What's that noise? It sounds like talking, but I can't be sure. Here, have a sandwich. That's better. Hehehe.
You present an excellent case, but I have to disagree with your statement that NEVER, NEVER is the case. At the end of the day, a good kicker will win or loose more games for a team than almost any other position player, except for perhaps the QB and RB. So if you truly need a kicker above all else, then get it whenever you can. The problem as you well stated is that the Jets were a far cry from needing a kicker above all else, which shows the lack of wisdom and football knowledge we had in the front office for a long long time. Say the teamwas a real superball contender with the kicker as the only weakness well that might have been a totally different story.
I agree that we could definitely win some games this year - more than any writer will admit to save a meager few - but with the level of inexperience for the projected starters and the lack of cohesion that so many new faces causes, I don't see how 8 games is within the realm of reality. Yes, that was all one sentence. I'm not ashamed to admit it.
My take on this is I'd rather be ranked low than all hyped up only to be let down......again and again and again. Just remember all the times we were "picked" to go to playoffs, and even the super bowl, then the same ole Jets curse comes crashing down. I'm actually looking forward to the changes and see a new fresh young Jets team with something to prove and nothing to lose.
Tell you what - I agree with you. And, if we're both in agreement, the real problem was how we evaluated our own talent, rather than the pick, per se. Since that regime is gone, I can live with that conclusion. Do we agree (now, at least) that Nugent was the wrong pick for the Jets?
Why would you be? You should be proud of it, in fact. It's not a run on sentence. What was this about again? Rankings. Right. I don't much care about it, truth be known. I don't expect much in the W column, but I do expect them to SHOW ME SOMETHING, which I've said tons of times. I think they will. As far as last year goes, in all honesty, Sunday has stuck by his points all along. And they're very valid ones. However, who among us was thinking Apocalypse in April?!; so I didn't hate it at the time. I don't necessarily hate it now, even though I've seen the logic all along.
:drunk: J/K Well maybe a little Had a few set backs (sometimes life grabs your attention) but I'm back now! I really missed TGG. Whew it's good to be here!
The bit of luck we need to win 8 games: 1. Chad is healthy for a change and plays at least 13 games. 2. Curtis is not done yet and wants one more big year. If both of those things happen I expect the Jets to win 7, maybe 8 games. Maybe 33% chance overall.
I think the whole thing really hinges on Chad, but having Curtis produce enough to take the workload while Houston and Washington find their identities in the backfield would do wonders. I'm just having trouble envisioning both happening simultaneously now. Too much Jets, I guess. Everything is up in the air right now I think, and it's hard to be anything more than cautiously optimistic. But I'm heartened by the offseason so far.
The offensive line is the key in my opinion. In 2004 our offensive line was beastly and that is why Martin ran for nearly 1700 yards. Especially when you take into consideration that he only had a long run of 24 yards that year. If our offensive line can open holes for Martin to use his excellent vision and for Chad to stay healthy, I think we have a pretty good team next year.
The offensive line is what it is. It's going to take time for them to play together in an effective manner, because probably only 2 starters will have played a snap together. Having strong and healthy veteran presences commanding the huddle and coming out of the backfield will help the O-line cohese and help the rookies progress. If you take Chad and/or Curtis out of this equation, I think it will take longer for the line to become productive.
My thoughts exactly... I firmly believe that we will be full of surprises this season. I pray more good then bad! But seriously...the chips are in place. I am anxious to see our young blood get out there and show us what they've got. I'm very interested in Clemens, and what he brings to the table. I hope he gets some valuable playing time. So to hell with rankings right now...It's like going to a fortuneteller!!! Whatever... If we deserve to be dead last...I'LL BELIEVE IT WHEN I SEE IT! Oh, and welcome back PF4!!! I hope everything's going OK for you now.
dumbway neglected the o-line for 4 years, to say nothing about botching trades, contracts, and tenders. one draft choice would have made little difference.
Yeah, who wants a QB who has won 60% of his starts, went 21-16 while the other starters went 8-19 with the same team, has a career 92 QB rating, has thrown 55 TDs and 30 Ints, has never thrown an interception in the red zone in his career, has won the only road playoff game for the Jets since 1982 and would have led us to the AFC Championship Game in 2004 if the FG kicker could kick (and that was WITH the injured shoulder). Yeah - what a bum. Instead let's play a never was and likely never will be (Ramsey), the human tackling dummy (Bollinger), and a completely untested and unknown rookie (Clemmens). Brilliant.
