Pettine's reputation took a bit of a hit when Rex revealed that this season he's been letting Pettine call a bunch of the plays and right around the same time the defense seemed to fall off a cliff for a while.

It might end up being a situation where Pettine will voluntarily step down (to a lower position) for the sake of the team and Rob. Or another scenario is that Rob isn't made an positional coach at all... but instead nominated the assistant head coach and just ends up being a loose extension of Rex.

I think this would be a horrible idea. But if it ever happens, I hope HBO at least has the decency to put it all on film next training camp. If ever Hard Knocks could get harder . . . .

Rex gives alot of credit to Pettine and Thurman. There was an article last year I believe, calling them a defensive trinity. Pettine and Rex are pretty much inseperable, unless Pettine takes a job as a HC somewhere.

If this did manage to happen I don't think Rex would want him to be DC off the bat. He specifically noted that Rob doesn't have experience in his system.

I've got Caribbean Cruise tickets and the fringe benefits to go with it, for the guy that gets Manning out of the game.

Next week, God willing, it's a 7 day Med Cruise for getting Buck Frady out.

I'm pretty sure Roberto Ryan will find a DC job somewhere else if the Browns let him go, if not a HC job. I'm not so sure I'd want the other Ryan on our staff as well. I think one is enough. My feeling is that he and Rex are so similar, I'd like to see someone else on the staff to bring a different perspective. Different viewpoints tend to bring out the best ideas in people.

Rex is seriously thinking about brining his brother in to mentor Gholston.

haha but here's what would happen if rex hires ryan as DC: jets implode mid season, woody fires the coach and elevates the DC to interime HC. Ryan offers Rex a position on his staff.

Rob and Rex would be able teach the defense their Twin language so that the shitbag Patriots couldn't steal their signals.

I would fully expect Rex to give a press conference as Rob and Rob to give a press conference as Rex.

I just wonder if all the end of the season nonsense (footgate) has hurt Rob's chance at becoming a head coach this offseason. Prior to the Pats game I think Rex's reputation helped Rob, now I am not too sure.

I would agree with that completely. Rex and his father are two different people, but the comparisons never stop. Buddy's brought up all the time when people talk about Rex. Same with Rob. I don't even remember how many times I've heard commentators discuss the "Ryan style" defense when talking about the Jets or the Browns, almost interchangeably. How can you not believe Rob's chance to be a HC hinges on how well Rex does regardless of his own success?

I think this is just the Daily News finding things to write articles about to fill space because they've already exhausted every other storyline about the game. I find it hard to believe no team is going to want Rob's services.

Well the Browns went what 5-11? That obviously means something about his defense unless it was the players he had to work with.

The DC is rather meaningless on this team for lack of a better term since Rex runs the show, calls the plays, etc. I can't imagine Rob coming over here just to stand around on the sidelines and look semi-professional.
