I think that rather than retiring it, it should be given to an underdog on the team everytime its used.

The Cowboys, Texans, Ravens, Panthers, Jaguars and Raiders have not retired any uniform numbers. The Redskins, Buccaneers, Chargers, Bills, Bengals and Steelers have each only retired one uniform number.

I think he meant more to the organization than anyone else over the last 11 years-and for that and all he has sacrificed, he should have his numbe retired

    1. The Jets should absolutely positively retire his number this year in a ceremony. He is not necessarily our greatest player, but he represents all that is good in football, overcame incredible odds and is the epitome of class. If anyone other than Namath could be considered the face of the Jets it is Wayne. I will miss him.

    2. He should be hired immediately as an assistant WR coach, with his first project being to teach Brad Smith how to run routes. I think that this would be a great match and could keep Wayne in the Jet fold, and also develop a potential pro bowl talent.

In the retail world, the customer is always right.
In the sports world, the fan is always right.
They should put the Green Lantern emblem up at the very least.

He is another player that should go up on a ring of fame but no way does his number get retired before several others.

I think that they should retire his number. Wayne was the heart and soul of the Jets for a long time and was a major part of two teams that won the AFC East. Unfortunately, that is basically as far as those teams went, but that has to count for something considering the Jets past. He is a Jets legend whether they retire his number or not. Just go to a game and you will see more 80's than any other jersey and its been that way for close to ten years.

Not really, there have been other popular players BETTER than Chrebet who don't and should not have their # retired. No team should retire a # based on popularity, Wayne was never a great player, rarely the best WR on his team and wasn't a part of a Championship team. There is absolutely no sane reason to retire his #.

    Retire Chrebet's #80

I respect the opinions of all the various Jet fans who have contributed to this thread. In my humble opinion they should indeed retire his number. Chrebet was not our greatest player, but he is one of our greatest stories and one of the most popular to wear the uniform over the years. Wayne is New York Jets football. Chrebet's #80 should be retired.

    I found this website too.

We don't retire numbers in Aussie rules football (it may be rested for a year or 2) however the number of a legendary player who has just retired is often given to a promising rookie.

It is hoped that he will carry that number with pride and purpose and that he will be inspired to never let it down.

Curtis's #28 will be retired no doubt he has done more for this organization than any other other player in the past 20 years.. Martin will enter the Hall as a Jet thusly his number needs to be retired!!

On wayne i agree with those who want his # 80 never to be worn again. He has done so much for the Jets as a player, and in terms of Revenue So many came out in the mid 1990's (before Parcells) to see the Green Lantern Shine on Sundays he made it to the Pro's with an unbelievable story, this is no other one like it in the history of Football and on top of it.. Like Curtis he will never be considered the best at his position in team history much less in NFL history but he did amass the Numeric totals that IMO depict a jersey being retired, #2 in Receptions, #3 Yards and #8 in Touchdowns Chrebet has done it all and If anyone needs to look and find a story of how the little guy made his way on up look no further than Wayne Chrebet the most determined guy to ever put on a Jets Jersey

    RETIRE # 80!!

    Theoretically, 99, I suppose.

Then they could unretire numbers like the Seahawks did.
