The Jets division-changing loss to NE was a perfect storm of changing personnel and lack of focus, neither of which will be the case this Sunday night. 1) 2 PLAYERS GONE, one for the Pats and one for the Jets. No one expected the trading of Randy Moss to be a positive for the Pats, but it allowed Belichick to completely retool the offense. The Pats team the Jets defeated in September was gone, replaced by a more versatile offense designed to attack the Jets slower linebackers and not their Pro Bowl secondary. Meanwhile, the loss of Jim Leonard 3 days prior robbed the Jets of their defensive QB, and did NOT allow them adequate time to readjust their scheme. 2) JETS OVERCONFIDENT AND UNFOCUSED for the game. Even with the division title at stake, the Jets were flat for this game because of several factors: (1) They had defeated the Pats fairly easily 3 months before WITH Randy Moss. This was surely going to be even easier without Moss to account for. (2) The Jets had just beaten the Browns in Cleveland, where the Pats had been stomped the week before. (3) Rex's banter was at it's highest point in the week before the game, boasting about how the Jets were going to win the game. This was exactly the wrong message to send a group of players that were already feeling overconfident. This time around, the Pats have the Jets full attention and Rex's respect. Also, the Jets have retooled around the loss of Leonard (Smith and Pool had their best games of the year on Saturday night) and the Pats 6-threat offense (Branch & Welker, Gronkowski & Hernadez, and BJGE and Woodhead) will not be a surprise. In fact, Belichick is probably working overtime this week to convince the Pats that the Jets are a real threat. JETS 34 PATS 24
I believe losing Jim Leonhard 2 days before the Pats game....really threw the Defense into a tailspin. I don't foresee the same mistakes being made this time around. This a little more stability back in the secondary now.
3) Brian Schottenheimer had a shitty gameplan and made terrible play calls which played directly into the BB's & TB's strengths.
Just 2 things: IMO, Rex was at his least mouthy the week before the Pats game. I don't remember a whole lot of bulliten board material, if any. As I recall he said BB was the best coach in the NFL or something like that.. and was complimentary of Brady. I don't think BB or anyone else needs to work on getting the Pats to understand the importance of this game or the seriousness of the Jets. It's understood. We're divisional rivals, this will be our third meet up this season and I think each team, coach and staff have a crystal clear mindset on the implications of winning this game.
Without getting into specifics, I'll just say there's no way in hell they're 6 TD's better than we are ... or 5 or 4 or 3. Maybe not even 2. We played as badly as we could possibly play that night for plenty of reasons. If we play the type of game we're capeable of playing, I'd bet my life that this will be a close game in the 4th quarter.
He very well may have had a terrible gameplan, sadly the defense played so poorly that we never got to see what that gameplan consisted of.
I agree with the first point loosing Jim Leonard hurt our d. But we lost control of that game early with stupid play calls, horrible punting, and no pressure on Brady.
We cannot fall behind by more than 10 points in this game. Pretty sure we have not come been able to overcome a lead greater than that all season long.
45-3 shouldn't happen again if Rex has his team prepared to play football and if his players ARE prepared to play football. But if 45-3 or worse happens again, that just means the Pats* are playing like the best team in the NFL. ats_suck: (*Team got caught cheating)
How about 2 TDs thanks to short field on Steve Weatherford's WORST career day punting. As stated many times, anything and everything that could have gone wrong for the Jets did. Weatherford's been money all year and he had a career worst day.
Not Getting Behind This is important looking at how the Patriots play as well as the Jets. If the Jets try to establish the run early while the Patriots stack to stop the run, and if the Patriots score early, the Jets will have to push things playing catch up. That's when things get out of hand. It hasn't just been the Jets that have gotten behind in the first quarter then watched the game get very lopsided. There have been a lot of teams that have fond themselves down by a couple of touchdowns at the half. The Patriots defense seems slanted towards creating turnovers more and forcing punts less. Once the opponent gets behind and the QB thinks he has to start taking a few chances, things get ugly.
The Pats have been steamrolling everyone. I don't think we'll see another curb stomping, but won't be shocked if it happens again. They're coming off a bye week and will be fresh and very well prepared. We're 8.5 point dogs for a reason.
Yea I agree losing Jim Leonhard was killer. We still would have lost but the game would have been closer.
I agree. The best defense the Patriots have is their offense. They get a lead and that forces the other teams to abandon their game plans, which then lead to mistakes by those teams against that Patriots defense. Again, the Jets players have to come out and do a better job of execution this time around. Rex Ryan can talk all week, but if he doesn't have his players ready to play, 45-3 or worse could happen again.
Its amazing what rebuildding your O in the middle of the season can do. Nobody had film on them and suddenly they got much faster, and started doing what they do well, slants and screens with their smaller faster guys. I Honestly believe that's what has fuelled their dominance.
If our offense came as a surprise to you guys, it sounds like RR forgot to watch about 7 games worth of footage leading up to that week. If your players didn't have the motivation to work hard in preparation of a game where they could seize control of the division (against their biggest rival), that says something as well...
