Kris 15 - you are incorrect:

Jets at #49 chose LaMont Jordan
Dolphins at #52 chose Chris Chambers

    link: http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/years/2001

I also don't think Santana is better than Chambers. We needed a bigger WR and even though Chambers is not tall, he plays big with long arms and is more a possession guy which is what we needed at the time. Here are their stats for their careers...you decide who you like better:

    Santana Moss

    67 games 45 starts - 235 catches for 3899 yards (16.6 YPC) and 28 Touchdowns -

2 punt returns for TD's and an 11.5 yard per return average (good ave!)

    11 fumbles 3 lost

    Chris Chambers

    78 games 69 starts - 315 catches for 4596 yards (14.6 YPC) and 39 touchdowns

38 kickoff returns for a 22.5 yard average no TD's (all as a rookie)

    10 fumbles 4 lost

Overall very similar stats during a 5 year career...Chambers has played in 11 more games - so he's been healthier and that's the difference in production. He's got 9 TD's more than Moss - playing 11 more games...to me that's important.

Moss was supposed to be a game breaker, but his stats aren't much better in YPC and are not better for TD's.

Bottom line is we traded up to #16 to get Moss - passing on Hampton - and could have had Chamber #2

I say 2004 was his best draft.

Green Guy....How can you complain w/ the Moss Pick. You sound like a putz for your explanation on Moss being too small. FYI- Steve Smith has the best rec. stats last year and almost went to the Bowl!!! Oh and I believe he is the same height as SANTANA. The Jets were afraid to use him unlike WASH and now he's a probowler.

I do not disagree with you but it was PERM EDWARDS WHO HELD BACK SANTANA!

    Joe who's the PUTZ?

If you had any knowledge here, you would know that there is no WR in the HISTORY of the NFL under 5-11 who is in the Hall of Fame.

I can complain about the Moss pick all I want - since I started ranting against it BEFORE the draft in 2001. When the rumors started swirling that Dumbway and DumHerm were going with Moss, I started right away blasting the idea.

the Jets were "afraid" to use him? Please, the guy was injured for most of his first two seasons!

I said it in April of 2001 and I will say it again, you don't draft a small quick WR with the #1 pick - especially if you consider him a WR/KR!

Genius, can you name a #1 pick WR/KR who was worth it? Again, skipping on a DT was dumb and dumber!

We probably should have traded back and taken Chad Johnson and a DT later on.

Chris Chambers is not really all that much better than Moss. We're talking about a guy who has had ONE career 1,000 yard season. Since they've had him, the Dolphins have brought in guys like Derrius Thompson, David Boston, and Marty Booker to upgrade the position. He's essentially another 1A type like Moss, who flashes every now and then.

If I had to do that draft all over again I probably would have STILL taken Lamont Jordan over Chambers. That draft pick was based on the sensible reality that running backs break down at a certain age. There was really no precedent for what Curtis Martin did after that. Moreover, Bradway bent over backwards and extended Curtis, so the decision was really one we never would have been capable of making.

Chambers fell because he had cruddy hands and he was a poor route runner from a run oriented offense. He was no Lee Evans out of Wisconsin. The fact that he surprised as a pro is irrelevant, because at 5-11 with less than blazing speed he was a raw guy not worth taking a chance on early. You simply couldn't have known.

King's commentary regarding the Vick for Tomlinson/Brees Falcons/Chargers scenario is laughable. The media is still smarting because the "new kind of athlete/quarterback" still hasn't taken off. This would have been a ripoff if Brees had been Patrick Ramsey. Tomlinson is an all-time great back and Brees has been stellar. Vick is a player who keeps his team in games and still can't pass.

Tommy McDonald- 5'9" wide receiver in Hall of Fame (played from 1957-68)

I agree with you on Moss. I didn't like the pick. I figured he'd be a good punt returner and would catch about 45 passes a season. That's not good enough for a 1st round pick. I wanted the Jets to draft Chad Johnson with the 19th pick. I thought he had very good hands and was a "home run hitter".
I also thought David Terrell was going to be good.

xxjets, you are probably right - although I did love Hampton - and he's quite the run stuffing double teamed NT we could use right now, isn't he?

If they could have traded down - and still landed a Chad Johnson and a DT (Shaun Rogers) that would have been a great move.

With Dumbway and Dumherm, I'd have been happy with Hampton and Chambers.

Even if you think Chambers and Moss are equal - Chambers would have fit the mold better of what we needed - and he was a #2 pick, not the #1.
