If Cro had the ability to bump a receiver off of his route within 5 of the LOS and then recover, the lack of a pass rush probably would not have been as crippling to our passing game. He spent what seemed like the majority of the season 10 yards off the LOS on passing downs.
Yeah, and that's why teams stopped going long on him so much and started using comeback routes and double moves to make him look like a rookie. Moss ran one effective route in 2010 - a 9 route (fly pattern). That's probably the only route that I've seen Cro cover confidently. He also was the guy I saw slipping on turf more than anyone else on the field. That seems like a combo of not reading routes and also not picking the right cleats. The latter is something that requires preparation, and prep is something that doesn't seem to be too high on Cro's list of priorities. Yes, he's really fast, and yes he can jump. But if he hasn't bothered to improve his technique by now, at this stage of his career, in a contract year... I have no use for him. Maybe the Jets keep him and maybe he gets it together, but I doubt both of those things happen. And I think I'll skip the whole 'I don't like to tackle' thing, since that has been covered ad-naus before he even got here. We knew what was coming in that department. Plus... baby mommas and unpaid child support aside, the guy is a fucking retard. That's too many strikes against him as far as I'm concerned.
At this point in his career you have to wonder if he'll ever be able to do that tough... In some games he shows some willingness but overall it's just not the way he plays the game. i think Wilson would be much better in doing that... the problem is, right after he disegnages the WR will he still be able to cover him (or turn his fucking head)?
You do realize he's not responsible for the coverage calls, right? If he's 10 yards off the line of scrimmage, it's because Rex put him there. In situations in which he was CALLED to play on the line, I was impressed with the way he played bump and run. Saying "it's just not the way HE plays the game" ignores the way the game is actually played...and called. He's a young corner. His primary responsibility in man coverage at this point is to keep his eyes on the receiver. Not getting his head turned around in time is a sign that he's young, still learning, and not yet used to the subtleties that he'll start to pick up on in receivers' actions when the ball is in the air. It's really unsurprising given the competition he faced at Boise State that he's been fooled this season by receivers. Those claiming it's something he's simply incapable of doing are ignoring (or simply don't grasp) the circumstances of the situation.
It is one of the easiest thing in the world to create children. But really who really cares how many kids he has from different woman. All that matters is his play on the field :jets:
1) In some games he was very willing but overall you got the impression Rex made him play that far away from the LOS not because he wanted but because he had to. I remember a ton of games where he was starting at the LOS and seemed to forget the word "bump". Usually against weaker opponents where, I suppose, he wasn't motivated... 2) Go look at my other posts about Wilson. I'm a fan of him and of giving him time and faith. But, altough i think he will, I wonder WHEN he'll be a reliable corner. I hope next season is it... except for rare cases (McCourty) the first year is always hard for CBs. Especially on a team that plays a lot of man-to-man.
So, your argument is based on your perception of what Rex was thinking, rather than simply on what's observable fact. Funny, but useless unless you have some heretofore unexpressed insight into Rex's mind. Before you said "it's simply not how he plays the game", as though it were entirely his fault and that he was incapable of doing so. Now it's a perceived motivation issue. Revis doesn't always get a bump at the line, even though it's most certainly a key to his success. Style of coverage is dictated by the CS. Unless you're on the sidelines, or can quote someone who is, please don't tell me about 'impressions'. Your use of profanity to describe his ability to get his head around certainly didn't convey faith and respect. You probably noticed as well that Wilson played the vast majority of snaps 10 yards off the line. Or maybe you didn't.
Jesus.... 1) I noticed (not percepted) that in some games he was starting NEAR the los... after missing a couple of "bumps" Rex adjusted the schemes to make him play 10 yds away. My thinking is that Rex did that because Cro wasn't taking advantage of playing near the los... is it so delusional? A good coach has to take advantage of the strong suits of his team, and in Cro's case it means not having him right up the los. Cro played well near the los when he was very motivated, which means games like the NE play-off one... when he gets his shit together he can actually be physical... it's just that he doesn't seem motivated enough game in game out to be consistent in doing it. 2) Oh I'm sorry... can't I believe Wilson will become a good CB and get frustrated with him for drawing penalties at the same time!? The fact I get pissed when a rookie commits a penalty doesn't mean I automatically believe he'll never be a good NFL player. I honestly don't remember that but Wilson is a very physical player and I'm sure he'll have no problem getting physical with a WR if requested. 3) WTF, take your frustrations back to the bullshit or TT forum...
