = K. Ellis, M. Wilkerson, M. Dixon, R. Pitoitua, J. Gilbert
If you hear Lombardi talk on NFL network it seems like in the new CBA there will be some rules that help retain older players... this might help the Jets keep Ellis if they so choose.
much better run stopper than a pass rusher he is a great #2 rusher but when he is the #1 and gets doubled he disappears that game vs the pats was an exception.. not the rule i personally would like some young free agent blood on the dline
The Pats game was an aberration. I'm afraid that he's finished. He did not have a very good season in 2010.
Ellis is probably going to ask to return. How would he feel about going to a new team after this lockout as a 34 year old veteran learning s new defense? Fuck that. He should return on a year deal. The youth can learn from him. He plays 20 snaps a game.
agreed. Ellis should shuffle into Pryce's role from last year. Veteran mentor, who gives the defense an reliabel 20-30 snaps a game. but above all teaches the young guys how to be Pros and gives them the tips they need to become successful athletes in the NFL.
I'm pretty interested to see what we get from Wilkerson and K Ellis. I'm thinking these guys could turn into beasts in Rex's D and sooner than we think. Still, no way of knowing for sure and so Signing Ellis to a 2 yr deal is probably the way to go.
Shaun will be my favorite player if he takes the minimum The defensive line that scares me though is the Detroit Lions.......Fairley next to Suh = Scary
Ellis has been pretty much injury free during his time here hasn`t he? and didn`t he play recently with a big cast on his hand or am I imagining that? For a reasonable price I think most Jets fans would be happy having him as depth at the very least.
