That is a common misconception. What the game did was legitimize the AFL teams. The Jets showed that an AFL team could defeat an NFL team. AFL-NFL merger announced- June 8, 1966 Super Bowl 3- January 12, 1969
but the superbowl did make people realize that the AFC was not a joke right? that's what my pops told me.
You're right, the merger was in 1966. The Jet's win made a name for a former AFL team. AFL teams were considered far less superior.
It essentially brought legitamacy in terms of competition with AFL teams vs. NFL teams. Its like saying a TCU beating Auburn for the national championship. I'll be rocking my replica SB ring during the game!
Well Happy Anniverary then! I bet it kills Rex to walk by that trophy every day! Wait... What is an Anniverary?
That is correct champ! Super Bowl 1 through 4 was the AFL vs the NFL. Not until Super Bowl 5 was it the AFC vs the NFC. The trophy wasn't even the Lombardi Trophy until 1970. The trophy was initially inscribed with the words “World Professional Football Championship”.
i was also led to believe that while superbowl is used now, the first game that moniker was applied to was SB3, prior to that they were labeled "championship game" (although after the fact they all became known as superbowls) can anyone of you longtime Jet fans confirm?
Good grief. If I call out the guy for having typed "AFC" instead of the correct "AFL" somebody could have written that I was being an asshole. We all knew the guy meant "AFL." Give him a break and give me one, too.