No need to get snippy in here. I'm just attacking you in here, I'm just pointing out how wrong you are. If you'd like to keep changing your argument every time I respond, that's fine, but it doesn't mask your original statement. 1) You state that "A good coach has to take advantage of the strong suits of his team, and in Cro's case it means not having him right up the los." Anyone who has watched Cro's career knows that having him off the LOS is exactly where you DON'T want him to be. Go back and watch games. The vast majority of big gains against him came with him playing off the line, something Rex called for less and less as the season wore on, and then only in certain situations. Your perception--yes, perception--is based strictly on a belief that you know exactly what Rex is thinking and the reasons for his schemes. You don't. None of us do. It's pure hubris to think otherwise, but the 'patterns' that you'd like to see simply don't exist. It also seems odd that you in one statement state that Cro's strength is not playing up at the LOS, and then in the next state that he plays well there when motivated. Aside from the guesswork involved in trying to get into Cro's head (which you seem to possess along with your uncanny psychological connection to Rex), you seem to feel that he is most successful when he's playing well in bump and run. If that's the case, why don't you feel that's a strong suit? Does Rex strike you as the type of coach to give in to the whims of his players, or the type to correct motivational flaws? I'm asking because you clearly know his psyche better than I do. 2) No need to apologize. People make mistakes. However, this is the first time you've mentioned penalties. Obviously, I assume this is in reference to the issue of turning his head around. You can be frustrated, but it's awfully silly to have such vehement expectations and then lose them immediately. Your original post conveyed such frustration for his inability to read receivers better (again, a product of the increased level of play even at subtle levels from the WAC to the NFL), and then you proclaim to be exercising patience with him. It seems inconsistent and belies the understanding you claim to have. As far as his physicality, I agree. However, if you don't recall watching him play off the LOS so frequently, I have to question how much of his game you actually watched, and therefore must ask where your impression of his physicality comes from. Do they show much Boise St. football in Italy? I'm asking out of genuine curiosity. 3) It doesn't seem like I'm the one getting frustrated here. If all you can muster is blasphemy and profanity, perhaps you should also consider a trip to the TT forum. This forum is for the discussion of football, which is what I thought we were doing.
Yes, I'm getting frustated by you... not for your opinions on football but because I think you're costantly trying to go after me... and in this discussion you're distorting what I'm saying. 1) I don't recall Wilson playing off the LOS because I don't remember him playing snaps on the edge much... when you play inside you'll almost always play off the LOS. But when he was on the WR he defended in a very physical manner... which makes me think he'll be very good in a bump-and-run off the edge system like ours... 2) Cromartie CAN bump-and-run. He's got the strength and skills. However, if YOU'VE followed Cromarties career, his problem isn't strength or skills but his head. In his Chargers days he never played hard (remember the missed tackle vs the Jets? That's the epitome of Cromartie's on the field approach). Thank god (and by god I mean Rex) with the Jets he wasn't always so scared of tackling and in games that counted/when Rex lit a fire under his ass he was WILLING to bump the WR off his route. When he does that he is a very good corner... but he doesn't do it often, let alone regularly.
Oh my god this site has an Ignore list!?!?!?!?!?!? First the TT forum and now this!? thank you creator of TGG!!!!!
If you couldn't ignore him before what makes you think the ignore list is going to help you? You still see that he posted and all it takes is one click to see the post. You won't be able to help yourself.
I couldn't ignore him because I was pissed off by most of what he wrote... I don't read it, I don't get pissed off, I ignore him.
This was one of the most frustrating things for me. When he did crowd the LOS he played pretty tight coverage. When he played off coverage he was beaten fairly easily.
Your analysis is good but the bolded is the root of it. This guy is lacking in the noggin. I still think for a 2nd CB the guy is pretty good. Getting one lockdown guy is difficult enough. My opinion does change if he wants huge money..........
