Rex said in his presser today that the Bears made him lose 40 pounds to go from 293 to 250. I'm guessing they were trying to make him a 4-3 DE, not a DT if that was the case (I don't know though). Now the Jets are beefing him back up to 3-4 DE size and his normal playing weight. Wouldn't it be great if we could steal a talented young 3-4 DE here? That would be HUGE for this team going forward.
This is funny because a lot of us wanted this guy when we traded up for Shonn Greene. Now we've got both.
wow ok i didnt know ANY of that to be honest. thats fucking retarded and would explain alot. interesting. wonder what hes at now.
If he has an impact this season, which is a low percentage right now, Tanny should get executive of the year.
I highly doubt he has an impact this season. I'd basically look at him like a rookie. He's changing back to his natural position AND changing his body. Hopefully he can show something next year.
This doesn't make any sense. If they thought so highly of him and targeted him in the draft why did they put Dixon on the 53 man roster and then risked losing out on Gilbert only claiming him for a PS spot? They put in a higher claim on Dixon over Gilbert so when they got Dixon they didn't want Gilbert on the 53 and had to wait to see if anyone else wanted him before being able to put him on the PS.
What excites me the most about the addition of Gilbert and now his ascension to the active roster is that this is a guy Rex personally worked out prior to the 09 draft......he saw something in this kid on film that he really liked. Word was that the Jets were looking at going after him in the 3rd round of the draft, but when Green fell, and they were able to trade up to the top of the round to snag him, they did. Also worth noting that Rex personally reached out to Gilbert and convinced him to come join our practice squad......(when his agent thought he was going to end up with a different team, originally).......Rex wanted this kid, and he went out and got him. The fact he's up to our active roster so quickly......is a great great sign, imo.....given the weight we need him to gain to play 3-4 DE....and he's already up (when obviously he couldn't have gained much of that weight back yet)....is a great sign that's he's been showing them something in practice. This kid absolutely has the physical skill set to be a dominant player for us going forward.....and he's got one of the best defensive minds in the game believing in him.....I really really like his chances to be an impact player for us going forward, and at the very least being a big part of our defensive rotation by next year.
The kid is talented....I won't be surprised in the least if he becomes as big a factor for this team in a year or two..
The question I have is........did the Jets drop Howard Green, and bring up Gilbert, because Gilbert looked so good in practice that they wanted him on the 53 man roster now?....(despite the fact he's probably still working on getting up to the playing weight we'll need him at)....... OR......did another team show interest in signing Gilbert, forcing the Jets hand to sign him to the 53 man roster, for fear of losing him. Question should be answered somewhat, by whether he makes the 45 man gameday roster.
I like that fact too, Shaun Ellis does what he does very well, and minus what stupid pot incident, he's also a good role model for a young player.
good points, i was wondering the same thing. another team probably offered him a spot so he used that as leverage to get on the jets 53 ... after all, nobody REALLY wants to leave rex!
Montana...... good point. I thought the same, some team could be sniffing around to sign Gilbert, Rex didn't want to lose him.
he also didn't go out and acquire Gholston.........he did however go out and personally scout Jarron Gilbert, prior to the 09 draft..........and then personally called him to talk him into signing with our practice squad.....and then the 53 man roster. ....bit of a difference.
Be excited about the fact that Gholston has a position and a role due to Rex fixing this misdrafted problem.
