They mentioned the passing of John Elliott today on the video boards. I guess he passed away last week at 66 years old. Link RIP John Elliott
I didn't hear this. He was a truly excellent defensive tackle from 1968-1970 for the Jets. Another pro football player dying young. RIP.
Yeah, he passed away on the 11th. Carl McAdams (a teammate of Elliott with the '68 Jets) was one of the pallbearers.
Rob Lytle died this weekend. He had just turned 56. He was a Heisman finalist at Michigan and then played seven seasons with the Broncos.
I saw that and they said he passsed away earlier last week which I thought was strange since we didn't hear anything about it.
Seems like most of you on this board are much younger than me and never had the chance to see John Elliott play. The statistics of a defensive lineman do not necessarily tell the entire story. As someone who lived through the late 60's as a teenage Jet fan I can tell all of you John Elliott was a mainstay on defense for us and a truly great player. He was one of the quickest defensive tackles in the league and was constantly pressuring the QB. Thanks for the great memories John.
I thought a pic of the man would be appropriate. Never saw him play, it was before my time. Defensive lineman wore 80 back then?
I missed this, sad to hear. He was before my time, the Jets sucked by the time I started watching them. RIP.
I remember watching him, Gerry Philbin and Verlon Biggs bringing it to the QB!!! I was like 12, so certainly formative years!
