not really an article, just a snipit. you would have thought the jets would do the same http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Ravens-preparing-for-penaltyprone-Walt-Anderson-crew.html OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens have a thorough scouting report on the officiating crew assigned to Monday night's game against the New York Jets. Referee Walt Anderson's crew worked last year's Ravens game at the Green Bay Packers, assessing 23 penalties for the second-most yards in NFL history with 310 yards primarily accumulated on a combined nine pass interference infractions. "That crew calls a lot of penalties, there’s no doubt about it," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "That’s kind of one of their things. They call it the way they see it. They call it very tight. I think that’s going to be a big advantage for us. We've played the preseason very tight, and I'm looking for that to be a big advantage for us." Penalties, especially pass interference, was a major issue for Baltimore last season. The Ravens ranked first in penalty yards last season.
The Ref Crew From Last Night I didn't see this written about much in the NY papers, but the Baltimore press wrote a bit about the ref crew from last night. In ends up they have a reputation for calling games "tight"....they threw the most flags in the NFL last season. From: http://www.hometownannapolis.com/ne...-a-win-silence-the-Jets-in-season-opener.html Perhaps the Jets, especially Cromartie, had ignored the scouting report on referee Walt Anderson's crew. Anderson and his crew threw more flags than anyone else in the NFL last season, assessing 205 penalties for 1,794 yards. That was six more penalties for 172 more yards than any other group of officials. From before the game: http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Ravens-preparing-for-penaltyprone-Walt-Anderson-crew.html Referee Walt Anderson's crew worked last year's Ravens game at the Green Bay Packers, assessing 23 penalties for the second-most yards in NFL history with 310 yards primarily accumulated on a combined nine pass interference infractions. "That crew calls a lot of penalties, there’s no doubt about it," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "That’s kind of one of their things. They call it the way they see it. They call it very tight. I think that’s going to be a big advantage for us. We've played the preseason very tight, and I'm looking for that to be a big advantage for us."
Did the Jets do ANY scouting at all? The Ravens had a good game plan. The Jets didn't have a game plan at all.
According to Cimini "the Jets coaches warned the players that this particular officiating crew, led by Walt Anderson, was known for throwing a lot of flags."
Ding Ding Ding... Coaching staff should take the lead on owning the blame for this entire debacle of a first game! Rex is the head coach, and while the D played extremely well, he is in charge of the ENTIRE team, including the offense, and as of yet we haven't heard anything to this effect accept we gotta get better and I believe we will... that's not an answer... that's a cop out... I love Rex as much as anybody on the board, but he's gotta put his foot down, and get this ship righted ASAP, otherwise this is gonna be a long year
Am I the only one that sees something wrong with this? If you have to scout refs that to me says that the refs can have more control over the outcome of the game than the players do. The call should be the no matter who calls it. On that note can someone tell me the difference between the flag thrown on wilson in the end zone and the play when the Mexican tried to hit Jerricho on the sideline. Both dbs made contact. Both turned for the ball. Both put there hands up to get the ball, but one guy got flagged. WTF!
What the fuck are you talking about. No game plan. Yea they decided to be the first team in history to not go into a game with a game plan. Give me a break. This ranks right up there with some other idiotic posts to date.
it's shitty that the refs need to be scouted. there's a fucking rulebook and the league needs standards. most of the calls were ok, to be fair, but there were a couple shitty ones, like the one on braylon and a couple of the pass interference calls were very soft. jets offense was offensive. but the 'd' was great and the jets could have stolen one.
I saw this last night and it pissed me off, most of the calls were legit but teams shouldn't have to scout the officials. Is Donaghy reffing in the NFL now? If this crew has a rep for being ticky tack then the NFL should be stepping in and setting the law down. They take away all the judgment calls from these jackasses yet allow one crew to influence the outcome of games. I now know when Walt Anderson is assigned to game to bet the under.
That's just sad. While you shouldn't make dumb penalties (like forgetting to look back at the ball), a team shouldn't have to game plan for a fucking referee.
Baseball teams scout umpires all the time. Along with the opposing starting pitcher's scouting report, coaches will pass around a scouting report on that nights umpires to the players. They even include the ump's hobbies and interests, so players can chit chat between pitches and butter them up a little lol
"Am I the only one that sees something wrong with this? If you have to scout refs that to me says that the refs can have more control over the outcome of the game than the players do." It's called keeping the bookies happy. And by the way, Pass Interference should only be a maximum of 15 yards. When you give refs the power to dish out 40 yard penalties, it only ends up hurting the game play on the field. 310 yards in penalties??? This crew definitely has something up there collective asses.
There isn't a pro league that doesn't scout refs. I don't understand why anyone would think that it's a bad thing. Refs are human and are not created equally.
I have no problems calling a tight game as long as it is called tight for both sides...am I the only one that thinks we should have got the flag when Sanchez threw the 40/45 yarder to Cotchery??? Their guy was on him like a bad cold - the endzone play with Wilson was less of a call than this one should have been.
