http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.asp?sport=NFL&id=2393 Going to miss his 3rd straight season... getting a second rotator cuff surgery... almost 30 years old... hmm...
Couch always got the shit end of the stick though. He had no one around him. His best receiver during his tenure was Kevin Johnson, and William Green was his best runner with a career 3.7 YPC average + no line.
Just because your team can't hit the ball, doesn't mean you have to take it out on Pennington.
Ouch, that smarts! LoL...Let's be honest though, that was a helluva game, and let's not just start a random argument because the Yankees were better last night (and always, but that's besides the point  ) The Mets are still quite possibly the best team in the league right now, and I would fear meeting them in the WS this year. Somehow, I don't think they would roll over and play dead like in 2000. (We don't have Kenny Rogers around to kick in the pants this time, LoL) As far as Penny, come on already. Why should he "take the hint" as the subject line says? Pennington was better than he should have been when healthy. Let's just say Penny had received the same attention and chance that Clemmens has now, rather than spending too long sitting behind Old Man Interception. Maybe the club would have seen what they had, and made a bigger push to fix up the line and keep it stable. Maybe they would have resigned Coles before letting him hit the FA market. Maybe with the current CS, we would have had a revolving tandem of CMart and Jordan, keeping CMart healthy longer. All of these maybes, if they turned the other way, could have made Penny one of the greatest we have ever seen in green. As was already said, Couch was surrounded by a lot of garbage for his career. Why come back to continue to take the pounding? Plus, he has three surgeries, rather than the one and a half Penny has had. Why can't we all just let the CS make the determination whether Penny can lead this team? Would it be too much to just sit and wait? Who knows? Maybe Penny is, in fact, finished. Fortunately, with Clemmens, the future is not as bleak as in years past if that is the case. On the other hand, what if Penny has two or three more good years to give us? Think about it this way. Let's, for argument's sake, say Penny has three years of functionality left in his body. Nothing fantastic, but good enough to use the talent around him effectively. For the next two seasons, he plays and we string together 6 and then 8 win seasons. All the while, Clemmens is being groomed to take the reigns. With stability like that, and an improving record under a new, young, dynamic CS, we can attract marquee FAs. Suddenly, a honest run can be made in 2008. In hindsight, we will look back at conversations like this and laugh, all because Chad helped this club move into it's new era smoothly. On the other hand, let's say Penny has nothing left in the tank. What have we lost? Does anyone think honestly we have any real shot at making a run in the coming year? Let's be serious. So for now, while the line learns to gel, we have some vets revolving to get us through. Big deal. Clemmens is still the future. I don't want to see him thrown to wolves right now, even if he is ready. We are in rebuild mode, and Clemmens is the centerpiece right now. When the dust settles, and we have an actual running game, along with a defined WR corps, and a solid OLine, then we look at the playoffs and warn the AFC to look out.
I don't know that it was a rotator cuff, but Jim Kelly did suffer a major shoulder injury in college, and then another in Buffalo, giving rise to the mystical powers of Frank Reich. From his Hall of Fame profile: And, what seems to be a lesser injury (where he only missed two games):
If our FO is smart they would put CP on IR for the year. The only two QBs that should be in contention for the starting job are Ramsey and Bollinger. Our OL is very young and inexperience. Putting Clemens or Pennington behind them would only lead them to the hospital. Let the OL gel for a year. That gives CP a year to fully recover and Clemens a year to develop and learn the system. If Ramsey or Bollinger play well this year we are in the drivers? seat. We will be the envy of the NFL with four potential starting QBs. I call that great trade bait.
PLEASE dont compare anything with us to Jim Kelly or anyone else of the bills of thet late 80's and early 90's, i would rather us go 1-15 for four straight years than lose 4 straight super bowls.
LOL Great post MISERY LOVES COMPANY.I guess posting that nonsense is better than swallowing a bullet or using a rope.Give Pennington a chance he deserves that much.
Chad should take a hint because he is done Ramsey will do a fine job this year while mangini and schottenheimer groom clemmens
