be tomorrow's game vs. NE. Rex has been calling tomorrow's division tilt as the 2nd biggest game in Jets history, but you can't put a 2nd round game against a league championship game that sent the team to the Super Bowl. No. The Jets 27-23 defeat of the Oakland Raiders--at home at Shea Stadium--to win the American Football League Title and advance to Super Bowl III will always be the #2 Game until the Jets win the next Super Bowl. However, tomorrow's victory against the Patriots can be compared and compete with our other 3 divisional round wins as the 3rd best victory in NYJ history. The competitors are: --1982 Jets 14, Raiders 10 [Our deepest run in the playoffs in more than 14 years] --1998 Jets 34, Jaguars 24 [Our 2nd seed home win which was a party from start to finish] --2009 Jets 17, Chargers 14 [And unexpected thrill ride on the arm of our rookie QB] For me, Jets/Raiders from January 1983 has always been the pick. However, I must admit that tomorrow's shellacking of the Pats by the Jets will eclipse Richard Todd's long pass to Wesley Walker and Lance Mehl's 2 late INTs. --2010 Jets 32, Patriots 23
2nd biggest game will be: Super Bowl I and Super Bowl II winner vs. Super Bowl III winner? Could be written in the stars.....
I disagree. A win tomorrow symbolizes the death of SOJ, and a new era in Jets football where we no longer take a back seat to the giants, and where we prove that we are the best team in the afc east for years to come. Not to mention it lets people know that with Rex in town we are competing for the superbowl every single year from now on
How would one win make you the best team in the AFC east for years to come? You guys aren't really set for the future but the Pats are.
You guys are set for the future ? Take away Tom Brady (almost 34) and Belichick (almost 60) and your team isnt making the playoff for years. And considering that both of these guys dont exactly have that much longer. Not to mention your 2 best wrs is a tiny white guy (short careers) and an old guy. Your HBs are all awful as well. You got a young defense with some impressive players, but lets be honest all your talent is heading out the door. In 4-5 years you guys wont even be thinking playoffs anymore. Where as the Jets have 3 young stud healthy wrs, young healthy franchise qb, young AMAZING Oline, Young stud secondary, young top 3 MLB, 2 future young hbs, young good fb. Age matters, and it doesnt favor you guys
Don't count them completely out, but yea, Brady is making that team what it is right now. With out him they are a young team, possibly rebuilding, but with a ton of imcoming talent after this draft. If the find thier version of Aaron Rodgers, someone to sit for 3 years and take over, they are going to be very good still in a few seasons.
True but with Belichick also approaching that time, I think thats double trouble for them. Hell I think the Dolphags are gonna be a bigger threat in 5 years than the pats ... Maybe even the Bills I kid
Why are the young players on D heading out, we are in pretty good position relative to the salary cap, who knows how long BB will stay, we could draft a decent/good QB you know. You guys on the other hand can't afford to 2 of the Holmes, Edwards, Harris group....so take two if not all of them away and Sanchez isn't proven yet. I'm not saying you're done but it's not a great position to be in.
i really can't see BB hangin around after brady and chance hurting his legacy. who knows though maybe he'll want to prove the naysayers wrong
Some of those young players on def are solid, and your posiition to the salary cap is excellent. If you have a good draft this year with your extra picks you could look real good. That said your defense still sucks atm, ranked 30th against the pass, cant really stop the run. And in 5 years you will have NO OFFENSE. You got 2 promising tight ends sure, but moving forward you have no wrs, no hbs, no qb and no young stud guys on the oline proven. And you think the Jets are losing 2 of Holmes/Edwards/Harris ? Id say its 50 50 whether we keep 3 of the 3 or two of the 3. And I think EVERYONE on here would be beyond shocked if we dont keep at least 2 of them. So going forward we got a young Revis/Harris/Lowery/Holmes/Brick/Mangold/Greene/Edwards/Keller/Conner then Sanchez who you say is unproven, and an unproven mcknight. What do you guys have ? McCourntney Mayo and Spikes ? One of which had a gruesome injury and the other who got busted for Roids. Tho your offense has its 2 stud TEs, but who knows how much of that is the Brady effect. We all saw what Peyton did to Tamme
Our future - McCourty, Mayo, Spikes, Gronkowski, Hernandez, Chung, Vollmer, Woodhead(?) Some possible solid players - Cunningham, Green-Ellis, Tate, Price(looked good in little action he saw), Meriweather (young enough?), Fletcher(?) And of course the 6 picks we have in the 1st three rounds of the draft.
