I think it's been a little overshadowed, but I think the ST unit deserves a ton of props for last nights performance. Especially considering how badly they got burned last year in Miami. If it were up to me, I'd be giving the game ball to Brad Smith. WR Brad Smith recorded the Jets longest kickoff return this season when he returned a kick 54 yards in the second quarter. P Steve Weatherford pinned the Dolphins at the 5-yard line on a third quarter punt, his second punt inside the 20-yard line in the game and seventh in the season’s first three games. S Eric Smith blocked a P Brandon Fields punt late in the third quarter, the second blocked punt of his career. Smith’s first block came last season when he blocked a Chris Hanson punt that was returned by B. Smith for a touchdown against NE on 11/22/09. K Nick Folk followed the E. Smith blocked punt with a 30-yard field goal, his six of the season. With his 60-yard field goal attempt blocked right before the end of the first-half, Folk is now six-of-seven on the season.
Westoff loves killing the dolphins. 2 fake punts last year in miami and then we got burned for 2 KOR's for td's so yea he was gameplanning
Whether those fake punts were planned is questionable. But the special teams did look great last night - props to Brad Smith and Westy.
The Jets special teams are almost routinely great. They've had like 2 or 3 bad games in the years Westhoff has run the unit. He's about the best unit coach in the NFL right now, maybe only second to Dick LeBeau in Pittsburgh.
Folk and weatherford are our most consistent players so far this year. They've both been phenomenal. I was actually confident folk was gonna hit the 50 something yarder before the retarded penalty. I knew no way the 60 + was going in though Brad smith definitely came up huge yesterday. Both on kickoff returns and wildcat runs. btw, bullshit no call on a facemask when he got hit out of bounds. refs were pretty bad last night....thankfully it wasn't enough to effect the final outcome. although it easily could have
We're in a hole next year. With Coach Westhoff retiring, whoever replaces him will have to fill some huge shoes.
I've noticed that he doesn't always reach the endzone, but his kickoffs tend to have decent hangtime.
Is it just me, or has Steve Weatherford become the most improved STer on our team? I think Steve is booting punts for 55+ yard consistently when he has room to work with and put it inside the 20 when punting near the midfield. I thought this was going to be our weakest link on the special teams, but I now think Weatherford may be our best Special teamer. Nick Folk has been huge and has proven everyone wrong so far. He wasn't going to make that 61 yarder last night, but I wanted to see how close he'd come. Not surprised it was blocked but glad it didn't result in a Dolphins TD as is the case with a lot of blocked FGs.
I don't like that Leonard and Wilson keep rotating as PR. Let one of them win the possition and get into more of a groove back there, my choice would be Leonard. He already has a few nice returns. Let Wilson focuss on improving his coverage this year.
