Look at the names in the article.. He is ranking the how the 2001 draft is today. How those players worked out. Moss, McKenzie, Jordan & Reed. Read it again.  You thought it was about this years draft?????.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/peter_king/06/19/mmqb/index.html First off, here's the actual article... Second, the draft was screwed up by our first year team of Bradway and Herm - because they caved to the NY Pressure and traded their #6 pick to Pittsburgh to move up 3 spots to nab Santana Moss. I can't remember how many posts I put onto the board about Moss being too small to be a #1 receiver in the NFL - and that he might be a short term impact player, but to trade up to get him, and pass on our Dline need was criminal. By passing on a big WR and DT - Bad-Herm ended up having to trade up for Dwayne Robertson two years later. If the Jets had been smart, this would have been their draft: 1-16 - Casey Hampton - DT 2-49 - Chris Chambers - WR 3-79 - Rudi Johnson - RB 4-101 - Ryan Diem - OT 6-181 - TJ Houshmandzadeh - WR 8 - 2006 - Corey Hall - s 8-217 - Rick DeMulling - G OK, so I was pissed we didn't take Hampton back in 2001. I liked the pick of LaMont Jordan #2, but passing on a WR like Chambers to take a guy who would NEVER start for the Jets was stupid! We still haven't replaced Keyshawn. As good as McKenzie was/is - if he could never play LT why draft him? Johnson in the 3rd spot was a better pick than LaMont - but he might never have started for the Jets anyway. I don't claim to have known a thing about Diem, this is a hindsight pick for sure! Same with Houshmandzadeh, but our FO is supposed to know these things, right? Hall and DeMulling are good NFL players to be picked so low... Also available to us in rounds 1 or 2 that year: Nate Clements 1-21 Reggie Wayne 1-30 Chad Johnson 2-36 Kendrell Bell 2-39 Kris Jenkins 2-44 (who I loved!) Matt Light 2-48 Shaun Rogers 3-61 the steal of the draft! Gary Baxter 3-62
guys, as King says it takes 5 years to truly rate a draft. Rating the recent draft is mental mastrubation - opinions are always welcome, but rating?
Good Posting.... I too was dead set against MOVING UP for Moss in a draft that was supposedly loaded at WR.
Santana Moss is a better wr than Chambers. I wanted DT Shaun Rogers instead of Lamont Jordan in round 2. Kareem Mckenzie was a solid, solid pick in round 3. By far Bradway's best draft too bad the Jets have no players from that draft left on the roster.
As was I. I wanted Chambers, and would still take him, despite the taint he has taken on as a Dolphin.
Actualy Chambers was taken before our 2nd pick. So the guy we should have passed on in favor of him was Moss in the first. That's how I felt on draft day, I really liked Chambers.
All you can do as a fan is hope your management team does a great job in picking winners because the NFL draft is nearly impossible to predict long term. And it's not just with the Jets. I remember Boston Globe writer Ron Borges calling Belichick foolish for passing on David Terrell to take Richard Seymour, who Borges said was too tall and skinny to be effective in the NFL. Borges also said that Belichick threw his No. 2 away on Matt Light, commenting on Light that "he won't be helping anytime soon." No wonder Borges hates Belichick--Bill's made Borges look like a jackass who knows nothing about football on many an occasion since. Peter King beat up the Patriots for this draft but they ended up with two long term cornerstone players who played huge roles in winning three championships. How terrible is that?
