This blog warms my heart: http://joeposnanski.si.com/2011/01/17/the-payoff-of-playoffs/ The best part :
How on Earth could you even insinuate that the Jets victory was unfair? That region of America knows and deserves nothing regarding football.
So we should have no playoffs. Team with the most wins after 16 games wins. If there is a tie the team with the tallest receiver wins.
So I guess those 3 superbowl wins* are even less legit now that they've discovered how unfair the system is.
Shit, how unfair, that the Jets went to there house having played all those game with no break,,,, and Beat them soundly and made them look silly and lost all day....That's why you save your best for last !!!!!!!!
Doubt it. Joe Posnanski is known for, in the baseball community, an extraordinary devotion to unbiased opinion based on solid factual research, as opposed to writers who primarily write based on their 'gut opinion'. One of the most respected writers among people who pay attention to sabermetrics or detailed analysis of sports. And he has no particular affiliation to Boston of any kind. I think that the point of this blog was to highlight the inadequacy of delineating any home field advantage - explaining the ways in which bye teams no longer have the kind of advantage that they used to. He doesn't say at any point that the Jets win is unfair. The point of his article isn't to bash the Jets, or say that the Patriots deserved to be the super bowl champions. His point was: And the quote includes: So, yeah. It actually seems like, if anything, he was happy that the Patriots lost. Misleading thread title to say the least.
Why even address it then? The only flaw with the playoff system is seeding but that's irrelevant now since we would be @ Pittsburgh Sunday even if we were seeded 4 instead of 6.
Alright how about we have no playoffs. The team with the best record from each conference automatically goes to the Super Bowl. This ISNT THE FUCK BCS COLLEGE SHIT, THIS IS THE NFL. We have PLAYOFFS. be happy. All i ever hear is how people in college bitching they dont have playoffs, PLALYOFFS ARE GOOD. BE HAPPY.
He says it's flawed because the Seahawks had home field advantage, while two ten win teams didn't get into the playoffs. Which is a legit concern. But his main points are that the playoffs are random, that the influence of wild card teams have drastically changed since the four-division system has come into place, and to examine some reasons why that might be the case.
