Mark Sanchez says Scotty McKnight will be “a steal”

Posted by Mike Florio on March 9, 2011, 5:50 PM EDT

We were intrigued by the news that Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez made an appearance at the Colorado Pro Day workout, so that he could throw the ball to boyhood friend and former Buffaloes receiver Scotty McKnight.

So we decided to talk to Sanchez about McKnight, and about their friendship.

Sanchez told PFT by phone that they’ve been friends since grade school. They were ball boys at Santa Margarita High School when Carson Palmer played quarterback there, and they have worked out with Bob Johnson. They played at different high schools and colleges, but Sanchez and McKnight and their families have remained close.

McKnight’s current goal is to join Sanchez at the NFL level.

“He’s the best guy who didn’t go to the Combine,” Sanchez said regarding McKnight. “He didn’t drop a ball [at the Pro Day workout]. He’d be a steal for someone.”

McKnight ran a speedy 4.46 and 4.48 in the 40-yard dash. (If the surface is perceived to be a fast one, scouts likely will add time to the number.)

Gil Brandt of NFL.com thinks that Sanchez’s involvement at the Pro Day workout could get McKnight, a walk-on who became the Buffaloes all-time receiving leader, picked in round seven.

And we’ve got a feeling that Sanchez’s current team could be interested in giving the quarterback a weapon with whom he feels incredibly comfortable.

Presumably comfortable enough to wipe a booger on his coat.

I would've rathered Herzlich than one of Sanchez friends.
But hey, it's the 7th round.

    I like this draft overall.
If Ellis can stay off mary jane, this could turn out real good.

Maybe they are just drafting receivers to fill out the Jets West camp?

Next March...i'm going to do my first Jets mock on TGG.

Here's a little teaser: I'm going to include a player with the last name McKnight at some point.

Only 26 more picks and then the board can start screaming for some of their favorites as UDFAs!

This is a great idea... draft a guy that your starting quarterback loves to go out and party with. No potential consequences there!

It does make the McElroy pick look a lot better.

I hope Scotty exceeds expectations and makes the team, but if we re-sign Santonio and Braylon, the Sanchez-Scotty friendship might take a hit when the Turk comes calling...

guys its not like we picked mcknight purely because he is marks friiend. It certainly didnt hurt, but it wasnt the only reason.

The guy has a chance to be a ST gunner for us. He has speed, and he certainly has production, you don't become your school's all time leading receiver by accident.

He is the 10th player in NCAA history to catch a pass in every game in which he played.

He is a Jet, so let's wish him the best

I'm now saddened by the fact the draft is almost over.

But we are certainly improved from where we were thursday morning. If the NFL can figure this labor shit out, we are in a great spot to succeed next year. Thats really impressive news for us at this point.