In my opinion, it all comes down to Brady; he could have 5 good years left and the Pats will be an AFCE contender for that time period if he does. Of the group you listed, I only personally see McCourty and Mayo as stars, the rest I think are just role players or would be without Brady. A lot of the Jets core (Sanchez, Greene/McKnight, Holmes/Edwards if resigned, Brick, Mangold, Keller, Harris if resigned, Revis) is young too and I think there's more star potential in that group (Brick, Mangold, Harris, and Revis are already stars). But it will really depend on Sanchez's development in the end. If he turns into a star, the Jets will be right up there with the Pats as long as Brady's elite.
You really think you can project what a team is going to look like 5 years from now, given today's NFL where teams go from worst to first in a matter of a couple of seasons? Yes, Brady is a generational talent and it is unlikely they could just find someone like that again, but with the way the Patriots manage the salary cap and the draft, they are an organization set up for long-term competitiveness. This outcome of this game means nothing more than one went further in the playoffs this year. You guys are living in a dream world disconnected from the reality of the NFL if you think divisions are always dynastic and last for years on end without change.
So what Tannenbaum is a genius we traded up to get Revis, traded for a pick to get Mangold, traded up to get Sanchez. Mr. T is a very good general manager. I expect him to find a good defensive end for us in this draft and I do not think Kyle Wilson will be a bust.
We need to just make our draft picks count.Like the Revis,Brick and Mangold picks, among others.Time will tell on Wilson.
Patriots are the second(?) youngest team in the NFL. The defense apart from Arrington/Butler is pretty solid, not an all star, but above average when they play together. Patriots only allowed 14 more points than the Jets all season but have quite a few more turn overs. Patriots offensive line is aging and could use help, Vollmer is the future LT, Mankins will hopefully get signed. Welker has a few years, the TEs are staying put, and Green-Ellis was the lone 1k rusher in the AFCE, he is probably sticking around for awhile at RB. Tate has hands of stone and is a poor route runner but very fast and a good KR. All things considered the offense is in decent shape apart from the OL, its one of the best right now but several players careers are near their end. Probably need one more WR depending on how Price develops. Defense is young, fast, opportunistic. Not stingy when it comes to yards like the Jets, Steelers, or Ravens but gets their stops through turnovers, which may as well be a punt on 3rd down. Not much help needed on D, #2 corner is a concern if Bodden doesn't recover from injury and a star pass rusher. I think NE is set for the future, obviously you can barely predict season to season, a lot is subject to change, but as of now they are in better shape than most teams. Brady has expressed desire to play until he's 40, doubtful that happens but 4-5 more years at least isn't exactly a short time.
We need to trade out of the first round, and pickup a mid 2nd and a mid 3rd in the process. Maybe even trade out 1st for a late 2nd, 4th, and a 2nd next year...or something like that. I hope we stockpile picks this year, because we lived the entire year on the edge as far as depth was concerned. We have Coleman coverin the slot receiver, Woody injured, Sanchez injury scare, and trying to call up safeties off the rail tracks. We need some depth on the OL, and draft couple of players for the aging DL. Trading out of the first and picking up a high 2nd and a high 3rd would be ideal, giving us 3 picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Further trading out of high 2nd to a low 2nd, and picking up another low 3rd could be good too. Thats what Mangini did. If we can get 4 picks in round 2 and 3, we can draft a pass rusher with the late 2nd, couple of DLs and a safety with the 3rd rounders. Yeah, Mr. T has been great when he trades up, but I think this is the year we either stay put at worst, or trade down. What I wrote would be ideal, but unlikely. Would love to trade out of our first, for a mid 2nd this year, and a 1st next year. Two first rounders in 2012 could be great ammos for picking up a great pass rusher and or safety if they are not addressed in 2011.
