I'm still a Mount Vernon supporter. And I'll give him all of next year, too (if he's on the team). After that, even I will have had enough.
Who's a worse pick? 2nd overall Blair Thomas 9th overall Kyle Brady 4th overall Dewayne Robertson 6th overall Vernon Gholston I might have to go with Vernon only because at least these other guys started at one point.
Trading up for Dewayne cost us two players. Thomas, Brady and Ghostlon only cost us one. Kansas City delenda est.
Has anyone seen Gholston's balls lately? They must be rolling around on the ground somewhere...squish....whoops.
The Gholston situation really irks me.....if he lived up to even half of his potential....HALF!.....we wouldn't be worrying about our pass rush going into the playoffs.
Right. What would it have taken, to move up and nab Chris Long at #2? With Ropati coming back next year and Kris possibly, that's encouraging. Let's hope we can find someone in the draft.
The Front 7...whether it's a pass rushing OLB....or a defensive lineman.....has to be the top priority of the 2011 draft.
Exactly, the Jets do not have one player in the front 7 that the opposition has to double, with Jenkins out. That doesn't mean they suck but it does mean that because of this teams can say alright we will give you our #1 and #2 WR's, fuck it. You can not cover the TE, 3rd/slot wr or RB out of back field. This situation also makes it much more difficult for Rex to create mismatches like last year. I am not saying anything that isn't obvious. If a team plays the Jets straight up like the Fins, they are toast offensively. However, too many teams now have the Peyton/Brady blueprint from last year. Had Gholston worked out and been this type of player, this defense would be better than last year. Still though even then the Jets would have had at least 3 losses. That falls on Sanchez. The Jets are mirror images of his season, inconsistent. Hmmmm
With Revis and Cromartie all the Jets need is 1 guy that can create mismatches. 1 guy to game plan for. If they can find this guy they will be fine.
My expectations aren't high going into the playoffs. God knows I want the Jets to win....but I'm also realistic about the situation too. Next year's draft is going to be an important one. After talking to Mr.E and WW85....apparently the draft is stocked with DL and OLB in the first 2 rounds. Tanny needs to take full advantage of this. Especially if we lose our 3rd rounder (Cromartie trade). Time to restock the defensive cupboard
This is why I trust in Tannenbaum and Rex's eye for talent. They obviously know what's lacking in the front 7. Whatever happens in the playoffs win or lose...I know next year will be even better.
Rather than make a new Gholston thread id rather just ask here. But what would Gholston have to do this postseason to make you want him back for next season ? (assuming he renegotiates his contract for something reasonable not that 9.3 million $ crap)
My expectations are similar, but I figured going in, the Jets would a 10-6 or 11-5 team this year mostly because of Sanchez. As inconsistent, as he has been, he is still way better than last year. If the Jets can get an impact player or two in the front seven and Sanchez can improve, 2011 can and should, be pretty fun.
I completely agree. Youth in the trenches is a must need. I really hope we can get what we want, where we pick and we can hit on all our picks. I believe this front office can pull it off. I'm a new dad so I haven't had a whole lot of time to catch up on college ball this year, so if anyone can give me their list of potential DL, OLB players for the Jets to target, that would be great!
That's not really how money works. If he doesn't notch that one sack, the 9.2 million dollar bonus doesn't trigger. There isn't a greater benefit to triggering and avoiding the sack than there is to not triggering it in the first place. In fact it's the reverse, if he doesn't get the sack we don't have to cut him to avoid the bonus since we don't have to pay it in the first place, so the Jets can keep him on the cheap. On the other hand, if he triggers the bonus, odds are he's cut and signed on the open market, by the Jets or somebody else. My money's on him going home to Ohio and playing for the coach who drafted him, Eric Mangini. Which almost makes me feel like all this talk about wanting to get Gholston his first sack is a nice way of all these people saying they want him gone. Just speculation on my part, but I sort of imagine that he doesn't really want to be here, and would never resign as a free agent.
The more I watch this Jets team, the more convinced I am that what's missing in the front seven is Kris Jenkins. He brings almost everything that this unit lacks. The 2010 Jets with a healthy Kris Jenkins would've won the AFC East and had a first round bye.
Well we still need to draft for the future even with him back. I hope he can come back with those knees and still be effective. I think he can but strictly on a rotational basis with another young, fresh legged big body from the draft.
