The same can be said about most teams in the league with regards to old drafts. I only care about the last few years, and they've been solid. I'm satisfied.
While what U say is 100% correct the blame actually falls on Woody shoulders for hiring B/way in the 1st place :jets:
gholston was the worst pick i have ever seen in the draft. the jets had many many head scratchers.... wtf are they thinking drafting dave cadigan? roger vick? those are 2 that really stood out as this makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. robertson wasnt a terrible player it was only absolutely horrible because it was a complete jackass move to make as stated above.
Not much thought was given to this list, since they left off..... 1) Ron Faurot. Arkansas DL - We took him at 16 in the 84? draft. We used the 1st round poick we got from the Saints for Richard Todd. 2) What about Mike Haight - OT - Iowa? At least Thomas was somewhat productive. I still will defend this pick by Jimmy Johnson saying had they had a Top 5 pick that year they would have taken Thomas over Emmitt Smith. Dallas, among many other teams, had Thomas by far the best RB.
Doesn't Roger Vick still hold the dubious mark of having the worst score ever on the Wunderlick test???
well in 2005 some geniuses thought the jets were just a placekicker away from the SB..... i guess it really was a kicker, a head coach, and GM. gotta agree with notion that VG is number one. i think having thomas as one carries some weight cause that was steinbergs 1st pick and it was a fresh new football regime. nowadays if u have that hi a pick with a new regime - u are not taking RB. u are looking at OL, QB, or moving down. man i bitched and moaned when they took thomas - especially with guys like seau and kennedy there. jil
I've had this argument a good 500 times on this board....I'm just not sure how one can consider D rob a bust. A poor draft day decision? Sure. A failure to live up to expectations? No doubt. But w/ guys like Haight, Gholston,Vick,Lam Jones and others who produced far less than D rob...perhaps I just don't use the term "bust" as loosely as others. Look at the DL position for this franchise before D'rob's arrival. Maurice Anderson,Tom Barndt,Josh Evans, an old Chester Mcglockton, etc. It was a mess. At the very least D rob started from day 1 and provided some stability at a problematic yet crucial position for a good 5 years. There were countless articles written about how much respect he commanded in the jets locker room and throughout the league..yet people refused to back off the guy. He had some very good games in a Jets uniform, and contributed more in single games than many jet "busts" did in their entire career. As for the workout warrior argument, draftniks on here have proven this untrue time and time again, but the masses refuse to acknowledge it. D rob was a late declare, coming in at the absolute deadline. Most draft sites and experts including Mel Kiper had him slated as a top 20 pick well before the combine ever occured. The combine did launch him into a consensus top 5...but this talk of him being a complete unknown before his workouts is just completely untrue. W/ that said, Bradway knew about the degenerative knee condition which proved to be d'rob's downfall. No way should he have moved up w/ those 2 first rounders....bad pick..but not a true player bust.
Gholston was the worst. It was just a terrible pick overall. I know we were in a tough spot at number 6 that season, and probably tried to trade out, but they had to have seen that he wasn't as advertised. I know they have private workouts and all that, and I'm sure the Jets brought him in. I remember from the very first training camp reports from that year, the beat writers were all saying Gholston looked terrible out there. How could the scouts not see this in the one on one workouts? At least DSlob started for us and made a few plays for us.
That's grossly unfair to Kotite. The guy averaged more than 10 yards per catch and one TD per season for his career. And he coached the Eagles into the playoffs at least once. He's a fucking Hall of Famer compared to Gholston.
Kurt, the argument always comes back to what we gave up for him. He was 4th overall and we traded 2 pretty good draft picks to get him. And he NEVER produced like a 4th overall pick is expected to. I don't care who was drafted before or after him, a guy selected that early, and for what we gave up to get him, either plays like an elite player or he's a bust. Did he produce? Absolutely, as kind of a role-player who stood out on about 5 plays a year. But he's still a bust.
I just don't use the term bust as loosely as others. To me,a bust is someone that contributed very little or nothing on the field and/or was a disaster off the field...while also costing the given franchise a high draft pick(s) and capital. Ryan leaf, Jamarcus Russell,Vernon Gholston,Ki-Jana carter and Steve Emtman were busts. A guy that was solid at his position for 5+ years and pretty much started from day 1...is not a bust
Living up to expectations and not doing anything are two completely different things. Yes we gave up a ton to get Dslob but it's not like was invisible. Should he have been a pro bowler for what we gave up for him? Absolutely but he was a solid player who was just drafted too high. As far as Ghost.. 4 years and the guy gave us nothing. Not a sack, not forced fumble, not a recovery. The guy from what I understand had 9 million reasons to give us something this year and didn't. I'd be curious to see if he even recorded 10 tackles in his entire career. Ghost has to not only be the Jets biggest bust but one of the biggest in NFL history. Thomas doesn't even compare. I just keep thinking Anthony Munoz and Bruce Matthews.... uggh the humanity. Edit: Ghost had 21 career tackles in 3 seasons....Wow just wow.
This may not be on "The Biggest Bust" list ... but for me the most annoying pick by far was wasting the 31st pick in 1996 on the immortal Alex Van Dyke. Our recieving corps was a disaster so we grabbed Keyshawn with the #1 pick that year ... and then Parcells makes the bonehead move of trying to look smarter than everyone else by drafting Van Dyke at #31 while Amani Toomer was still on the board. The Giants grabbed him at #34 and the rest is history. How much better would our offense have been with Keyshawn and Toomer as our wideouts, Chrebet in the slot and Curtis Martin running the ball? I was furious every time I saw Toomer making big ctaches for the Giants the rest of his career. It still gets me pissed when I think about it.
Not sure why Drob wouldn't fit that category. He cost us TWO first rounders, millions in contract, and gave us just 5 years of below average service at best. Its not like he was the #1 bust in the NFL. #6 bust for the Jets is about right. Also, Anthony Becht is a top 10 bust for the Jets. Not sure if he'd make it in the top 5.
Emtman blew out his knee. Until the injury he was a very good player. He also had 8 sacks compared to zero for Gholsten.
Ghost is the worst, the other players actually got on the field and contributed a little something. Robertson had sacks, and started 16 games. Thomas started most of the games for one season. He wasn't great, he wasn't even good, but he at least started in the NFL. Ghost was the worst. Never had a sack. Never had a start. I never stopped rooting for Ghost or hoping he'd produce but in retrospect he was much worse than either Robertson or Blair Thomas.
