How much more production could the Pats really get out of their RB's next year than they got out of Woodhead and Green-Ellis this year? Watching them pick two RB's and a backup qb today was awesome.
I disagree with the first part of this entirely. People arent drafting Mallet because of character concerns, and frankly this notion that somehow guys with character flaws somehow get better when they go to New England is just not true. Also, I don't know what their is to develop as far as a QB, Mayock said it best he was the most pro ready passer in the draft, and no one took him. The Cassell thing is an exception, people are going to want to see Mallett on the field and the only time Mallet would see the field is during garbage time. Frankly, I would say the "genius" of the Pats draft came with Pioli.
This is a typical draft for the Pats. They never take the players they're projected to take and they almost always trade down at least once. Their drafts never look all that incredible on paper but look what they did last year. I'd be careful about saying they had a crappy draft until you watch these guys play.
The pats have not drafted very well in recent years. This draft doesn't look to be too great either but you never know until these guys get into games and try to play football.
I give them credit for being able to move around in the draft, but that is it. I'm not a complainer and quite frankly don't care who they draft. There is no comparison in talent between the Jets and Patriots. The difference has always been at QB, that is changing. I could really pissed yesterday with the misinformation on a graphics from the NFL network. The graphis basically said the Pats got seven starters out of the last 2(?) drafts. The names were Ron Brace, Darius Burler,Chung, Cunningham and some others. The fact is that some of these guys may have started burt can't be considered front line starters. Give me the info, just make sure it's the correct info.
The media fawns all over Belicheat and his draft. Meanwhile, since Pioli left, there drafts are avarage and they could not find a good RB if their life dependent on it. The QB is a future pick so another wasted pick for this year. I will take quality over quantity every time. Tanny is the best GM in the NFL. Belicheat was on the NFL network last night, man is he ugly, got big warts all over his face.
This. I've never thought the perpetual ass-kissing from the media ever made it through to Belichick's arctic fortress of evil, but maybe he really is starting to believe his own press. Take away the mystique and the blind faith he gets in every move he makes, and what you're left with is a GOOD team (not a GREAT team) that has lost 3 staight playoff games and just drafted their 37th running back that no one's ever heard of. Meanwhile Pioli is quietly building a powerhouse out in KC...
According to the media the Pats can do no wrong. Every player they pick is a top ten talent that magically slipped to them. Also The Pats act like they have won 8 superbowls in a row and they don't really need any new talent but they keep acquiring more and more picks but whatever they do is still an A+. What are they doing? and what potential starter have they picked? or are they so good that they can't improve?
I am so glad nobody from theganggreen is drafting for the Patriots. I am not joking one bit when I say anyone from this site would have made better picks than NE has. Your average poster on here would have selected Cam Jordan, Mark Ingram and Akeem Ayers with their first 3 picks. Followed by Greg Little, Brandan Harris, and Allen Bailey. Holy shit, did we dodge some bullets.
Last year people weren't talking about a crappy draft. Not this badly anyway. Most of us hated that they got Gronkowski AND Hernandez, and McCourty was viewed as a solid corner (albeit not as good as he turned out to be last season). This year's entirely different. Not sure how you can make the comparison. We'll see how it rounds out, but right now it looks like a complete dud.
