Jets GM on Mark Sanchez, LT, wideouts By Rich Cimini ESPNNewYork.com Shoulder surgery still is a possibility for Mark Sanchez. LaDainian Tomlinson is expected to return in 2011. Brian Schottenheimer isn't going anywhere. David Harris could get the franchise tag. Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards are on the priority list. All this according to New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum, who conducted his end-of-the-season address Friday afternoon. The Jets, who fell one game short of the Super Bowl, have several key decisions to make in the offseason. The uncertain labor situation is complicating matters, but Tannenbaum indicated he'd like to re-sign Holmes, Edwards, Harris and Antonio Cromartie. Tannenbaum said he expected Tomlinson to be back, but he indicated "things could change." He gave the same assessment of Jason Taylor, but he sounded less certain. The GM was non-committal on older players such as Kris Jenkins, Tony Richardson and Damien Woody. Tannenbaum gave the impression he's ready to cut bait with Vernon Gholston, the disappointing former No. 1 pick. "He's been given his fair share of opportunities," Tannenbaum said of Gholston, who has no sacks in three season. "It could be time to move on, but we're not ready to say that yet. ... Vern is a guy we'll take a long look at and move on from there." The most pressing issue is Sanchez's right shoulder, which he hurt last month. Sanchez said Monday that it's feeling better and that he hopes to avoid surgery, but Tannenbaum wasn't ready to say that yet. Sanchez already has been examined by the team doctors, but he will seek additional opinions. Tannenbaum wants a decision soon. "In my mind, sooner than later, because if you're going to have a procedure, you'd like to get going on it sooner than later so you can start the rehab process," he said. Tannenbaum declined to comment on speculation that the Jets might pursue former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress when he's released from prison in June. He also said a decision hasn't been made on the future of Sal Alosi, the suspended strength and conditioning coach who tripped a Miami Dolphins player on the sideline.
I don't much care what others think of the team and if the management think they can tame players with bad reputations then I trust them, but I can well live without the Jets signing Burress. The guy's dumber than a box of rocks.
I don't have much faith in what tannenbaum says because he says it for the fans and media, he doesn't tip his hat to what he's really up to - if you remember he said the same stuff about Leon Washington last year that we were going to keep him blah blah blah.
According to Manish Mehta, Tanny also said he expects Wilson and Marcus Dixon to play major roles next year. I think Shaun Ellis is all but gone. Hopefully Cro can come back and Wilson plays the COleman role.
I don't think this necessarily means Ellis is gone - if Trevor Pryce and Kris Jenkins are both gone, Dixon will get some snaps even if Ellis stays. Ellis deserves to stick around based on his play this year unless we can get someone who is a big upgrade.
Yeah and he went to prison...look at Vick he's not the same idiot he was in Atlanta. And his main asset is his height, he may have lost a bit of his speed but that was mediocre to begin with and I don't think he got any shorter in prison. If we lose one of the WRs, Burress is worth it as a 1-2 year stopgap. Wasn't he a pretty good run blocker too?
Tannenbaum is giving all the usual GM talking points. He never really gives up any useful information. Not that I'd want him to though.
Can someone look up to see how much money we save by not having woody, gholston, JT, and Jenkins on our books. I think Jenkins will end up on our team but not at the number he is being owed right now.
Kris Jenkins: saves $4,600,000 Bryan Thomas: saves $3,700,000 Damien Woody saves $3,240,000 Jason Taylor: saves $2,275,000 Vernon LOLston: $401,666
There's no way Jenkins comes back for that much money. He's been a terrible investment so far, and I fully expect Woody and Tanny to cut him loose.
Vick is forever going to be the poster child for rehabilitation, but my issue with Burress is not his offences or his abilities, it's the fact that he's fucking stupid and he's always going to be one dumbass move away from a swift return to chokey. I'd rather a team making a serious bid for a Superbowl wasn't relying on him, especially when both of our other receivers are similarly close to being unexpected unavailable on game day. I'd prefer Moss to Burress and I don't want him either.
He'll also be 34 after having been out of football for two years. Patrick Turner is probably better at this point. Seriously.
Well there's also a good chance Jenkins could come back at a reduced salary. Nobody is going to pay him that much next year based on his 2 injuries.
Cimini's little analysis shows much of a douchebag hack fucking writer he is Faggot I'm willing to bet he would come back on an incentive heavy contract. Maybe like a million or 2 guaranteed with more in incentives tied to his playing time. I would hope so. His cap hit is enormous. He's gonna be a Jet for a very long time and he's going to make a ton of money as a Jet (175-200 million from contracts, more through endorsements) so there's no reason why he can't move some of his money into future bonuses.
I wouldn't say he's been a terrible investment, that one dominant year he had was probably worth the 3rd and 5th alone.
