Brandt's supplemental draft primer By Gil Brandt / NFL.com Senior Analyst (July 9, 2006) -- Training camps are just around the corner, but teams still have a chance to add fresh talent to their roster on July 13. That's when the annual supplemental draft takes place and this year's draft has seven entrants. Of the seven, Virginia linebacker Ahmad Brooks, Iowa State defensive end Jason Berryman, junior college linebacker David Dixon and Texas fullback Ahmad Hall were already on the radar. (See more information on them below.) But now they have been joined by: Marco Martin, DT, Texas: Martin was highly recruited out of high school but had a hard time getting on the field at Texas. Craig Berry, OL, Connecticut: Berry was a starter for UConn for much of the past two seasons. Richard Washington, RB/WR, N.C. State: Washington caught 29 passes for 348 yards for the Wolfpack as a junior in 2004 but was dismissed from the team before his senior season. He worked out for scouts in early July and was measured at 5-foot-10 7/8 and 164 pounds. He ran outdoors on grass in good conditions but there was a light rain. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.66 and 4.76. He also had a 1.55 and 1.59 in the 10-yard dash, 2.75 and 2.72 in the 20-yard dash, 29-inch vertical jump, 8-foot-6 long jump, 4.50 short shuttle, 12.77 long shuttle and 7.23 three-cone drill. Check back this week for any additional supplemental draft news and for the results on Thursday. > http://www.nfl.com/news/story/9447397
I'd like to get your opinion on this Kelly. You always seem to post "news" but never seem give your opinion about the topic unless asked. Don't get me wrong, I'm appreciative for the information, but how do you feel about this? How do you think it will affect us? Is there a player you like? What's your opinion? Looking forward to hearing back. BTW, is that Lisa Lobe?
Jets | Team a dark horse to select Brooks? Wed, 12 Jul 2006 16:57:00 -0700 John Murphy, of Yahoo Sports, reports the New York Jets could be a dark horse candidate to select Virginia LB Ahmad Brooks in the NFL Supplemental Draft Thursday, July 13. They have the luxury of using one of their two 2007 second-round choices to select Brooks. -------------------------------------------------------------- > > > i hope we do NOT select/draft brooks.i don't think our new coach will. because : - 1. " character issues " - 2. " injury issues " cheers
SUPPLEMENTAL DRAFT TODAY The annual Supplemental Draft unfolds today, with seven players in the mix. The most recognizable candidate is former Virginia linebacker Ahmad Brooks, who was kicked out of school following an injury-shortened 2005 season. Considered by some scouts as one of the top linebacking prospects in years, the concern is whether Brooks can put behind him the demons that resulted in his dismissal from the Cavaliers. As one league source told us, "You don't know whether you're getting Lawrence Taylor or Lawrence Phillips." And there continue to be concerns regarding Brooks' inability during his Pro Day workout to perform some of the running drills without specific and explicit instruction on how to do so -- even though he had been working with a trainer to get ready for the session for weeks. There also is confusion as to the number of teams that attended the workout. We initially heard that everyone but the Bears showed up. Gil Brandt reported that everyone but the Vikings was there. Brooks' agent said that only 22 teams were present. We've since confirmed that the Bears weren't there, even though the agent claims the Bears are interested. We've also confirmed that the Vikings weren't there either, since they don't think he fits in their system and they are concerned about his history. Now, Giants G.M. Ernie Accorsi says that only 18 teams were present. We also continue to hear that Brooks' former coach at Virginia, Al Groh, isn't doing Brooks any favors by giving his NFL contacts bad reviews regarding the player. Moreover, Brooks has had trouble with his weight. Though he got it under control in time for his Pro Day, the crash course to drop pounds might have left him weaker for the workout than he should have been. In the end, though, none of it will stop him from getting drafted; he's got too much potential to ignore. Our guess? He'll go in the late fourth or early fifth round. The most likely candidates are the 49ers, Dolphins, and Giants. From the sound of things he doesn't have what we are looking for so don't hold your breath for this guy.
i want ahmad brooks on the jets to be honest, call me stupid. but he has more talent than any "mangini guy" does. and i understand the concept of players with headsmarts and high character guys allow you to milk the maximum amount of talent out of a minimum grade prospect, but ive watched this guy play, what he can do is just down right nasty. if we could get him for a 3rd rder its definitely worth it. im sorry, but if he didnt have his his "issues" hed be labeled best LB of this yrs class. i wouldnt expect mangini to take the chance on him, but that could be a big mistake. especially if miami takes him. we as jets fans can make all the criminal marcus vick references we want if miami takes him, too bad we'll have to see him on game day. then again it could be a good move passing on him, but id rather lose a 3rd pick (having 2 2nd rders next yr) if it could pay off by bringing us a 1st rd quality player in Brooks.
Well, they are not shying away from troubled players. Odell Thurman, Chris Henry, Ahmad Brooks. I think they may have a couple others in trouble with the law, as well.
I found this quite helpfull. If anyone knows Brooks , D'Brick I'm sure will have had some imput. http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/features/06suppdraft.html
Brooks is gone I'm pissed. I think that this guy was awesome. I watched a lot of Virginia Games and he was all over the field. I hope Groh just gave him a bad review and that is why the jets didn't go after him. I am a little sick of the whole "Mangini Guy" thing already. I feel like we are getting mediocre players because of it. It makes me think of a quote from Bobby Bowden in '99 or 2000 when they won the National Championship with Peter Warrick getting in trouble. He said "if smart, good character players were all it took to win football games, then Army and Navy would be playing for the national championship every year."
Man, those Bengals had raelly better hope they've got some people in there that can keep those bad seeds in line. Frankly, I'm disappointed we didn't take a chance on him, but as long as he's not in the AFC East I don't care.
The six factors for ranking football players used by the Dallas Cowboys in the 1960s. They built their great team by drafting players who fit this mold: 1. Character 2. Quickness and body control (agility and balance) 3. Competitiveness and aggressiveness 4. Mental alertness (The Cowboys determined that the best football players had IQs between 94 and 120.) 5. Strength and explosion (factoring quickness into strength) 6. Speed
I really don't think we needed him though.....but if he turns out to be half decent a 3rd rounder is a pretty good deal.