Took this off another Jets board reiterate the point that Belichicks drafts over the years have merely been average, contrary to how people in the media praise him for the wealth of talent he brings in. 2005 DRAFT (Probably is best draft) 1 Logan Mankins, OL, Fresno State (solid) 3 Ellis Hobbs, CB, Iowa State (was a decent CB) 3 Nick Kaczur, OL, Toledo (solid) 4 James Sanders, FS, Fresno State 5 Ryan Claridge, LB, Nevada-Las Vegas 7 Matt Cassel, QB, USC (KC) 7 Andy Stokes, TE, William Penn 2006 DRAFT (BUUUSSST) 1 Laurence Maroney, RB, Minnesota (bust) 2 Chad Jackson, WR, Florida (bust) 3 Dave Thomas, TE, Texas (bust) 4 Garrett Mills, TE, Tulsa (bust) 4 Stephen Gostkowski, K, Memphis (still there) 5 Ryan O’Callaghan, OL, California 6 Jeremy Mincey, DL, Florida 6 Dan Stevenson, OL, Notre Dame 6 Le Kevin Smith, DL, Nebraska 7 Willie Andrews, CB, Baylor 2007 DRAFT (Only Meriweather) 1 Brandon Meriweather, FS, Miami (Fla.) 4 Kareem Brown, DL, Miami (Fla.) 5 Clint Oldenburg, OL, Colorado State 6 Justin Rogers, OLB, Southern Methodist 6 Mike Richardson, CB, Notre Dame 6 Justise Hairston, RB, Central Connecticut State 6 Corey Hilliard, OL, Oklahoma State 7 Oscar Lua, LB, USC 7 Mike Elgin, OL, Iowa 2008 DRAFT(Mayo the only one) 1 Jerod Mayo, ILB, Tennessee 2 Terrence Wheatley, CB, Colorado 3a Shawn Crable, OLB, Michigan 3b Kevin O’Connell, QB, San Diego State (NYJ) 4 Jonathan Wilhite, CB, Auburn 5 Matt Slater, KR, UCLA 6 Bo Ruud, ILB, Nebraska 2009 DRAFT (Aside from Edelman who contributed) 2a Pat Chung, SS, Oregon 2b Ron Brace, DT, Boston College 2c Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut 2d Sebastian Vollmer, OL, Houston 3a Brandon Tate, WR, North Carolina 3b Tyrone McKenzie, LB, South Florida 4 Rich Ohrnberger, OL, Penn State 5 George Bussey, OL, Louisville 6a Jake Ingram, LS, Hawaii 6b Myron Pryor, DT, Kentucky 7a Julian Edelman, WR, Kent State 7b Darryl Richard, DT, Georgia Tech Didn't post 2010 since it's still too early to judge.
To be fair, still too early to judge 09, too. Brace and Vollmer both look like they'll contribute, and Tate could still develop into a good receiver with another year as a starter. Still, unimpressive given how many picks they came away with. Last year's draft was a good one at a few positions for them.
I always thought the Pats were wildly overrated with the draft. I can't believe they haven't cashed in this stockpile of picks they have to try and surround Brady with 1 or 2 true difference makers to make his life easier as his career winds down. Funny we have both their 2008 3rd round picks btw
Patrick Chung was a major contributor last year. Mostly to us turning the lights out in Foxboro. :breakdance:
Someone on the NFL Network just said the Pats had the best day 2 because they had success in Rounds 2 and 3 in the past. Seriously?
Clayton on ESPN said: 2. New England Patriots: The Patriots entered the draft with six picks in the first three rounds, but they made a few moves too many. They have a plan every year to load up on first- and second-round picks for the future, but this was the year to cash in. My one criticism is that they didn't get a pass-rusher. Had they drafted Jabaal Sheard, a defensive end from Pitt, or Brooks Reed, a linebacker from Arizona, I'd make them my big winners. They added three Pro Bowl defenders in the first three rounds of the four drafts previous to this, but this year they needed a pass-rusher. According to ESPN Stats & Information, opposing quarterbacks had a 103.2 passer rating when the Pats sent five or more pass-rushers. That's third worst in the league. They added a nice tackle in Nate Solder. Ras-I Dowling is an intriguing corner. Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley are role-playing running backs. Mallett is a bargaining chip for the future. But they didn't get that pass-rusher. Instead, they worked deals that allowed the Saints to get a pass-rusher, Cameron Jordan, and running back Mark Ingram. They let the Jets get maybe the next Trevor Pryce in Muhammad Wilkerson. Sure, the Pats got an extra first- and second-round picks next year, but they need to take care of current business. P.S. Don't forget if you look at this from who did we really get from this draft then you must include Cro. When you do that it's a slam dunk for us.
