Can someone explain to me why any Jet fan in their right mind would be rooting against a successful Pennington comeback???? How is Pennington's failure to return good for the Jets? First of all, if Pennington can't play, the new coaching staff will not stick with him. That means that there is no risk that he will be handed the job or rushed back when he is not ready. Second, if he can come back, doesn't that make the Jets a better team? How any Jet fan can sit here in June and proclaim with glee that he is done and start in with the "noodle arm" and "duck" comments is beyond me. I don't understand why Jet fans as a whole are not pulling for this guy to return to form. Are your memories that short that you don't remember how good he was in 2002 and 2004 and what a winner he was? And to proclaim that he is done or that it is impossible for him to come back is just idiotic. Unless you are his doctor, how about zipping it until training camp ends and we see whether he is back or not. But to root against him, in my mind, is just not productive. Are Bengal fans rooting against Palmer's comeback from knee surgery? Are Steeler fans rooting against Rothlesberger for his complete off the field stupidity? Why should Pennington be treated differently? Baffling.
Probably because this is the Jets. For too long now we have watched our team just squeak through seasons, and it has made a lot of people bitter. Here's a better question: How can so many people be against Penny coming back full strength and at the same time hang on to Vinny's jockstrap? While I am still not convinced he can do it, I overwhelmingly want him to. Like you JWWS, I haven't forgotten the things he has done on the field. If he can play to his potential, the Jets are far better with him than without him.
I can't imagine any Jets fan is rooting for Penny to fail.. Its just hard to be optimistic regarding his full recovery and if the expectations are low than you don't get let down..I'm definetly rooting for him but I don't expect anything from him..
I'd guess they're hedging their bets. If he does well, they're happy. If he sucks they can say "Told you so."
Yeah, I agree with the field in general. It's not that we're rooting against him as much as most Jet fans don't think he's gonna come back like he used to. I'd personally love to see the "classic" Chad Pennington return. A betting man would have his money on another quaterback for this year though.
Because I don't believe he's good enough to win it all. I'm not rooting against the guy per se, but I'm not on his jock like most of the posters here.
it seems to me that chad is coming along fine and that if he works within the confines of the medical stffs regimen, he should do fine, ramsey im not impressed with cuse of his bad decision making, but I am encouraged at the overall depth at QB in kellon, and brooks, They say kellon has quite a field and huddle presence
What a winner he was? Exactly what did he win? Certainly not any SB's nor any AFC Championship games. Not even an semi final for that matter. He's lost every big game he's ever played in. He lost in Oakland. He lost in Pittsburgh. He hasn't been the same QB he was in 2002 so spare me the fond albeit fictional memories of big games won. Hell, we BARELY beat San Diego and although a win is a win, he lost the next week in Pittsburgh so a loss is a loss as well. He got exposed back in 2002 and to this day, he's mediocre at best against the better teams. That could be a function of bad coaching although the Hermies would disagree with that. Can Chad Pennington take this team to the next level? I don't think so. He's damn good a running Hackett's offense mundane as it was. Since the QB position has been a bit of a black hole for such a long time, anyone that can complete a pass, no matter how routine, suddenly becomes some sort of savior. The issue here isn't whether Chad comes back, its if Chad STAYS back and plays one entire season off the IR. Even if he accomplishes that, in the long run exactly how much better off are the Jets with a QB every DC in the league knows how to defend against? Sorry but I'll pass on the Chad flavored KoolAid.
People are cynical. If you put yourself on the line and bet on Pennington, you might be wrong. If you say hes done and laugh about it and act like you dont care, then when he doesnt come back they can say I told you so. And if he does come back, they can jump on the bandwagon and nobody will remember their past cynicism.
I think this here sums up why someone would root against Chad. I'd rather him not comeback at all for us then comeback and only play a handful of games before injury. The last thing this franchise needs is a setback at the QB position. Ramsey(and Kellen based on what I read) are opposites of Penny as far as tools go. I don't want a 3-4 week adjustment period midseason to accomodate Penny being done for the year(again). My mindset is that Penny is not the QB of the future for this franchise so let's take a step back and be done with it - instead of taking one forward and then two back.