Although games are decided based on points, yards allowed is where you actually find out how good the D is. The advantage that D has is Brady. Brady is a smart QB obviously, but what helps the D are the long drives produced by Brady. If he scores, the opposing teams get the ball around the 25. If he doesn't score, the opposing offense gets it further deeper on most cases. Its those long drivees that allowed your D to not let up many points. Thats why yards allowed can show which D really played well. Twice, Pats scored less than 20, and they lost both times. It helps when your offense puts up 30-45 points in almost every game. Besides, that D had a few good games towards the end of the season. 4 out of the last 5 games, it gave up 20 points. They gave up 293 points in the other 12 games (24+ ppg). Obviously not the most impressive when your offense averaged 32+ PPG. Vollmer covering the blindside isn't an ideal situation to be in. He is decent. Mankins will not be resigned. All bridges were burnt when he skipped 8 paychecks. Welker is a small, shifty and speedy WR. His knee injury slowed him down this year and he will be 30 when he returns next year. The TEs seem great but TD production is mostly due to Brady. BJGE sure did rush for 1k, but again, most of it could be attributed to Brady and the passing success. Rushing for 1k is not a great feat. Jets had two rushers that split the time nearly 50/50, and they both nearly crossed the 1k mark with 15 games each. LT would have had it if he played against Bills. Again, the 13 TDs for BJGE is a product of the offense. I don't even know who Price is, but you guys need TWO WRs. The way Brady plays, he'll even do with what he has. I hate him, but he's good. The D is ok. Yeah its young, but I've already mentioned why I think its an average D, if not below average. The turnovers come from other teams playing from behind, making the D a product of their offense as well. Im pretty sure I am biased in my opinion, but I picked up nearly all your positives, and gave you a reasoning as to why they 'seem' positives. The draft picks have been very good recently, but its too early to tell why. Brady effect is huge. Theres a reason why they say QB is the most important position in the NFL. Unless that franchise can find another gem of a QB, they are not set for the future. You don't have a Ravens 2000 like D where you can live an average QB. I really don't care what Brady's desires are, but he'll be 34 when the next season starts, and I'll give him two good years before his decline becomes apparent. He has given u too much success and it just can't last forever. As for the Jets, take the same logic I used, and tell me how good the Jets can get if Sanchez takes that junior year QB leap. We all see the potential in him. We maybe biased about it, but the potential is very visible if u watch him play. If he becomes a pro bowl caliber QB, he can turn the Jets D into a huge monster, the Jets WR core into an unstoppable duo, and Greene into an all-pro RB. Remeber, those WRs have had monster years already. Santonio would have had a monster year this year as well if he played all games. He had nearly 600 yards in the last 8 game prior to Buffalo with 5 TDs. That averages about 1200 yards a season with 10 TDs with a 2nd year QB. Again, I maybe biased, but I'm giving you my reasonings. Jets are on their way up for the future. Their future is better than the Pats. Extremely young offense (WRs, TEs, 3/5 OLs, HB). LT is not in their long term plans anyways. Their D is not too old either with Revis, Cro and Wilson at corners, and David Harris at MLB. These are some very young players. DL is the concern and we expect that to be answered this year. As for salary cap comparison, Jets have a much larger cap than the Patriots simply cuz Jets use most of it, while Pats don't really go close to it. In two years time, Jets will create huge salary cap spaces when Jenkins, Woody, Gholston, Bryan Thomas, Shaun Ellis, JT, and LT would be gone. Some this coming off season, some next season. Jenkins replacement is there. Woody's replacement is Ducasse. LTs replacement is Greene, if that. JT/Bryan Thomas are nothing special to replace via FA this year I hope. Same for Shaun Ellis at age 34 or something. Combine all of them and the Jets create probably close to $30 mil in cap space without losing anyone significant in two years time. $30 mil can get you from 4 great all-pro caliber players, to 6 great players. Current cap space, plust any increase in cap can be enough to the quad (David Harris, Cro, Braylon, Santonio) here especially since JT would be gone this year along with possibily Shaun Ellis.
