http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/story/434129p-365755c.html Jets go deep for Ramsey BY RICH CIMINI DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Tuesday, July 11th, 2006 Adding some stability to their long-term quarterback situation, the Jets quietly extended the contract of newcomer Patrick Ramsey, who will compete with Chad Pennington for the starting job in training camp. Ramsey, acquired in a March trade with the Redskins, was due to become an unrestricted free agent after the upcoming season, but he received a one-year, $2.1 million extension through 2007. That includes a $1.4 million roster bonus, payable in March - the same time Pennington is due a $2 million roster bonus. It's unlikely that both quarterbacks will be back in 2007, especially if rookie Kellen Clemens shows promise, setting the stage for a Pennington-or-Ramsey decision next offseason. In exchange for postponing his free-agent year, Ramsey got a small guarantee from the Jets, receiving $250,000 of his nonguaranteed base salary for this season ($1.7 million) in the form of a roster bonus that was paid June 30. It's possible that Ramsey, who arrived from the Redskins with only one year left on his first NFL contract, was concerned about making the team after a somewhat disappointing performance in last month's minicamp. The Jets have one of the most unstable quarterback situations in the league, with Pennington trying to rebound from his second shoulder surgery and Ramsey attempting to restart his career after a disappointing run in Washington. Backup Brooks Bollinger, hardly a lock to make the team, will be an unrestricted free agent after the season. Meanwhile, the Jets have begun preliminary talks with their top pick, left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson, the fourth player taken in the draft.
Well, this does not bode well for Penny now. Why make this move if they think Penny shows at least promise? Looks like Bolly is gone too then. Crap. So we will be stuck with Ramsey? I sure hope Clemmens is a great QB, and that he can stay healthy too.
that's def'n bad news for bollywood. Lets hope the CS see something we don't in this guy, all reports show him as being the worst of the four so far but I guess he just needs more time to adjust.... They didn't break the bank on the extension though....so having patrick ramsey for a 3rd stringer isn't that bad.....
I don't view Ramsey as a third string this year. He is, at worst, a second stringer. Clemens won't be ready to play until 2007. And Rich C is right. Either Pennington or Ramsey won't be a Jet in 2007. And with this kind of money tied up in the position for 2006, Bollinger won't be a Jet this year. It's kind of a shame because he may be a Ray Lucas type. But the Jets feel Ramsey is an upgrade over Bollinger which he may be. Steve Spurrier chose this guy and then never grasped NFL Protection schemes which is a bit ridiculous considering how much he likes to "pitch it around".
Looks like this was done to either 1) force the decision between Penny and Ramsey next year, or 2) without knowing the numbers, possibly to clear a small amount of cap space to help get the rookies signed -
I love the move. IT accomplishes a couple of things. 1) Hopefully it will get Ramsey to settle down and play within himself instead of trying to impress the coaches and try to "make the team" and 2) It gives us bargaining power next year whether we want to keep Chad or Ramsey. I wish this didn't come at Bollywood's expense, but hey, keeping four QBs is not unheard of.
It's a no-lose - if Ramsay plays and plays well we don't need to outbid anyone to keep him next year, if he sucks or doesn't see the field we can cut him at no cost.
its one mini camp under a new offense, I like this move. Plus the media is just looking to write off ramsey so they can make a ultimate youth story about clemens and our staff. and im not saying i expect ramsey to be some great savior, but if Penny goes down, Let Ramsey try to prove something while Clemens learns. I dont wanna see Clemens in unless its the last few games of the season or hes forced to start. Although I would epect Clemens to be the starter by next yr. At least if these minicamp circle jerk articles have any validity
Exactly, we aren't paying him hardly any of the money in the contract unless he is on the team next year. If he sucks, peace out. If Pennington is healthy, peace out. If not, welcome back Patrick!
good point. even tho people call tannebaum "not a football guy", theres little doubt that hes not a financial wiz-kid.
I'd be really comforted if I were the Bengals and Palmer can't come back in time. I'd be really comforted if I were the Titans and had to rely on Volek and Vince Young. I'd be really comforted if I were the Raiders and I had to rely on Aaron Brooks. I'd be really comforted if I were the Cleveland Browns, the Buffalo Bills, the Chicago Bears, the San Diego Chargers. Put in perspective, champ.
good point, BUT; Bengals: have a great RB and WRs and great defense Titans: same boat as Jets Raiders: they do have a solid RB and Randy Moss, unlike the Jets Bears: went to the playoffs with their "QB Problem" Browns: Frye showed he can play last season, at least they know who their starter is entering camp Bills: same boat as Jets
Seems like a smart move to make for the Jets. It will be Pennington or Ramsey leaving in 2007. My guess is that Pennington will be gone after this season. And then Clemens and whoever stays will battle for the job.
