Sanchez is entering his third year as a starting QB... and probably for the first time he'll be asked to HELP develop some rookie/inexperienced WRs. When he first got into the league (2009) his arsenal was mainly composed of Cotchery (first yr 2004), Stuckey (2007) and Keller (2008 but a year with Favre who loves TEs). After a couple of months the Jets added another experienced WR in Edwards (2005). He also wasn't asked to pass much. In his second year (2010) Sanchez could also rely on Holmes (2006). He started passing more than in year 1. This year it's very likely that his main assets will be Keller and 2 between Edwards, Holmes and Cotchery (B. Smith might still be here but he was never asked to do too much at WR). Considering the increasing importance of the passing game for the Jets those three alone won't cut it. Many elite QBs (Brady, Manning, Roethlisberger, Brees) are very very good in developing young WRs/TEs into useful weapons... maybe not game-breakers but at least solid recievers. Do you think Sanchez will have the ability to do that with either some lesser known prospects that have been in the league a while (Turner and Payne for example) or some players we might draft in the middle/lower rounds? Or would you maybe prefer the Jets to bring in an experienced WR for this year? POSITIVES: Sanchez has got all the mental tools to make those that work close to him better. He's also now the unqestioned leader of the Jets O. He should have a pretty good grasp of the system we play in since he's a smart kid and he's played it for 2 years. NEGATIVES: However the question is wether he's already understood enough of how the NFL works to make it easier for other guys to have success in it. Also if he's already at a point in his career where he can start concentrating on the play of other guys and not only on his... PS Of course if we retain Edwards, Holmes and Cotchery who cares.
How about we allow Sanchez to experience his own breakout year (statistically) first, before we start handing him Henry Ellard's job.
If Mark Sanchez starts developing receivers, we could trade Henry Ellard for a third round pick that escalates into a second.
You know what I mean... a QB plays a big part in helping a WR break into the NFL. Please change the title to "help develop"...
I could change the thread title....or....I could watch you get shredded in this thread while I eat my breakfast. decisions decisions.
I ran his thread title thru an online Italian -> English translator. It translates to: "I would like to see Mark Sanchez get Henry Ellard fired".
Asking Sanchez to retool his WR corps for the 3rd time (aside from bringing in a young 4th WR) would be a mistake, IMO, so I'm going for
If Holmes or Edwards leave then I don't think he is going to developing anything as much as the coaching staff is going to have to find someone who can play the slot.
the short answer to the op's original question is no. Sanchez is still finding out how to play the game. He is not ready to carry a group of inexperienced receivers. If we can keep his core of receivers around for another one-two years, Sanchez will be able to make the others around him better, but until Sanchez has a breakout year he won't be mentally prepared to do that. It might be quite a while before he is ready to do so.
I'm sure he could if it came down to it, he'll pay for his young WRs to attend a Jet WR camp like last summer and work on chemistry I do think however he needs to work on himself and his cons as a QB before he goes about helping others, in a sense he needs to perfect his own craft, dude still has some crappy footwork when delivering passes sometimes (Dolphins game pt 2 a prime example, God awful position when throwing passes) I'd rather have Sanchez focus on himself and what he needs to do, we need him to become much more accurate first before he can help other WRs (his goal for the off-season should be to become more accurate on all levels of throwing - short, med and long distance throws ... get that % up to about 58-60% for the season) So now that I think about it, he has the ability, but there isn't time for that right now
I think he means help the young wide receivers we don't have and may not get. In that case, I'm not sure. I think he may be able to teach young girls..... nevermind.
Man...he's fuckin 24 years old. When Aaron Rodgers was Mark's age he was a rookie backing up Brett Favre. Just because he's ahead of the game in terms of development doesn't mean he's at a point where we can ask him to start bringing along other people. Let him get a better grasp on his own position first.