This post is filled with typical Jet fan misconceptions. First - Pennington has NOT lost every big game in which he played. Every game in 2002 was big, and he won them all down the stretch - excpet Chicago and who knows if Chrebet hangs onto that ball. I guess beating New England on the road and Green Bay the last game don't count as big games. And the Indy playoff win must have been a dream. As for Oakland, the entire team stunk up the stadium that day, from the OL, which couldn't protect Pennington at all, to the receivers, including Coles - who gave up on numerous passses, two of which led to interceptions - to the defense which let Garner run all over them. How about the 8 games he won in 2004 and the first road playoff win since 1982? They don't count??? Second, as for this myth that the league has Pennington figured out or that he can't beat the good teams, well it is a bunch of BS. You sound like Champ. Every QB that doesn't win the SB can't beat good teams and is figured out then. After Oakland beat the Jets in the playoffs, Gannon had the worst game in SB history against TB - 6 picks. Did the league figure him out, or was it just that TB was in his face all day. How about Peyton Manning? Is he "figured out?" He can't win a big game and has really laid some eggs in the playoffs against the Pats. And what about last year's playoff game against Pittsburg? Is it that he is figured out or is that no QB can succeed when constantly pressured? I think that statements like "he can't beat good teams" and "the league has him figured out" are ridiculous, with all due respect. Football is a team game and a QB takes you only so far without a defense or an offensive line. Pennington has had more success than any Jet QB since Namath. Testaverde hasn't had the same success and has stunk with the same team that Pennington has won with. What big games did Testaverde win? Go back to 98 if you want, but he could not win a playoff game on the road while Pennington has, no matter how close that game was. Testaverde stunk in 00 against Detroit and Baltimore when the Jets needed one win to make the playoffs. He stunk in 01 when the Jets won ugly and in spite of him. I guess Marino was a bum also - no rings on his hand and plenty of postseason losses. Was he figured out? I could go on and on. Sure, you can question Pennington's durability and we will see about that. But to say that he is not a winner and can't win the big game is belied by the success he had in 02 and 04, despite the playoff losses. I'll take a QB who wins 60% of the time and is 2-2 in the playoffs over what we have had since 1968. If Pennington is healthy, I'll also take that over Ramsey, who has done nothing in his career bu disappoint, Bollinger, who is clearly nothing more than a back up, and the unknown that is Clemens.
And your post is typical of a Jet Fan who's drunk on the Green Koolaid! When are you gonna stop being so willing to settle? Lets see... Coulda, Woulda, Shudda.. Fact is, Chrebet didn't hang on to that ball. It shouldn't have come down to that play in the first place. If Chad was this "Savior" you think he is, That Bears game should have been won on his leadership skills alone. He was raw back then so, give him the perverbial mulligan. Ummm, notice the highlights. SuperBowl. The idea for other franchises is to make the SB and win. Yours seem to be making the first round. You want BS? there it is. Every QB that makes the SB will always have that on their resume win or lose. So what if Gannon had the "worst game in SB history". At least he's A PART OF SB HISTORY. He may have got there and lost, but at least he got there. We won't even mention the difference in their respective careers as far as longevity goes. Can we NOT mention Marino and Pennington in the same thread? Passing records and longevity alone excludes Pennington from that conversation. Man, things are worse than I thought out in JetLand. Talk about grasping at straws. He won in the regular season. He gets the credit in that. He lost in the Oakland game. He gets the credit for that too. He lucked out in SD. He lost in Pittsburgh although I'm not the only one that thought Edwards handcuffed him. I just don't think Chad will take this team any further than he has so far. Even if, and its a HUGE IF, he plays 16 games. Yeah, we'll see alright. When he comes back, will he be able to throw passes other than 5 yd outs? Deep balls that don't flutter and float in the breeze? You know DC's will take away the midrange stuff right? They're gonna make Chad throw the deeper passes and they're gonna blitz him and hit him. So unfortunately, Chad won't have Jet Fans designing the defenses he'll be playing against.
No matter if we are pulling for him or not will not determine if he makes it or not. Certainly any NYJ fan that knows anything about FB should be concerned with his weak arm which is the reason for the noodle arm & wounded duck comments. With his perceive arm weakness around the league as a known entity he in fact turns into a liaability then a asset if he can not throw the long ball with authority cause otherwise the other side will just gang up on the line & our O will be as pitiful as it was last year.
i hate darksiders and pessimism in general but were talking about a rotator cuff from a avg armed passer torn twice. (dont get technical calling it something else, he was injured twice, no sugar coating) we all want him to come back as the efficient passer we remember, but people need to remember this is football, not a popularity contest. penny is a field general and a great guy, but its hard to go to battle injured. if penny could even play 16 games this season and win half of em he should get comeback player of the year.
How any Jet fan can root against him is baffling to me just b/c of what he has done for us and the fact that he is nothing but a class act. I will always root for Chad, I know what he put on the line for this team and whether it works out here(I hope so) or somewhere else I'll always root for Chad to succeed.
