The reason why he was 3rd string was because he was literally picked up by the 49ers at the end of preseason, so he doesnt know the playbook. I knew he'd be quarterback by the end of the season, hes a leader and reminds me of a poor mans Donovan McNabb. If Shaun Hill was able to win a few with thats squad, then i think so can Troy

Mike Singletary won't have a job for much longer. It really doesn't matter who he starts at quarterback anymore.

I guess Singletary expected Carr to light it up after being thrown into a close game? I know he threw a costly INT, but he hasn't started a game a long time.

Carr obviously gives them the best chance to win, but they won't win many games with Singletary running the show.

You obviously did not see Carr in action on Sunday in Carolina. Down 23-20 with less than a minute to go, Carr authored perhaps the worst drive I ever saw in such a spot. He was abominable.

I'm telling you, Smith is a better option than Carr. Carr cannot play quarterback in the National Football League.

Don't be surprised if Troy Smith is the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49er's opening day in 2011.

I'm really happy this kid is finally getting his shot.

This move reeks of desperation. Singletary is horseshit, and all the Niners fans finally realize it. They should just cash it in for this year do their best to get their coach fired and the #1 overall so they go draft Luck and possible drag Harbaugh.

OK, not really cash it in...but it's not like they're gonna win many games trying with this incompetent asshat running the show.

This just goes to show how unpredictable the NFL is year after year. All of the favorites have started out slow, and the ones who were supposedly a lock to win their division have been terrible.

I didn't think the Niners would win the Division. The one move I didn't understand this off-season (and I think I might've commented earlier in the year) was Carr for Hill? I think Hill on this Niners squad could've actually made them competitors for the Division. Since his stint in Houston, David Carr hasn't been the same. I also didn't like Alex Smith, even with his good performance to finish the season last year. At least with Hill, Singletary could've made the move sooner and won some very close games.

Apparently the niners owner has said that for Singletary to keep his job he needs to not only get into the playoffs but win at least one playoff game - so its safe to say he is good as gone.
