Yes, because that would fit in perfectly with the rest of the statement and the questions of price and attitude.
I felt very confident that Holmes and Edwards would both return. Maybe it was blind optimism or faith in Tanny? Either way, I'm getting very concerned now. I thought both back would not only be good for the team, but very beneficial to Mark.
I would prefer Braylon over Santonio anyway. Braylon's run blocking is great and he is not afraid to get dirty over the middle. Its been a long time since we have had a fast big wr like Braylon. He would also probably come a bit cheaper.
1) How much money is Holmes going to get? Teams didn't want to spend more than a 5th for him last year... can his image change so much in 1 year? (Of course he's going toget a good contract, but something that we can't match without jeopardizing the future of our franchise? Don't think so). 2) He's just protecting his interests, what is he supposed to say: "Oh yes I will sign with the Jets for less money, c'mon NY make me a shitty offer" ? He's only been here one year, he doesn't owe the Jets any loyalty. 3) He clearly HATES Schittenheimer... and well... I can't disagree with him.
I hope he's doing this to let the Jets know I want to get paid a big long term contract even if the 2010 rules are in effect. don't bother with RFA and deep down the only team he wants to play for is the NYJ's. That would be fine then
Yes. He stayed out of trouble last season, and made enough big plays that a team in a diluted FA class may decide to throw money at him. He's a Top 2 FA WR if the non-2010 rules apply, and the other guy is coming off an injury shortened season. It only takes one team to overpay. I agree with part of this. He owes the Jets no loyalty, and your alternative quote is absurd. Good luck finding anyone that would argue that. I wish people would quit with these stupid straw men. He's not supposed to say anything. That's the point. I asked this before, but are there any other FAs in his situation saying these things? If he doesn't want to sign the RFA tender, fine. Right now, we don't even know what the FA rules will be. What good does it do him to open his mouth either way right now? He's not protecting anything! He doesn't know what his interests entail until the lockout is settled. Seriously, can anyone find me all the other potential RFAs dropping quotes like this right now?
If 2010 rules apply, neither one is going to be cheap. The one benefit to Santonio is that we'd hold sole negotiating rights regardless of whether he signed the tender. At that point, however, do you overpay for BE and look to trade Holmes' rights, or do you let Edwards walk and put faith in the fact Tanny is no AJ Smith?
1) I agree it only takes one team to overpay, however I don't think he has done enough to be granted anything close to the top WRs in the league and surely without insane guaranteed money. But that's just me and I could easily be wrong... 2) How many other WRs are getting asked these questions (makes sense in english right?)? How many play in a media market like NY and how many have this "talent-vs-off the field question marks" ratio? I'm not saying he was smart in saying these things... but I don't see it as anything exceptional or anything that changes the situation. He wanted everyone to know what his position was... and that's fine... when he starts saying these things 3 times a week than I'll start worrying...
Your guess is as good as mine, or anyone's. No clue what teams are thinking, but we do have history to rely on, and I'd imagine someone would overpay. Reporters are reporters. NY or not, they're asking these questions. They're not going to publish a no comment just to publish it. I don't know whether it changes the situation, but it can't help it from our team's perspective.
What I would do if 2010 rules apply, is to go hard after braylon since we own Santonio's rights. Tell Holmes to shop himself around for a while and see if he gets any team willing to offer him a mega-contract (and subsequently give up a 1 and 3 to us). If he does, he signs with the other team, and we have the option of matching the offer, or letting him walk for a 1 and a 3, which imo he is not worth at all. When he realizes nobody will offer him that kind of deal and give up the compensation required, he will come back to the negotiating table. Meanwhile, get Braylon a deal so we hold all the leverage over Holmes. Holmes will eventually make the choice he wants to play this year (and get paid) if he does not he will not get the mega deal next offseason that he wants above all else. I have said it before, these two need to be the priority over everything else. Sanchez needs consistently elite weapons to make him reach his full potential. It will still be a few years before he can start to make all the weapons around him better (at least consistently). that said, if we are forced to let one receiver go, i would prefer Holmes walks. Braylon is the more consistent receiver, not once has he questioned his snap count (he questioned the offense going conservative after the 09 AFCCG) he is clearly a leader in the locker room, he loves NY, couldn't imagine leaving the town, he loves working with Mark he thinks he will be a great one. He loves playing for Rex, he wants to get paid, but he would take some discount to stay here. Braylon is the better blocker, and he no longer has the dropsies like holmes.
It was only confusing because our top 2 receivers were plagued with drops at some point in their respective careers lol.
Tell you what, last year Braylon was nothing short of out standing last year , where did all the drops go?? I know there were alot of comments about getting on the jugs machine. I would be interested to see just how many drops Braylon and Santonio had, I'd be putting my money on Santonio having more drops than Braylon.
Yes, that was the point of his comment. Of course Santonio had more drops than Braylon; that's why Scoff's comment made perfect sense to me. People were confused because of Braylon's reputation. Braylon had, I believe, 2 all season.
I think Braylon had 2 drops last year. Holmes dropped two touchdown passes so he easily had more drops.
