With the threads on here about the Jets signing Garrett McIntyre, got me thinking about the Cameron Wake situation in Miami.

Fin fans are all super excited about how well he panned out, but can they really afford to keep him? The guy lead the nfl in sacks, and is averaging 1.23 million a year. He should easily be taking in at least 8 times that.

With their monster deals theyve given out to Dansby and Marshall, and add in the fact that they have to go out and get a QB (possibly overpaying someone like Kolb or McNabb) do you think Wake really has a future with that team?

I know hes locked into a contract for at least the next 2 years at a low rate, but the guy is 29 so id be shocked if he doesnt start kicking and screaming for his big contract before his career is over. I mean theres no way this guy agrees to just wait until hes 32 before going after a payday.

Eitherway its nice seeing another afc east team having looming shitty salary cap issues suddenly making our position not seem so bad.

I don't know their cap situation, but I'd expect them to sign him long term. They'll cut others if they have to, you dont let passrushers walk. I was wrong about this guy.

They've already started new contract talks with him. The poster above is right, they would let just about anybody go before a pass rusher like that

    This isnt the NBA though.

You cant have a handful of superstars and have the rest of your team having gaping holes (exception being QB).

And their big contract guys surely have so much guarenteed money tied up in their deals that they simply cant afford to cut them.

I mean the amount of money that Long, Dansby, and Marshall command is already a staggering number.

Its over 150 million between the 3 of them. I think Longs contract escalates up to like 12 million a year this year too

I just dont see how they can get a QB, keep those 3, AND make Wake happy.

They have had either the #1 or #2 highest team salary in the nfl the last two years so I dont think they have too much free cap anyway

Especially since they dont have their own Tanny. And oh now they desperately need a HB too, so I wouldnt be expecting Deangello Williams heading their way anymore

There aren't a whole lot of gaping holes on the team. QB and interior o-line were the main problems last year.

I don't see RB being as much of a problem simply because the o-line play was so bad.

And the D improved to 6th in the league last year so as long as we draft well there we should be ok

There arent many gaping holes now.

But unless Wake decides to be the most underpayed player in the NFL some people HAVE to be let go so you can afford him.

And at least one of your 2 RBs wont be back, possibly neither.

Which leaves yet another hole to be filled.

How well do you know their cap situation? Every team has dead weight they can cut, bad contracts they can get rid of, and guys they don't want to but are able to cut. Expect them to find a way to extend Wake, just like you should expect the NYJ to bring back 3 of Cro/DH/BE/Santonio.

Sure, Wake will push for a new deal this off-season but he has to realize the Dolphins own his right for two more years... if he bitches too much he may ultimately never play another down until he's 32.

What's going to happen is in the end he'll sign a better deal but won't get as much money as he would've made via FA.

That said the Dolphins are run by a bunch of retards so we shouldn't lose hope in them doing something stupid.

Id say theres NO chance he doesnt play until hes 32.

Its not like hes making 10 million asking for 15. The guy lead the nfl in sacks and is making 1 million a year.

So if the Fins cant make him happy, they can easily trade him. He is under contract after all. And they could get back one of those 2nd round picks they gave up for Marshall.

I think ultimately that would be a huge loss for the fins losing their best pass rusher and getting a draft pick theyll probably bust on but at least they can afford it.

Like a poster said earlier, without knowing the cap numbers the idea of us letting Wake go is especially ridiculous.

We would trade Marshall before we would let Wake walk

Because there are plenty of teams who want to trade for a troubled WR who just signed a 50 million dollar contract half of which is guaranteed that has 4 years left on it after having a poor season with only 3 receiving TDs, right ?

The idea isnt that you have to let Wake go, its that you guys have a ton of massive contracts that will make keeping Wake difficult.

Especially since your team has huge needs at 2 of the most important positions QB and HB.

I'd imagine the Dolphins would consider trading Marshall irrespective of Wake's situation, the amount of money he's getting to be an under-performing prima donna has to make you think about trading him if someone's prepared to take him off your hands. I know it's apparently all Chad Henne's fault that Marshall isn't happy, but if you bring in Kolb or McNabb and find that Marshall doesn't like them either you're fucked.

He is arguably the most important player on that defense. Am I missing something that they are going to let him go? They will probably extend and give him a raise once the CBA is hammered out.
